    Hey guys! Today on the show we talk to the owner of this 2ZZ-swapped 1999 Toyota MR-S (MR2 Spyder) imported from Japan and built into the ultimate midship track weapon. With a sophisticated variable valve timing design, the 2ZZ was fitted in a number of sports cars over the years, including the Lotus Elise and Exige. Now it lives the rest of its days putting in work on the street and at the track. Enjoy!

      the lemmings automatically hate convertibles. I agree that a soft top will never look good. it turns a Ferrari into an ugly disposable looking thing. cloth does not look good draped over metal. That said, nobody in the US knew about the double bubble factory hardtop for this car because it was only for sale in Japan and only enthusiasts knew about and shipped them over to install. Not saying that would have saved the car, but that it basically needs it to look good.

      @@Salvisol the 2nd gen only looks good from the front at an angle, maybe also the rear. and with huge exceptions (like a TRD wing or full 2000gt kit). That front overhang is massive and ruins the shape otherwise. I just can't understand having 5 feet of front bumper drooping over the front wheels. like wtf is that, melted craft cheese? and I used to like SW20s. I owned one before the zzw30 and once someone pointed out how long the front end is i couldn't unsee it. ultimately what got me over it was mine rusted out in 14 years and I bought it immaculate from an older person. The spyder is much better at being rust resistant. that alone is worth it. the one i picked up is 5 years OLDER than my SW20 was when I first bought it and it held up way better.
      People who don't like the spyder again, first thing they see is "small". (americans automatically hate that). 2nd thing they see is bulbular headlights. not sure why this is such an issue because it's inherent in most classic 60s cars anyway but whatever. 3rd they see is horsepower. that microscopic poo shoot and bicycle thin tires. and it looks slow as hell. just like with the 2nd gen, a TRD gt300 kit fixes all of these. just put a nice fat dual exhaust through the rear bumper as well.

    I just woke up today and suddenly, I love the MR-S styling. It has grown on me alot. If only it had been 2zz from factory. This car had so many TRD extras available when it first came out, you could make such a dope looking car using parts from the factory. The hardtop and rear wing really makes it look better. Toyota's cars from this period in time were all so cool, they all had TRD options from the factory. I don't think we'll ever see something like that again. The MR-S really was the end of an era.

      @@dy2str33t-king5 Thing is, you have to consider that a Miata is essentially the same. But a Miata has a much more vibrant modding and track scene. Which one has a million variants of roll bars? Miata. Which one has affordable hardtops, Miata. Lots of parts and a more standard FR layout, Miata. I know its pretty dumb, but 1 million+ cars sold and being dubbed the best roadster of all time makes the Miata the only real choice here if you're not at all interested in being different just to be different. Heck even Miata power mods are a million to one vs the MR-S because of the much smaller engine cabin on the MR-S.
      I'm not saying I don't love this car because I do. Toyota is my favorite car brand. But at the same price as a Miata this no-trunk car is a very tough sell. Miata NA has a significant trunk and NB even hides the spare for bigger trunk. On top of that like I said no real reason why you'd choose an MR-S over MX-5. There's almost no positives in the MR-S department hence its not a choice most people make. If the MR-S had a decent trunk, it may have had a fighting chance.

I had a great CR-V until I drove one of these, and promptly sold it and found a nice Spyder very professionally repainted in a sorta dark blue/green, sorta teal metallic, that just looks great. And I like this build a lot too, great color, and I love the wheels/tire combo; I know nowadays everybody's into the huge rims and super-low-profile tires, but a properly set-up suspension works with the 'give' of the tires, or however one would describe it, and it just looks much cooler, more authentic, sorta vintage, just way better looking than it would with the huge rims and the almost-gone-roll-of-electrical-tape tires on it... Nice video. The 2ZZ has variable valve lift in addition to variable valve timing (unlike the stock 1ZZ). It is the higher lift cams that provide the extra power at high rpm (in the video, continually refers to variable valve timing, which both the the 1ZZ and 2ZZ share). The 2ZZ with the 6 speed transforms this car; much more fun to drive, and still provides great gas mileage and a similar driving experience to the stock car at lower rpm's.

Still own my 1st one from April 1995 and my track AW11 . I've got myself a Spyder project as I really want to feel if they really do handle as well as they say it does. It's stripped out the moment, hopefully can get into it once I've finished mucking around with my street AW11 upgrade. the MR2 spyder has a really long wheelbase in a SHORT car. You kinda mislabeled it in this video. It's a lot longer than an SW20 which is why it does not snap oversteer. it's very stable. The only reason the car appears shorter is because there's no trunk anymore. they chopped off all that rear overhang and added it to the middle between the wheel (which is what your cargo space behind the seat became)

    How’s come you say the gen 2 is a better drag car if it’s heavier n I believe more prone to wheelies since it’s more prone to over steer I imagine the engine is farther back n the main reason for that? I think the mr-s is better for drag and track, but idk would love to hear your reasoning for that?

    • @twrcrew8852
      @twrcrew8852 ปีที่แล้ว

      SW20 actually has more weight between the front and rear axles, so it's on very equal footing to the MRS if we're just talking about distribution. In regards to rigidity, it's also slightly ahead, being that it's not a convertible which makes up for the fact that it's also an older design which would typically be floppier than a modern equivalent (going convertible for the 3rd gen cancelled out any advancement in chassis technology, which wasn't a huge leap forward between 1989 and 1999). Ultimately where the MR2 Turbo falls flat is that it's overal geometry is inferior to the ZZW30. The front AND rear overhang is much longer and the wheelbase is almost a whole foot shorter despite the overall car being both wider AND longer. this is horrible for handling and weight shift in motion.
      Despite this, the SW20 as it sits VS the MRS as it sits makes the MRS the inferior drag car. Why?? Because the MRS cannot fit tires wider than 205s without an extensive widebody kit or riding really ghetto (both of which you can't afford on a track or drag car). The package as a chassis is far too small for any significant advantage to be realized at the same scale an SW20 does. (the SW20 for all intents and purposes WAS punching above it's weight against A tier Japanese performance cars, just at the hilt of the 300ZX, NSX, GTR, EVO, RX7 etc while the MRS was a thin paper origami aimed at the Miata, barely a notch above Kei cars from a production point of view). The engine and transmissions (2zz or 1zz) aren't strong enough to handle 400+ whp is another reason. The weight penalty of the SW20 is overcompensated by the 3SGTE and E153 being SO much stronger. Iron block. closed deck. boost from factory. E153 trans being another hefty and thick strong transmission designed to handle the boost with beefy axles to boot. If the 1zz and 2zz are plastic water heaters from walmart, the 3SGTE is an iron kettle.
      Now all that said, IF you have the money to force the MRS to fit 275s-305 tires with lots of grip, and swap to something other than a ZZ motor that can match or exceed the 3SGTE and E153 in performance, then you will have a faster car.
