    Van Mildert in my experience was a very high percentage of students who didn't go to private school and liked to work hard and play hard. So "normal". Same with Aidans!

    • @csbirb1165
      @csbirb1165 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for giving at least an idea of the 'stereotype' for Aidans as I find it frustrating that no one seems to even have an opinion about it! It's worse than having a negative opinion.

      Aidan's is at the top of the hill, so the steps are a good regular exercise! In my time it had the LOUDEST college balls in the entire uni, but it's very work-focused (work-hard, play-hard). Aidan's and Cuths used to be the two societies and Cuths referred to Aidan's as it's 'fallen sister' because it went collegiate and mixed. It's one of the older ones (it's moved. It used to be in The Bailey until the bespoke college was built at the top of Windmill Hill). It has some of THE best views over the city, is within a quick walk of the main Library and is perfect for science studies as its close to that area but not IN it. I did philosophy so I'd picked the college furthest from my department but I enjoyed the stroll into town (whether via the main roads or, when the weather was good, down via Prebends Bridge, along the Bailey, through town and across Elvet Bridge) The college library has great views across the city when you're struggling to think of an answer and need something to look at, IT is well served and because there's a high sports interest there's a good gym. I spent many a night with students from all years arguing over some concept and ended up watching the sun come up over the cathedral and castle and I never tired of that view. Gave me some perspective. It's terrible at advertising itself but I can recommend it whole-heartedly based on my experience. Students were great, atmosphere conducive to the work-hard/play-hard ethos and I did two degrees based out of there and still feel a great loyalty to it. Worth checking out, especially if you want all the advantages of college but also somewhere you can retire to that's away from the crowds.

    I'm currently choosing what to firm between Durham and York (for Psychology). Leaning towards Durham, have been allocated Collingwood which is great, but am nervous due to there being no footage or anything of the Durham psych department itself (York has better marketing by a mile). Do you/any of your friends know whether the Psychology department is actually nice/has good facilities/nice lecture rooms etc? Didn't even get to see it on the open day :/ Great video, I also watched your Collingwood room tour one!

    • @Slidetotheleft
      @Slidetotheleft  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      So actually lectures often aren't in the main psychology building as their rooms are not big enough capacity wise. They are usually on the main science site where the lecture halls are fairly new and great! As someone who only does half of the psych course this means I haven't had any contact hours in the main building but I have had tutorials in the new Psychology/Sociology building across the road with is very funky haha. All in all you definitely get all the facilities you need, even if they aren't directing in the same building all the time. Having said that they are all in about a five minute walk of each other so its pretty chill.
