Learn how to wrap dreads at night in this Howcast hair video about dreadlocks.
Okay, so I'm going to show you how to wrap your dreads at night. I'm going to use a basic, standard scarf, head scarf rather, that you can get at any beauty supply or any department store. So the first thing you do is usually kind of square shaped. You take it in a rectangle or triangle rather, shape. Put the two ends together to get a shape something like this. The two ends are the ends you're going to tie your knot and get your most tension.
You want to first put the scarf on to of your head and kind of measure out how much length you're going to need in the back to kind of cover your dreads whether they're down or up. So since I'm fully covering my dreads, I'm going to take both of the two ends, put them together and tie it. I'm going to tie it loosely at first and make sure I get my hairline covered. I like to start with covering the ears and then as it gets tighter you can lift it over your ears.
So you want to tie it as tight as you can stand it, but tight enough where it stays in place. With the ends, you can either bring them around and tie your knot up front or you can tie a nice little knot in the back. It has to be a knot you can actually sleep on, so you don't want to get too fancy with your knotting. And then I usually just tuck the knot underneath. Make sure it's secure. Like I say, you can pull your ears out if you don't like the ears to be covered.
And another thing you can do if you like to toss and turn a lot in your sleep, you can go over the top of your scarf with a headband. That way that secures the scarf. You have your nice silk and satin up against your actual hair, because you want to use a scarf that is either silk or satin. That's better for the hair. It keeps the oils in your hair. It won't cause your hair to dry out as much. So even with using a headband, you want to be sure to have the scarf up against your actual hairline. And that is how you wrap your dreads at night.

Very helpful video for those of us who have recently started our dread loc journey and have no clue how to cover our locs properly at night.

I do a fold ontop of my head like a bun but just folded with a large rubber band or scrunchy to hold it then a bandana folded in half and tied around my forehead very widely and it holds my locs in place at the back where some hang down. Very comfortable and stays on. This was taught to me by a rasta friend with massive hair.

M B yes. Wrapping is easy. When you have long locs, the hard part is figuring out what to do with the hair and how to appropriately tie it up at night to avoid mishaping it and maintaining its integrity. So thanks for your sarcasm.

@@brooklynebony are you really serious to be so rude as to ask if the individual "really needs" that explained? You do realize at some point, something in YOUR LIFE was NEW TO YOU & raised concern or curiosity where IT too had to be explained to you, whether it pertained to locs or anything else, yes? I could ask that your mom's decision NOT TO INGEST YOU be explained to me, but that would be rude now, wouldn't it? Don't bother replying. You're blocked and muted....

EWW...I'm glad I found this channel because I toss and turn a lot at night and my hair pulls as I do it, causing me to wake up out my sleep. And I was using cotton material to tie my hair and it dry's my hair out. I'll itch and scratch all day. And my cotton pillow cases does the same. I'm going online to buy a silk scarf right now!

Mine stays on as long as I tie it tight enough. I usually like the fine line between very snug and too tight... tight, but not enough to cut iff circulation. I often tie the knot VERY tight, then pull at the scarf on either end of the knot to loosen it up just a bit to get it right.
I do use the headband option sometimes, but I use an elastic one instead of a cloth one since that holds better.
Another tip is to align the scarf right above your eyebrows so there is some leeway if it begins to slip while you sleep. If you wake up to pee at night like how I do, readjusting it then works.
Some people aren't as particular about their head scarf staying on as I am, so you can try it if you like. I've learned not to move so much in my sleep over the years cause I hate my scarf falling off (I used to be all over the bed, lol).
