He lost his wife then his daughter

You can even talk him down if you pass the checks and skip the first half of his finale boss fight

I don’t understand people seeking to like and forgive him.
He was obsessed with his daughter, hated when she was happy without him, had no issue abducting her and using the love of her life to keep himself immortal. Father of the ***ing Century award, no less.
Not to mention, hey, she was fine with dying, she was NOT fine being brought back forcefully, she was a Selunite through and through and he knew that, and was like, Whatever.
Gods didn’t take anyone from him, his wife died from long term illness, and while we don’t know how his daughter died, I’m positive Selune did not kill her.

    • @statementofjoespooky1660
      @statementofjoespooky1660 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +25

It’s not that most people are wanting to forgive or even like him. It’s that this whole storyline of his makes him feel far more like a real person. A real person with flaws and obsessions that were made more intense by grief, and that eventually led to him destroying himself and his loved ones. It’s often the mark of a great fictional villain- to write them in a way that makes the reader/player empathize with them, while still hating what they became.
The point is really that what happened to him could easily break anyone- losing his wife, who he loved more than anything, and then later losing his daughter (and dog) on the same night, effectively meaning he lost absolutely everything.
Also, he fell victim to Shar’s doctrine. She made him feel understood, and wanted, and he became more and more devoted to her as his grief grew and grew. Then when he decided to try and get back his daughter at all costs, Myrkul offered him a way to do it, in exchange for carrying out his bidding. At that point, Ketheric had become so twisted by his grief and darkness that he believed everything he had done and was going to do was justified as long as he got his daughter back. Obviously he was wrong, but it’s a compelling backstory to show how he came to be what he is in the current game. He also blamed Selune for letting his wife and daughter die, which, of course, isn’t exactly fair. The gods in BG3 tend to only be directly interested in mortals if they are actively useful to them. (Shar used Ketheric to build an army, Myrkul used him to try and overtake the world.) In Ketheric’s eyes, Selune abandoned him and his family despite all their faithful service to her. He lost his faith, and it destroyed him. So when he says the gods broke him first, that’s what he means. To him, each god he served saw him as a tool to be discarded in the end. You see that happen firsthand when Myrkul lets him die by the player’s hand. He is forsaken.
None of that excuses what he did, but it does make it much easier to be invested in his character. Whether you hate him or empathize with him is up to you, and I imagine it varies based on the player’s personal experiences. Personally, I have had an intense crisis of faith and struggled with grief and depression in my past, and it’s not hard for me to understand the pain Ketheric felt. If you spend your entire life dedicated to a deity and then suddenly realize you are of no consequence to them, it can completely break you. For me, I had to become an entirely new person, and my world view changed. For Ketheric, he instead gave in to the grief and became lonely and bitter.
It’s a great opportunity for roleplay in the game. For example, my two paladin characters both used persuasion to try and get him to stand down, using their knowledge of his past to convince him he wasn’t beyond saving. On the other hand, my Dark Urge character was so angry at Ketheric for his actions in their past that they didn’t even give themself a chance to try and understand him, they just killed him as soon as possible. And my bard character was disgusted by what he had done to the land and the people in it, that they didn’t offer him mercy because they didn’t believe he deserved it. His background and character gives lots of room for the player to react.
TLDR: Ketheric is a compelling villain because his backstory is fairly easy to connect with and it makes his actions all the more interesting, giving the player lots of room for roleplay even if they despise him.

Act 3 feels so bad simply because act 2 is so amazing:
Ketheric is still a bastard, but you kinda get why. Everyone he loved seemed destined to die, or leave him. His daughter had falled for a divine being, his wife was dead, and his legacy was withering away.
You find endless diaries and letters which all but tell you his entire life detail by detail.

And then went down when I faced another power-hungry politician and some crazy murder bitch. Even their “gods” did not care much for them. Bane and Bhaal threw them away once they were of no use. But Myrkul, he seemed to actually be distraught by his chosen’s defeat and ACTUALLY did something about it. See? even the game knows they were worthless. Bane was just bullshiting about how he is unstoppable and something like that and just abandoned his chosen to the next idiot that came to ask., while bhaal cried bloody tears like a baby.

Dark Urge is the best way to play this game. Not for its messed up ways in killing innocent people or the like, etc. But because it’s really a story about redemption and having friends along with you to help you recover and get through whatever trials and tribulations lay ahead for the Durge character. The redemption run is the best and opens soooo much more dialogue and interactions with NPCs and team members. You get to know a more personal side of your team’s characters and realize that you are all on this redemptive path as well. (Should you choose)
Gale reminds me much of myself when I was a drug addict for many years in the past. The things he says, his shame and guilt, are very much alike what a recovering addict would say. Thank God for friends, good friends. Isolation is only torture even when you think it’s not. It’s really an escape from pain, but it only leads to more pain in the end. We need friends to help us get back up and be there to emotionally support and empower each other. Isobel mentions Ketheric began to isolate himself in his grief. And she was surprised that when people lose everything that matters to them(and everyone that matters) and their goddess not only allowed, but her daughter also played a part in this suffering, they tend to become vengeful.

Aylin and Isobel had a very negatively stereotypical same-sex female relationship. There's definitely a sense of an abusive power figure dominating a submissive abuse victim dynamic.

But... It broke my oath. Which is fair, I killed people without giving them a chance to fight.
I don't know if it broke my oath cuz they are innocents according to the game mechanics or if it's cuz I said I'd free them (in my head, a paladin saying that they would "free" a vampire doesn't necessarily mean they'd release them).
I accepted it nonetheless, my game experience was elevated! It was my first and only oathbreaking in that playthrough and it was meaningful, relevant!

In his pain, he found himself used by Shar, coerced into abandoning his faith in Selune, and in his allegiance to Shar, he truly lost everything. Selune's moonlight reminded him of everything he lost and he turned his back to the Moonmaiden.
Shar offered easing of his pain for his service, but even the mother of loss and absence could not wash away his pain. He could not forget his beloved ones.
So it was Myrkul, who offered the daughter who died if he became his chosen. He wanted nothing more than his family back, but would become a monster for them. Losing everything he once was, that even when he got his daughter back. It was she who turned her back on him.
