    Main reason why most Hannah-Barberra cartoon (like Yogi Bear, Huckleberry Hound, Quick Draw McGraw, and Snagglepuss) have collars is that they can animate the heads and bodies separately so they can reuse assets which is why you usually see Yogi with the same walking animation on different episodes despite saying different things.

      Oh that makes a lot of sense. Reminds me of how characters like Homer Simpson or Greg Universe will have the beard completely separated from the rest of their face to make it easier to lip sync. I don't know if that saves any money it at least makes it easier

    • @erainmartinez8175

      I did not know that 1:21

  • @WooMaster777
    @WooMaster777 9 ปีที่แล้ว +39

    12:22 Fun fact. Yogi's collar was actually a revolutionary animation shortcut. Rather than having to animate the ENTIRE body just to move the mouth, the animators could crop the head right at the collar, saving thousands in manpower and time. That technique has since been employed to this very day. Thank you, William Hanna and Joseph Barbara. :)

  • @c-puff
    @c-puff 9 ปีที่แล้ว +85

    Oh btw, those cuffs, collars and stuff Hannah Barbera characters wear are for animation purposes, so they can "cut" the characters and only animate like... an arm and don't need to use an entire cel for each frame. Because Hannah Barbera had like a budget of $5 per episode.

    No, Bill Murray got in the Garfield movie in a very different condition. One of the writers of the movie was a guy named Joel Cohen. But Murray thought it was Joel Coen, who with his brother Ethan Coen, have been writers and directors for Big Lebowski, Fargo, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, etc. So, Murray only read a few pages, accepted the role, and started to do voicework later.
    But when he started doing this movie, he thought the script was awful, and doing the work was painful for him. When he saw the final cut, he hated the movie, and then he learned that it wasn't the famous Joel Coen, but just some other guy who just happens to have the same name as him.

      @genghisg 9 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      Yeah, it's weird, when Arin was starting to talk about it I thought he was going to talk about the Coen Brothers mix-up, which is pretty well known I thought, but he just start talking about the Lorenzo Music coincidence. Which maybe it was a reason a producer or casting director pursued Murray, but it's not the reason Murray wound up accepting the role.

    • @Frevoli
      @Frevoli 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      okcmaxk exactly - it would've been amazing. Hens why Bill Murray decided to take it

      ***** Yeah and apparently he was more involved with the sequel too. Like he just came in to read his lines in post for the first one but he was actually on the set and everything for the second.

    • @DapperDanLovesYou

      I think Arin was saying that was why they chose Bill Murray, not necessarily why Bill Murray agreed to the role.

    I love picnics. You can have really fun ones indoors! Like, instead of sandwiches in the basket it's beers. And instead of a picnic mat it's your bedroom floor. And instead of going with a loved one you can sit alone re-watching endless episodes of Game Grumps while my wife gets ready for another 'all-night yoga session' run by Jerry next door.

    Yogi's collar (not the character, the COLLAR) revolutionized how cartoonists could animate characters back in the day
    It's true; instead of animating the whole character (which includes different angles of the neck usually when they turn around), they could hide the fact that the neck turns by using a collar, ect. and just focus on creating and animating the torso and head, thus saving loads of money
    ...Which is why dozens and dozens of Hanna Barbara characters have collars and ties and such

  • @AllyGatorAnimator
    @AllyGatorAnimator 9 ปีที่แล้ว +230

    I'm not a violent person, but I will make it my mission to one day use the threat "I'm gonna slap the cake out of you." I think it would be wonderfully effective.
    Wow, so Yogi's name was based on a sports star? Hmmm...that gives me an idea
    *meanwhile, in a random animation studio*
    Okay guys, I know we've all been reluctant to make any celebrity-based cartoon animals after the Rover Dangerfield incident, but I think I have a few ideas that will blow your mind:
    Beeyonce
    Blake Gryphon
    Jason Seagull
    Guillermo the Toro
    Tiger in the woods
    And my personal favorite...Mike the Trout
    ...What do you mean "get out, you don't work here?"...and who are these two fine gentlemen in uniform?

    Yogi Berra's my fucking hero. Here's a couple of my favorite quotes of his.
    "If you don't know where you are going, you might wind up someplace else."
    "You should always go to other people's funerals; otherwise, they won't come to yours."
    And after a game he was asked in an interview: "Yogi, were you apprehensive about going up to bat in the bottom of the ninth with two outs?" His response - "no, but I was scared."

    Yogi: Ayyyy Booboo!! Let's go get us some pic-a-nic baskets!!
    BooBoo: But Yooogiii, what about the raaangeeer?
    And then, in all seriousness, he'd go:

    You wanna know why Yogi has a collar? It's to separate his head from his body during animation. That collar allows Yogi's head to move without his body moving with it, creating an illusion of additional animation and allowing Hanna Barbara to create the first version of layered animation. If you watch the cartoons you notice Yogi's body actually doesn't move much in a lot of scenes, it's mostly his head.
    That's right, Yogi's collar is the origin of layered Flash animation.

    That bit of trivia also involves Frank Welker who replaced Lorenzo Music(the original voice of Garfield) as Billy Murray's character in the animated Ghostbuster series. Frank Welker then went on to do the voice of Garfield in the most recent CGI episodes. It all comes full circle between Frank Welker, Lorenzo Music, and Bill Murray. They've all played each other character's which is really interesting.

      Half of the show is a mix of random hit-or-miss (mostly miss) jokes that'd work better on their own instead of being shoehorned into the plot as cutaways and flashbacks, and the other half is just Seth MacFuckland and his dumbass writers spouting some of the worst political opinions to ever be expressed and acting like they're 100% right.

    The reason so many Hanna Barbera animals have those crisp collars is it allows a natural 'separation' point between head and the rest of the body. Hanna Barbera is somewhat infamous for it's cost-saving measurers during animation, including, among other things, animating JUST a character's head, with the body from the shoulders down static.

  • @collegecomics18
    @collegecomics18 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    The main reason most Hanna Barbara characters had collars, bow ties, and cuffs was for animation purposes. They would animate the body either on loop or still/slight movement frames and then animate the head and hands that were cut off from the body (thanks to the articles of clothing) separate. For example: just watch a chase scene in almost any of their cartoons and notice the body set on a running loop while only the head moves. Or in some scenes, the head and body are different shades of color.

    The reason Yogi and most early Hanna Barbera cartoons had big unexplained collars/cuffs was to make the animation easier/cheaper - for most talking scenes they could reuse one frame for the body, just animate many frames of the head and use the collar to hide the seam.

    Dude, Yogi's collar was a technical thing,
    The Collar was the ancestor to "Layers" in modern image editing and animation
    It allowed to have the head animated seperately from the body without having to re-draw. The collar at that point would be slapped over the "seam" to hide the fact that it was 2 different images!
    I Love Yogi's collar

    The reason Bill Murray accepted the Garlfield role: One of the writers was named "Joel Cohen", and Bill Murray thought he was getting Joel Coen, one of the Coen brothers who were responsible for O Brother Where Art Thou, Raising Arizona, Fargo, and so many other great movies.
    Joel Cohen did have writing credit on Toy Story and Money Talks, and now his credits are Cheaper by the Dozen (out at the time Murray was making his decision), Daddy Day Camp and Evan Almighty.
