friends, I was sick for a *very* long time and recovery has been so slow! We're finally getting the gears of the channel moving again starting with this simple little vid, and more content is coming this week. I wish there had not been such a long gap between videos but there was just no avoiding it. Thank you so much for your patience 💖
I don’t even wear lipstick, but just wanted to say the quality, depth and professionalism of your reviews/videos is outstanding. Love watching your videos!
I think it’s so cool that you’ve (or Joe has) taken the time to color match the font of name of the lipstick to the shade of the lipstick. That’s just an amazing delicious extra step. I often am just listening, but it’s so cool to see the extra steps when I have the time to have my eyeballs on the screen.
L'Avenue has been my favorite lipstick this year, with 1990 as a very close second. I read about L'Avenue being a close dupe to Clinique's Black Honey which I adored before swapping over to cruelty free makeup. It's wonderful to have the shade in my rotation again (and in a superior formula imo). I'm also pale olive so seeing how the shades buffed out with your undertones was immensly helpful. This was the exact information I needed to try out Tiger and Cabo. It also helped me to decide to pass on Slip. I already have 1990 and Baby, so Slip would have always played second fiddle to those two. While I wish there would have been lip swatches shown here as well, your descriptions and swatches are magnificent as always. Thank you so much for the helpful review, I'll definely use your link to purchase, and I hope that you feel better soon!
You keep featuring beautiful brands not available in Europe, this video helped me understand the colors better. I will look for dupes in my collection and in formulas available to me. Thank you!
It's probably not exactly the same, but I have Lisa Eldridge's Meet Me In Berlin, and I think I get strong Merit 1990 vibes from it. (I'm also not in N America so can't do a comparison.)
I was thinking about these lipsticks on and off, debating whether I should make a purchase. This couldn't have come at a better time. Thank you so much Hannah!
Did anyone else perked up at hearing "I've been testing a lot of eyeshadow lately"? No, just me? 😂 As always, I love how thorough you are in these kinds of videos. Even if I'm not interested in the product itself or can't get it in my country, I enjoy the experience.
This video helped me figure out that besides tiger, I already have lipstick for the other colors I’m attracted to. I’m trying to not buy dupes of things that I already have and love. This was very helpfull.
I just emailed them asking if there were plans afoot for shipping across the Atlantic! Such beautiful things, possibly made more desirable by my lack of access to them.
How did I not see this video release?! Last week I was googling for merit lip color comparisons and couldn’t find much, lo and behold my favorite beauty creator had made exactly what I wanted??!!
Love this video!! Im a small makeup influencer on TikTok and Merit reached out and sent me some of their lipsticks and Ive been in love ever since!! Ive been craving owning the whole line ever since but this video helped me to really see what shades will suit my tastes more instead of impulse buying everything
This is so helpful I’ve realized that many of the shades I’ve liked from this range are very similar to ones I already own, which makes me want to wear them more :)
Funny you mention that slip can go orange, because my merit order just arrived a couple days ago, and I was so surprised when I tried on slip how cool toned it looked on me (light warm skin, East Asian heritage). I was *hoping* I’d get more of that orangey brown, since all my fave lip colors are orangey/peachy, but it goes to show that undertone makes a big difference!
@@beepboop1391 I did also buy the merit lip oil in au natural and I *love* that color. that *does* have the peachy orange tone that I was hoping would be more prevalent in slip and the formula is lovely and moisturizing (but of course not as long wearing as a lipstick)
Merit is coming for me. Tiger is the brick red, sort of dried blood color of my dreams, and those browns and nudes are divine. They do nuanced colors so well. I love a slightly sheer, balmy formula that really lasts as opposed to a full pigmented lipstick, so I may have to check these out. I really appreciate TH-camrs who know their collection and understand color well enough to make such helpful videos like this. Thank you!
Hannah, I have been thinking of purchasing a Merit lipstick for awhile now but was so overwhelmed by the color choices. I am so thankful for this video! It gave me the confidence to finally make a purchase. Thanks to this amazing and in depth review (complete with the great comps!) I bought "Baby"! Your comparison to the two Lisa Eldridge lipsticks, which I own is one of the things that really really helped me. So so many thanks!
Omg this is so helpful! I was struggling not buy every FREAKING shade (which would have been an idiot decision). My initial assessment that 1990 would look best on me has been solidified. Thank you Hannah!
Thank you so much for this video! I've been wearing Baby and Millennial basically non-stop this summer (both of which look similarly rosy on me, with Baby being sliiiightly more neutral) because it's such an incredible formula and so easy to wear, and this was very helpful- especially seeing comparisons between the brownish shades. Those have been the trickiest for me to "read" in static swatches with respect to their undertones, and seeing them sheered out next to each other is exactly what I needed. I'm definitely going to be picking up 1990 and L'Avenue for fall!
This was an exceptional video, very informative and helpful. I see one or two of these lipsticks in my future. Also, if Merit is reading this, how about a mini set of all 8 for the holidays?!!
This is the most helpful lipstick review/swatch presentation I've ever seen---so incredibly helpful for people like me who count on reviews to make purchasing decisions!
Hi Hannah - so glad that you’re on the mend! Can you describe the similarities between Merit 1990 and Gucci A Royal Scandal? I thought they’d be close based on online swatches and I was surprised that it wasn’t your comparison
This was beautiful. Tiger and 1990 are such nostalgic lipstick colours for me, my mother used to wear lipstick in very similar shades to them when I was younger on a day to day basis. Reminded me of those, playing with your mums makeup moments as a kid and that very strong makeup smell. ❤️Thank you for this video
Thank-you. I have been 'sleeping' on Merit, still. Now, having watched your video, I'm feeling much more encouraged regarding discerning which of Merit's shades may work best (or better?) on me. I'm very, very cool-toned in my complexion, with grey-blue eyes, as well as with a nostalgic fondness for 90s makeup. At 51, I've gone through trying many, many different phases and brands!.
I have Tiger, Baby, and Cabo. I thought Tiger and Cabo would be my faves but I actually have been wearing Baby the most. It leans quite pink on me but it’s a soft rosey pink with a neutral undertone. Very beautiful. I think I will eventually pick up 1990. Love the neutral brown tone of that one. Tiger pulls slightly orange on me and if I had known it would I would have gotten 1990 instead.
Wow I'm amazed you have them all now! I recently picked up Tiger after waiting ages for sephora to restock it. It's the perfect red "nude" I've been searching for 🥰
Super helpful! I wish I would have seen this before placing an order. The comparisons are super helpful, like I wanted more, but I realized they won't work for me for reasons they could work for others. For example, I didn't get Velvet Dragon because I have Velvet Morning and it looks straight up orange on me. I am so warm these colors that look so beautiful on other people look crayola orange on me. Another example, Kitten Mischief is so close to my lips but lighter, it's a "your lips but worse" on me.
This is a bit long-winded but I think these kinds of videos are incredibly valuable to both the consumer and the company who produces them. I wish I could explain this to those companies... I have been dying to get Merit lipstick ever since Hannah and Amanda Z started raving about them but i wasn't sure what shades to get, now I am. I'll have to remember to come back and order thru here when its time to buy but this is exactly the kind of video I look for when trying to decide on any new makeup purchase... and that's actually how I found every beauty-tuber that I watch because sometimes the quality of the video and the character of the creator hook me too. I think it's a great approach for building a channel's audience as well as selling the products. I can't go in store anymore and the photos of the products on the website almost never even come close to representing the true color of the product. I always look for videos that give examples of every shade because comparing them is an important part of understanding what the color really looks like and whether I would really prefer a shade that I wouldn't have otherwise considered. They are definitely valuable videos imo. If I were a makeup company, I would send the full spectrum of shades of a new product to whichever youtubers were making thorough, top quality videos like this because its such valuable advertising. Even if I'm not someone's follower, I'm just interested in a product and want to learn more... I never order new products without searching TH-cam for demos... and not stylized, oversaturated, who knows how they tweeked it ads... real people in regular light trying them out. I know I'm not the only one. So that "advertising" will reach more than just this channel's regular audience. And it won't only make an impact for the duration of the ad campaign either. Sometimes I check out products that have been out for years and the TH-cam videos are still there for me to reference. Plus, if the consumer is introduced to the product through a youtuber they already follow, you have the added benefit of the built in trust the youtuber has cultivated with their audience, which goes A LONG WAY towards sealing the deal on a sale. If one of these artists who I understand and appreciate says they love a product and it's the kind of thing I would use, I automatically want it... or if i cant make up my mind between 2 products, i will choose the one they prefer, because i know the value of their opinion. Almost every time I watch a beauty product demo by my favorite beauty-tubers, I go straight to sephora and add it to my likes and probably cart. Then it's just a matter of how much I can afford. Almost everything I purchase for hair, skin and makeup was first recommended by a youtuber I trust. Sure seems like worthwhile marketing to me.
Please don’t apologize for taking time to recover. I really enjoyed this video. I own Baby, Slip and Tiger. I adore this formula. I find it nicely moisturizing. But, it doesn’t smudge or feel heavy. A big plus for me is it doesn’t have a strong smell or have a taste. Your swatches are wonderful.❤️
These are my favorite lipsticks. The colors and the feel on the lips are incomparable for me. I own four already (Slip, Babay, L'Avenue, and 1990), but you've convinced me to get Tiger and Cabo.
I feel there are a lot of great Revlon comparables - especially some of those 90's favorites, Rum Raisin, Toast of NY, Wine with Everything. I adore your color analysis content, really fantastic and useful information ‐ thanks!
Glad you're feeling better. Thanks for helping me understand why I love these Merit lipsticks so much. I started out with Baby, and recently picked up L'Avenue. I wear them both ALL the time. They're exactly what I'm looking for in a comfortable, all day wear lipstick. They're not drying, they're not too heavy, they're not too pigmented, and the limited color range is perfection. Right now, I'm living my my Merit lipsticks, and the Luxuriously Lucent lipsticks from Lisa Eldridge. They're similar, but you're right: Lisa's are a bit more slippy and not as long wearing as Merit's formula. I love them both!
This was incredibly helpful! The comparison swatches especially helped me decide about purchasing, since I had a number of the comp lipsticks. It was easy to see texture differences too, and that detail, plus undertone comparison helped me makes some decisions as I had been trying to decide between several of the merit shades. ❤️
Hannah, the professionalism shown by this vid is exceptional. You have guided me, as my 20s were the 90's, to explore the ysl lipstick and go on a Merrit hunt! The pharmacy brands were my work colours! And my husband has a photo of the Rouge website and quad on his phone. With thanks again Tassie Joy
I was debating Slip because 1990 is a little too “cool”/“cold” looking on me, but based on this I think it’ll be great, thank you! Also your tip about rubbing them into the lips is so good, I think it will really help me get more use out of these :D
Velvet Fawn next to Baby is the most informative tidbit! Thank you!! Everything pulls orange on me and I had been truly tempted to buy Velvet Fawn. I will be looking into Baby when it restocks.
Aaaahhh these are all so beautiful!! Tiger and 1990 look like they would be my perfect red and nude. I only own one lipstick rn so as soon as I get some disposable income I might invest in one of these, they're so tempting lol
I've had slip for a while and have been adding and unadding Tiger and 1990 to my cart for several weeks now so this is perfect! So glad you were able to acquire the entire line! Question, if you have the Gucci satin lipstick in tacey hazel, how do you feel it compares to 1990? I feel like 1990 looks like a less saturated version of it. Side note: I recently lost the aforementioned Gucci lipstick and had to buy another one because it's my GOAT lippie, but I feel like they changed the formula and packaging. Compared to the other Gucci satin lippie I own, the tube feels less sturdy and much more plastic like and the color is slightly different from what I remember it being.
I took the plunge and now I am obsessed with Merit. These are the best lipsticks I have ever tried and I have worn everything. I hope they add more colors yet the ones they have are unique and stunning. Tiger is my favorite but they all look good . Amazing product. I love my Charlotte Tilbury too but they are not as clean. Thanks for the video . If any one is on the fence about these I say go for it. The package, formula and colors are amazing and only $26 which is reasonable for the quality
Usually I don’t get much additional info from buffed out swatches, but this time it was actually very helpful! I love how Tiger looks when it’s sheer 🐅
Literally almost purchased Tiger this weekend but never hit “purchase” and now I know it’s bc the universe was telling me to wait to be able to use ur affiliate link!
The video I needed!!! What’s extra interesting is that I’ve been taking your foundation color recommendations for years, and they always work out as superb matches! And yet, seeing how bright and orange Slip looked on you and how grey and chocolatey it looks on me, we defiantly have variations of undertones! It’s amazing how people using the same foundations can have such different coloring. Have you ever done you seasonal color analysis? I feel like you must be an Autumn of some sort, with your preferences for more muted chroma, warmer, and darker or more contrasting colors. I’d love to see a break down just focused on your color preferences (clothing and makeup) and what you think the reasonings might be.
This is (I believe) the first video of yours I've watched, and I found it so thorough and helpful! Thank you. My two favorite shades were Baby and Millennial, but I feel I already have similar colors in my collection. Since this Merit formula is receiving reviews, I took down the names of those 2 shades for when it's time to replace one of my tried-and-true midtones.
I bought Cabo and 1990 shortly after they first launched. It took me a while to warm up to the formula because of that in-between quality. Now I’ve almost panned Cabo and am halfway through 1990! I’ve been considering picking up another shade or two now that I’m in love with the formula, and this was so helpful for my decision on which to try. Thank you!
I wasn’t as excited about millennial as I was about baby but now that I’ve worn both I really like millennial! Baby is almost too much like my natural lip color. I’m sure it’s all about undertones but I’m still a newbie on figuring all that out
I got both millenial and baby too as birthday present! At first millenial looks "too vanilla" for my taste looks totally boring pink. But on my fair asian skin it looks suuuuuuuper pretty 😍😍
Hannah I just picked up Cabo and tiger after buying slip sight unseen. I think that I need to give slip to a friend as it pulls warm on me and doesn't flatter me. Can I just say your thoroughness and that way you did this video is excellent. I love the grid of revolving lip swatches and your understanding of colour and formula this was so comprehensive. I cannot wait to hear what you think of Cabo because you and I both love our orange-y reds!
Great video. Those colours look sumptuous. You also made me look up what "putting the butter on the spinach" means as I'd never heard that before, and now I've learned something so thanks!
These lipsticks are beautiful and I'm so drawn to them based on the immense praise they've received, but unfortunately they are significantly orange/warm toned which I can't wear with my cool skin tone. I'm glad the colors work so perfectly for you, though! I might check out Baby, as it looks like it may contain enough neutrality/coolness for me to wear it.
I bought 1990 after hearing about it on this channel. It's my first foray into brown and I love it. It is quite neutral on me unless I really build it up. I frequently use it as a blush. While it doesn't fully set, it doesn't stay tacky on the cheek ad wears very comfortably. (I'm pale olive, brown eyes, medium brown + green hair.)
I purchased Tiger and somehow it turned pink on me which seems crazy when I look at your swatches (though many shades turn pink on me). I love how it looks swatched and wanted to love it on my lips as it seems like my perfect shade. So though I can't trust what I see online, I love your reviews. You are an inspiring human being 😊
Coming here in case the powers that be read your comments, but I wanted to say that I was impatient and went to my local Sephora to buy one of these lipsticks (in Baby, my new love) instead of using your link, but it was 100% because of this video. Thank you so much for the good work you do
I have baby and love this lipstick. I’ve been wanting to buy another one but kept going back and forth on which shade. This video has been so helpful. Thank you!
Won’t be buying now as want to finish up some similar colors in my makeup bag but will definitely be picking up 1990 and baby or millennial when I restock because that formula looks amazing - thanks Hannah!
Fashion is my current go to, and I enjoy it so much! This video is helpful, because it confirms that I should get another one when the time is right. It really is my best choice, and I am pretty sure the other shades will not work nearly as well for me.
My gosh this was a great video to watch😍 The most informative, in depth video review i have ever seen. You make me want to go out and by all merit products ❤ Excellent review darling!!!!!
Oh wow, I already knew I would probably pick one of these up but this really did help me hone down on which would work for me. I love how precise you are about color, it hits me in my color loving heart
Best swatch video ever! I'm new to your channel and wish I'd found you sooner. I appreciate your ethos so much. I'd love to hear a deep dive into how the formulas/wear of Lisa Eldridge's (velvet matte) lipsticks compare to Merit's. They're pricey and I'm torn. I'm also a fair olive so your swatch videos are priceless for me. Keep up the great work!
I’m not really into beauty content but really love this video. I do like the brand merit and may purchase one of their lipsticks in the future but I’m on a no buy! 😊 I do love your channel and watch all your videos anyway. I especially love your fashion videos because they are so unique and outside of the main stream so keep those coming!❤
I'm not buying a single lip product (except SPF lip balm if I finish the two I have) any time this year, but I've got my eye on the merit lipsticks if and when I finish/declutter my em Cosmetics lipsticks, which are coming up on two years open in January.
Absolutely love this type of video! I am not a lip product person so I try not to watch too much and be tempted by something I know I won't use. But these look like they might actually hit the mark for me.
Would love a video dedicated to brown makeup! Especially brown lip products. Am always looking for good neutral browns. I keep getting duds. Either corpse grey or brick red 😅
I love your swatch videos. They're so informative but also very relaxing. L'avenue is on my wishlist but will wait for the Sephora sale! I have all of Lisa's lipsticks so it's always hard for me to add to my collection because I already feel overwhelmed.
I really hope Merit start shipping to or find a stockist in Europe/UK soon, because the formula and shades are gorgeous, and a few times now when you’ve mentioned them I’ve looked them up only to be sad they dare to available here. Thank you for such a detailed review. I would have loved to see them all on you, not sure if it’s something you’d consider for a reel/short? 💜
Your deep dive reviews are so good, thanks for your work on them! I bought slip a few weeks ago after eyeing it and researching it for so long, and I'm so glad I did! It's perfect for me in every way, thanks for helping us make smart consumer choices.
What perfect timing with these just coming back into stock at Sephora. Ordered slip and tiger, can’t wait to try them out. Thanks so much, very enjoyable and informative.
Wonderful video!! I own Slip and I am obsessed. The one downside I found is that my bullet recently detached from the tube, so it's all wobbly now 😔 but I'm not sure how common that is with this formula.
Thank you so much for such an informative video. I finally purchased the shade Tiger today and I’ve had my eye on it for months. I’ve been on the search for a nude red for years I’m really hoping this is it!
I love these beautiful swatches and analysis! I don't need a new lipstick right now, but it's still lovely to see these really aesthetic, up-close videos. Thank you for all the work you've done on this one

Welcome back, darling! I've been worried for you.
Glad you took the time you needed to recover, and happy that you are feeling better! :)
You still sound sick in this video. I hope that you are feeling better. 💕

Maybe somewhere between Tiger and 1990?
@@alicemlovegrove thank you for the suggestion. We should open a support group 🤣. I would love to try Salt New York 🥺
I was thinking about these lipsticks on and off, debating whether I should make a purchase. This couldn't have come at a better time. Thank you so much Hannah!
I LOVE this formula. It's so slippy on the lips. It glides on like you wouldn't even believe and they're incredibly lightweight!
Those are so good I haven't bought any others since I have tried those.
A year later, this video continues to be a pubic service. My mom and sister in law are both getting Baby for Christmas thanks to you!! ❤❤

I heard it! And I’m not so secretly hoping that Clionadh sent over their expansion for a review!🤞
I just got the shade 1990 and I'm absolutely in love with the color and formula!

I already had L'Avenue and LOVE it! I ordered 2 more shades after watching this because I know I'll get such good use out of them!
Thrilled you made this!!! Been looking for good swatches of the pinks! I just reordered slip because I was nervous. Will get baby now as well!
Hannah, so sorry you were sick. Thank you for this lovely video. So helpful and so informative.
This was incredibly helpful! The comparison swatches especially helped me decide about purchasing, since I had a number of the comp lipsticks. It was easy to see texture differences too, and that detail, plus undertone comparison helped me makes some decisions as I had been trying to decide between several of the merit shades. ❤️
I live for your deep dives. They help me to ever do carefully curate my own collection. Really really appreciate your content 💛
I wish this video had lip swatches! I feel like it would’ve been very helpful
Putting the merit lipsticks on my wish list. You have put me over edge on these. I’m on a makeup no buy this year.
Beautiful review!
You’re very insightful, creative, and provide a ton of value to viewers. I enjoyed this review thoroughly.
Really great review. You explained how they blot out and stay on the lip. Thank you
Usually I don’t get much additional info from buffed out swatches, but this time it was actually very helpful!
Another great, in-depth video from HLP! Hope you are feeling better and taking it easy when you need to.
I hope you like Baby! I’m cool toned with light complexion and it’s a very close match to my natural lip color
Have you tried 1990? That one is very neutral IMO and I have cooler skintone too 😎
I have bought baby hoping in a neutral red but on me it leans almost brown (it's still pretty) and very cool. I'd recommend it
I really appreciate the depth of your analysis and comparison of these lipsticks! Very helpful!
Thank you so much for the good work you do
Glad you are starting to feel better! I do plan to get 1990 at some point. I don't own a lipstick right now, and I do want a straight brown.
Excellent review. Thank you. L’avenue and 1990 are my jam.
Fashion is my current go to, and I enjoy it so much! This video is helpful, because it confirms that I should get another one when the time is right. It really is my best choice, and I am pretty sure the other shades will not work nearly as well for me.
i’ve missed you!!! BEAUTIFUL swatches - i’m so tempted! hope i can find them in my country xxxx
Hope you’re feeling 100% very soon. Thanks for the great video. I love my Merit lipsticks.
Your deep dive reviews are so good, thanks for your work on them! I bought slip a few weeks ago after eyeing it and researching it for so long, and I'm so glad I did! It's perfect for me in every way, thanks for helping us make smart consumer choices.
Get well soon! Really missed you. Was hoping you and Joe were on vacation! Loved this video!!!! ♥️
Thank you for the thorough review! I really wanted L’avenue but needed a good review. Baby and 1990 are now also coming home 😂
I am CHOMPING AT THE BIT for a new makeup hot takes ✨
What perfect timing with these just coming back into stock at Sephora. Ordered slip and tiger, can’t wait to try them out. Thanks so much, very enjoyable and informative.
Best review on Utube Hannah!! Definitely going to pick a few of these up!
I’ve been waiting for this to decide which colors to try myself
Thank you for always doing SUCH thorough reviews!! Really helps us make informed and well thought purchases.
Wonderful video!! I own Slip and I am obsessed. The one downside I found is that my bullet recently detached from the tube, so it's all wobbly now 😔 but I'm not sure how common that is with this formula.
“Putting the butter on the spinach” is my new go-to metaphor for fabulous things. Thank you ❤
Love the way you do these kind of informational reviews. 🥰
This video was so beautiful, and I hope you heal fully, Hannah!
Thank you so much for such an informative video. I finally purchased the shade Tiger today and I’ve had my eye on it for months. I’ve been on the search for a nude red for years I’m really hoping this is it!
Ordered two shades based on your video. Thanks.❤
I love these beautiful swatches and analysis! I don't need a new lipstick right now, but it's still lovely to see these really aesthetic, up-close videos. Thank you for all the work you've done on this one
