I have a rooster and love the flat deck and rocker for paddling. I'm in OBX, NC and when good here it's dredging barrels. rooster gets in early and holds well on steep walls. I agree with previous comment that the board can be a bit tough to break free from its track, but I've learned to really get my foot back to utilize the break in rocker where concave exits to get this board loose. May try the hustler/heckler for summer wind chop. Thanks Chris, and good luck with the new Firewire partnership!
Great recap! I've been riding a Hustler for about a year in a lot of different conditions, the one I have is 5'10" which is a touch longer than I usually ride and a tiny bit more volume. I surf mostly in the NYC/North Jersey area so we'll rarely have crazy epic conditions to test it out in (and I would usually pick another board). Brought that sucker out in some fun choppy conditions, big or small, and it flew, I was very surprised at how much I liked it in the smaller stuff. However this year when Joaquin came up the coast, this was the only board I had for a pre-work session. I had a solid 2 hours of bliss with some great shallow barrels and this thing held up pretty well, could have used a touch more tail rocker, but still fast enough to make sections. The only sad part was on one of my last waves I snapped the tail.... sad times, however I'll definitely look at this Heckler model as a smaller wave replacement! Also in the smaller conditions I was using the FCS Amt thruster set (twin fin with a little center one) and it was perfect for the board, not sure if that had to do with the venturi bottom or not!
Great one Chris, wish all you shred-ones a very happy new year and hope for big swells to come soon! I don't actually rode any venturi bottomed shapes (yet! After this vid i want to!!) but i do have a very fun retro style board wich recreats a venturi tail! I'ts like if you take the outside corners of a squash tail and extended (wich gives you a bit more hold in tight turns) and the center part of the tail it's a little bit longer too with a slight curvature (wich tries to help a bit in fast straight lines in order to gain more speed)! It works really well, from knee high up to head high, i ussually set it up as a quad!
I have a 6'2"x20.5x2.75 venturi bottom shaped by one of my local shapers. it's a very fun board and really likes longer waves and rail turns. it feels a little weird though when doing quick snappy turns. you gotta push on it really hard and then it just releases and snaps around really abruptly. it's kinda hard to predict sometimes. I'm 5'11" and 212# the board has a performance shortboard outline with a pulled in nose and pulled in thumb tail. it's got a nice moderate continues rocker with a bit of flip in the tail.
Having both the Rooster and Hustler, both are geared toward the intermediate/advanced surfer as you mentioned and are a bit more of an aggressive outline. I've had my best cutbacks in my life on the Hustler. It's super fast but still remains controlled. The rooster hasn't seen much action only because the hustler fits the waves better in the places I surf (Orange County).
you know the difference between the rooster and the t dwart?PD: does the rooster is too straight and rigid in the tail? does it cut good? also can go vertical?
Rooster is more high performance and used for bigger days with its wave holding in the face capability. It also does have more rocker which isn't for small days. T-Dwart might be a good gap between small/punchy and medium size days.
My first ever custom board in 1990 had a set of bonzer concaves pretty much exactly what these guys call a Venturi concave. It was very rad. Very fast it na little hard to turn but I was a grom.
Thanks for providing the background info on surfboard design features, busting a few myths ;). Currently I'm using the Firewire EVO, it has a venturi like deep channel but that is much narrower. Would be nice to compare to the Rusty Heckler since it's doing great in soft waves as well.
Ventura concave seems fine for getting speed when board is flat and going straight, but surfboards are rarely going flat and straight. Remember we are riding waves, the side of a water mountain, we ride the rails 90% or the time.
Tried the Rooster at a demo day - even though you say it's more of a step up, I had a great time on it in a clean but grovelly day - very quick off the mark and kept speed despite the conditions. Not like my old venturis back in the 70's and 80's
I"ve been surfing a Hustler and I really like it a lot, I can't say whether the ventri effect actually works, but the board does do well in small waves!
Hey Chris love the vids seen about all of them, do you know anything about the Rusty Sweet Tooth I live in southern California, and I'm a pretty good surfer I just wanted to know your thoughts on the board thanks.
thinking about getting a smoothie. have you done a review of one yet? by the by, I'd love to see some vid of you surfing some of the boards you review. come on, give the people what they want. hoot hoot!!!!
you know the difference between the rooster and the tdwart? does the rooster is too straight and rigid in the tail? does it cut good? also can go vertical?
I have 3 roosters and a dwart all EPS with Venturi. The Rooster goes rail 2 rail better so I find myself surfing the Rooster more so than the Dwart even on weak waves. The Rooster is a fast board and loves to go down the line. I surf the east coast so speed is everything. In good waves it also works very well. I surfed the Rooster in Central America and enjoyed the performance over my Rusty Sweet-Tooth. Considering a Rusty Arc Angel with Venturi my buddy has one and loves it! I hope this helps

I think you missed the critical part of the venturi effect. At the area where the flow is fastest, the pressure is the lowest. This would probably make the board stick to the water more at that point. The same effect is used in a carburator to suck up fuel.
The venture kind of looks like an more pronounced version of the less defined bottoms Bob Olson of "Ole" surfboards on Maui was making back in the mid 80's. Interesting and informative review.
Big fan of shred show. I have a rooster myself and find the board to be very quick but I feel it does tend to want to go straight so it sticks sometimes when I bottom turn. I found the board to be really sensitive to fins. For me, the AM1s are the only template to work (155lbs). F4s felt too funky. Overall thoughts are excellent with generating speed and best in punchy surf. Just seems to be lacking fluidity during transitions.
Great review.....this board is super fast in and out of the pocket...as you sad Chris the bottom venturi curve bites as you pivot....not so good in hollow tubes...like supers jbay...to much width etc
The venturi effect at the closest point in the walls will drop the pressure... that in itself will promote solid rail work. It should be pretty darn easy to redirect yourself on that fish. That's a hot fish, Rusty always seems to be at the head of the pack when it comes to innovation. I still recall the C5 hitting the market and now most every board now comes with 5 boxes.
3 years of shred show!!! wooohooo!
been surfing a 5'8 hustler for about 2 years, best board ever! from soft reef breaks to hollow sandy beach breaks, works great everywhere!

Love this review! Playful and informative. Congrats on 3 years strong!
This board looks so sick, i want to see a sort of wind tunnel experiment and see just how much fluid is accelerated through the channel

Thank you that was good. I've just finished shaping my 4th board with channels in it. Goes like a rocket. Form south Africa
this board looks awesome. happy new year!!!

Time for a JS review? Thank you for the review! Happy New Year!
Would it be possible for you to check out the core vac surfboards. I can't find any in depth reviews about construction like your show provides.
Please do a retro fish design review
Firewire Pyzalien? Saw one in a surf shop and it looked really interesting. Nothing crazy, but it seemed cool. Happy New Year!!
+thomas_25 I have one! Can't review like Chris though ;)
+thomas_25 yes please!
hi I was curious if you could do a video on the sharp eye holy toledo, seems like a good board but was curious about your opinion on it.
Just bought one and I am a rookie and I love it. #rustylife #bucketlist
Looks awesome! Definitely would be a nice alternative to a traditional fish. Bet it would tear it up at the cliffs.
Happy 2016 Shredshow
Hey Chris love the vids seen about all of them, do you know anything about the Rusty Sweet Tooth I live in southern California, and I'm a pretty good surfer I just wanted to know your thoughts on the board thanks.
i surf a biscuit it has a concave but it is really shallow that board looks really fun to ride

PLEASE DO A REVIEW ON THE *7S Slipstream CV* I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IT.
+Shred Show
What would you compare the entry rocker to? Similar to a Procter monsta?

im from costa rica, so which board can you recomend me?
Seems like bonzers have similar concaves right? Pretty cool stuff!
Can you please do the CI Peregrine?
Thanks!
Can you do the CI sampler, or the CI peregrine?
yeah! Neat, as usual. Good job, Shred Show
Can you review the superbrand unit
Hey Chris I just bought this board in 5'6" but with a new technique called epoly , you mind going over that in a video
Please review the Firewire Greedy Beaver next!

keen to see a review on RUSTY SMOOTHIE if you have time! thanks!
WOULD U RECCOMEND ORDERING THE HECKER SMALLER THAN THE HUSTLER ? I HAVE A HUSTLER 6'5
The venture kind of looks like an more pronounced version of the less defined bottoms Bob Olson of "Ole" surfboards on Maui was making back in the mid 80's. Interesting and informative review.
I had a hustler..it was pretty fast, great for mushy waves
how do you get all of the boards for the episodes
Can You do Eye Symmetry Sandman
how does this compare to the ci weirdo ripper?

@aerwsrf thanks for contributing. Appreciate your feedback on board + fins.
you should do the neptunes daughter from beau youngs signature series
Do a DHD joy ride
No venturi board, no win trac pad :(
Stoked
So Nice
Do a JS black box 2
+JOSH LUIGI *Please do a black box 2
Great review.....this board is super fast in and out of the pocket...as you sad Chris the bottom venturi curve bites as you pivot....not so good in hollow tubes...like supers jbay...to much width etc
Stewart Fartknocker please!?
venturi effect like in fine tuning the intake and exhaust ports on an engine huh aka making a real "thruster" .. fucking sick
Pretty much the Weirdo Ripper with channels, no?
The venturi effect at the closest point in the walls will drop the pressure... that in itself will promote solid rail work. It should be pretty darn easy to redirect yourself on that fish.

Venturi concave acts like a diffuser on an F1 car.
Ya'lll gotta check out the Rusty vid for this model,… great shredding magic carpet. The point being, just surf it, show the vid of surfing it.
i want
fuck yea chris
#pickme :) :) Happy 2016 Chris & Shredshow
What might be a good video to me, might not be to you :-)
