  • This video was one of the funniest mornings I have ever spent filming, such a laugh and with great company. I was having so much fun that occasionally
    I actually forgot why we were there. A big thank you to the velomobile skeptic and Neil for helping out on a freezing morning. Brace yourself for some slalom fun and games with the Alpha 7, Quattrovelo, and the Milan sl. Also, hang on until the end of the vlog as there is some really nice footage of the three velos riding up to Blackheath.

      They are I did test ride in a test ride in a QV, and it only took the one test ride to know that I was going to purchase one. I will be receiving mine very soon.

    Fun video and very informative. Think you should have done a second run in the QV after you had learnt the course. Still, lots of fun 🤩 👍

    Fun John! Must admit I expected the QV to win too, but when I saw the cones I immediately thought "that's a disadvantage for the QV and the Milan" -> There's a few inches of material outside of the track, so you cannot make as nice of a line. Thanks for testing!
    PS: Can you put up links to the music again like in the first vids? Almost always on point!

    Sports car racers (gymkhana, autocross) know that lighter cars change direction the fastest. The challenge is redirecting mass against its inertia. This is why Colin Chapman "added lightness" instead of focusing on increased horsepower. A Lotus Elise has relatively narrow front tires (175s) despite being designed for great road handling, because it doesn't need massive tires to help the extremely light front end change directions.
    Also, body roll, from excessive suspension travel, causes a vehicle to slalom poorly as each successive shift in direction makes the pendulum swing into deeper compression until there is no longer has time for the suspension to respond. If you wanted to race your velomobile, you'd block the suspension and dump any unnecessary weight, which is the spirit of the Alpha 7 with its fly weight and simpler suspension design. If you repeated this on a wide road and spread the cones out much further, you'd probably test the anti tipping/stability of the velos more, as well as their paint depth and cost to ship back to the Netherlands for rebuilding.

    Might have been fun, but nobody should base a lot on these results. Different tires is not always a problem but on a wet slalom tires are very important.
    The time taking seemed very unprecise.
    The got more practice from one run to the other.
    Such a narrow slalom is not an analog for real world turning, as a wider velomobile has a huge disadvantage. The Milan already has to take a bit of a wider line with the added width in the front, the Quattrovelo with the wide back has it way worse. That makes bot only for more distance traveled, but way sharper turns, countering the Quattrovelo's turning stability. Also the rapid succession of tight turns rocks the weight from side to side, so the heavier models and softer suspension would be more disadvantaged than in real world traveling.
    So we see that the Alpha7 is more nimble, which is an important advantage, but I would still say the Quattrovelo is better at cornering (and the Milan is for long straights, so no surprise here. 😉)

    Haha, two doctors and one sir (Stuart) making funny science :)
    I'd really like to see a hill climb and downhill rolling comparison with these velos, and even better, if you had a chance to take After 7 along.

    Hi John great vid, wonder if you can answer me this, if I can complete a 10mile tt on conventional diamond bike in 22 minutes would it be possible to ride at at 40MPH and hold that speed on a flat road in the Milano ? Cheers for any feed back also would make a great future video.

    • @PsyKeks
      @PsyKeks 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don't do events, that are begging for expensive accidents! 🙈 With bikes it's okay, but velomobiles tope over and scratch up the paint and carbon! 😭

    Interesting and fun video with suprizing results. Does the A7 have lower center of gravity?

    • @velo-ads4206
      @velo-ads4206  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Seems taller than the QV, but it seems to be getting up to speed faster, maybe if the run up was a lot longer the Qv may of faired better plus the Alpha is so much lighter that it changes direction rapidly.

    • @hoekie3652
      @hoekie3652 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it has more to do with the wider back of the QV (also width back and front). More distance between the cones would have favoured the QV. Scientific: When distance would have been measured it would have shown that the distance travelled with the QV was the longest.

    • @PsyKeks
      @PsyKeks 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jeah, the Quattrovelo would have to take a wider line with sharper turning. But weight might be a factor, too. Also it was the first ine they tried. I would have wanted a retest at the end, when they had more practice.

    So, the fourth wheel, at ~20% weight punishment, adds rollover resistance that is within velonauts' skill variance. Huge relief for velo developers who've staked on a three-wheeler design.
    The argument for the danger of the only driving rear wheel skidding on a painted (rumble) strip generating yaw at high speed stays, though.

    • @PsyKeks
      @PsyKeks 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In such a tight slalom the Quattrovelo has a big disadvantage from being so wide in the rear. You have to take a line that has much harder turns and is longer. On the road where you have meters of space, this would not be an issue and the fourwheeler has the advantage when taking the same line.

    Hello John, practically all velomobiles (quest, milan, rotovelo, etc.) have a rather narrow base, which is bad for fast turns. What is the reason for this? Are there any regulations or restrictions prohibiting the use of velomobiles with a wider base on the roads?

    • @jcvjcvjcvjcv
      @jcvjcvjcvjcv 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a tradeoff between width, turning radius and closed wheelwells.

    • @PsyKeks
      @PsyKeks 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wider is less aerodynamic and harder to maneuver on narrow cycle paths and between obstacles like bollards. (Was a big disadvantage in this test for the Quattrovelo's back and a bit for the Milan.)

  • @Heavywall70
    @Heavywall70 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s fair then although extra RR plays a role. Weight and nimbleness favours the A7.

    Interesting video John. Do you think that less rolling resistance counted for the difference, and maybe wheel base?

    Sorry John... don't have your email. Just been reading about Dutch LEF. Not a bad price either and I recon you could tinker with it to make it faster and it has a windscreen wiper. How cool is that.

    In such speeds, isn't weight more important than stability? People at Velomobiel.nl have done quite some testing on race tracks with the QV prototype before they went into production with it and it was faster. But those were much higher speeds where the stability is way more important than here. This is a bit unfair video in my eyes...
