Thanks for this. I got Damon braces few days ago. My orthodontist told me this is the only method suitable for me because I had bone loss and was perio compromised.
Yes- Damon passive self-ligating braces deliver the lightest force, and this is especially important in cases with bone loss. Good Luck with your treatment! Dr. B
Thank you sooooo much for posting this 🙏 I’m in Texas. June 2024. I had the old style braces and I’m needing them again. I never heard of Damon braces before today
That is difficult to answer because it is case specific and varies from region to region in the U.S. The fee in downtown Manhattan or DC, for example, could generally be more than in suburban or rural areas. There may also be a significant variation from country to country. Insurance coverage is another variable that affects the fee. For example, some cases are simple and require less treatment and some are more difficult comprehensive cases. There are surveys available in the Journal of Clinical Orthodontics that list average fees by region in the U.S. An Orthodontic Specialist in the Eastern U.S may charge $4000 - $5000 for a more simple case. A comprehensive case might be $6000 +. The patient's portion of the fee would be reduced by the amount of insurance benefit. In some cases the insurance company limits the fee that a participating provider can charge. No matter what the patient's portion of the fee is, orthodontists typically offer payment plans with monthly payments to fit most budgets. A great smile and healthy bite is one of the most important investments a person can make! Dr. B
Doctor I have an overbite and an open bite with a weak chin. One of the orthodontists offered to extract teeth and use an expander, and the other offered Damon braces. I now have Damon braces, will it fix my weak chin and expand my palate? (I have a very narrow palate that’s what my orthodontist said)
Hi Deja. It is very hard to give an accurate opinion without examining a patient in person. If its a question of extraction versus non-extraction in a crowded cases, I would need at a minimum, good photos of the teeth & bite, a panoramic x-ray and a lateral cephalometric x-ray. You could go to my website barronbraces.com and through the virtual consult pop-up upload these for me to review. Dr. B
So Damon braces don't expand the palate from the maxillary suture, but they widen the dental arch by expanding the surrounding bone around the tooth. Does this type of expansion have any pros or cons over palatal expansion (from the suture)?
Hi Manan. Great question! You are correct. Low friction/Low Force PSL (passive self-ligation) with the protocols established by Dwight Damon does not widen the maxillary arch by separating the suture. The widening occurs by the resultant lateral vector of light, continuous force that translates the alveolar bone in a buccal direction. Bone is removed on the lingual cortical plate and added on the buccal cortical plate. Changing the size and shape of a bone is known as Bone Modeling. It is well established in the bone physiology literature. The same is true in the mandibular alveolus. The significance of alveolar bone modeling in this manner is that it is much less traumatic and less invasive. Regarding sutural separation, the forces are many magnitudes higher on the suture, the dentition and the alveolus. Studies have shown dehiscence of roots through the buccal cortical plate over time with high force sutural separation. It requires the use of more hardware that is intrusive for the patient, and adds to the expense of treatment in laboratory costs for construction of the expansion appliance. I have a link to an article that I co-authored on alveolar bone modeling on my Linked-In page (Tom Barron) if you are interested in reading more about this. Hope that helps!
@Barron Orthodontics Got it. Thank you Sir! Also, is this expansion just lateral (sideways) or towards the front as well? My concern is about the tongue space, I understand for sure that there will be more space sideways, but will there be more space towards the front/outwards as well?
@@mananvarma5944 Hi Manan. Another great question! Due to the tension of orbicularis oris and associated muscles, there is less arch expansion in the anterior part of the arch in the canine/first premolar area. Typically, the posterior part of the arch becomes wider. The arch form has been characterized as the "Damom Arch Form." Inter-canine distance can increase significantly, though, in cases with lingually inclined canines in the initial malocclusion. Dr. B
@@barronorthodontics445 Does your face change during and after the use of braces? I installed mine yesterday and i feel like my face will change its features
Hello. Did you solve any case which I mention below? I've overbite & I want to put braces. During root canal we have to open mouth continuously & during that my jaw got locked. Dentist said if during braces course if again jaw get lock then we have to stop treatment. Dentist said in future there is possibility of TMJ and they ask not to put braces. I also asked can I use aligner or Damon braces to take my teeth back. Dentist said in your case I'll not suggest aligner. Can you please guide us on the same.
Hi Ajay. Changing your bite can precipitate TMD symptoms. Often the symptoms are transient and get better once a proper occlusion is established. There is an argument for choosing clear aligners in cases with existing TMD. The aligners can act like bite guards, keeping your teeth out of occlusion. A stable joint position, typically in centric relation, is necessary before initiating treatment. The occlusion should be finished to that joint position. Today, there are no malocclusions that cannot be treated successfully with clear aligners. Hope that helps. Orthodontics should Dr. B
Hi Ajay. I don't use molar bands. I place bondable brackets on the first and second molars. Damon Ultima PSL first molar brackets and Ormco second molar brackets.

Hi Dr, can I email you my ortho pics to see if you’d be able to tell if I could benefit from Damon system braces? I’m trying to avoid extractions.
