  • In this webinar we heard from Grace Carr our Marine Advocacy Officer, who gave us a quick overview of what has happened so far with the NRL. We then had an in depth presentation from Dr. Guy Pe’er, who specialises in agroecology and conservation biology. He has a particular interest in agriculture, the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and how it affects both people and nature. He spoke about the importance of the EU Nature Restoration Law and what it means for the Common Agriculture Policy, the Green Deal, and the EU.

Thanks to Grace for the update on the EU NRL and to Guy for his insights. Your presentations encouraged me to actually read the legislation to understand marine issues and specific terminology including Guy's point about the use of "ecosystems" vs "areas". It was nice to see 3 seagrass habitats included in Annex II and will impact my approach in mapping seagrass beds.

Ecology must always go with the people not against. Ecology must = economy, both in micro and makro scale.

We should've been acting and creating good work to rehabilitate Ireland's nature. The economy, the type of work and exploitation is a major function in our inability to take action like the emergency it is. A crying shame at the state of things and deteriorating.
