I read something the other day from Erik, the guy who discovered them. He said that he has found them anywhere agates are found. If I was you, I'd hit some of your regular spots.

We had head lights and other flashlights, but we didn't need them. It's pretty easy to stay on the beach with the waves gently lapping to tell you you're in the right place.
Mother nature is so beautiful creating such stunning rocks.

Yeah, Sam and I get along really well. He's really mature for his age. I have taught him how to tumble, and he's every bit as patient as I am and willing to wait until the rocks are perfect before moving them to the next stage.
I don't know a lot about fluorescent minerals, but I do know that different minerals glow under different lights of different wavelengths. I had a less expensive 365 nm light and also an expensive 365nm light with a filter. The expensive one with the filter worked way better than the cheap one. This is what I bought:

I know you wouldn't buy from a U.S. site, but the light is made in China, so I'm sure you can get the same one there. There's one called the Convoy S8 that is even better from what I've read.

Great job, Rob! These things used to be all over before they became "popular". I have a three-wave uv light so in addition to the sodalite, there are lots of other goodies that glow.
My light made limestone glow slightly yellow. I tried one beach on Lake Huron and saw a lot more pale yellow because of all the limestone.

Welcome to the obsession that is flourescent sodalite!!!!! So happy that you and Sam finally got out for a night hunt. It's a different experience from the daylight hunt but it's magical and sticks with you. Also, neat stuff happens at the lake in the middle of the night. You get to be part of an exclusive world when most folks are asleep.
Yes, it was a very different way to hunt and a nice change. I'll be doing it again next time I'm up there. I tried one beach on Lake Huron with no luck, but I'm going to try another one soon.
I have a Facebook friend who recieved some from a person in Michigan. He turned them into guitar picks for him. They were awesome. Thanks for taking us along on your trip.
I'm surprised that they are strong enough for guitar picks. I use agate for picks. Maybe I'll make some too.

Actually, they've been known in the geologic community for years, it's just recently that they've been commercialized.

The rocks with lots of speckles look like exploding stars. The deep blue in them adds to that effect. So cool. You and Sam seem to have had a great camping trip together. Too bad the mosquitoes had to crash the fun. I've been in swarms like that but have always been able to get out of them. I hope they eased up as it got darker. Thanks for sharing the fun!
There were no mosquitos on the first beach and the second beach ended up not being bad at all. As long as we kept moving, they left us alone.
Love these. My brother and his family are in the U.P. right now. Hopefully they'll find some. So much fun to watch. The mosquitoes are bad in MN too. They can carry off small children and are the Minnesota state bird.
They ended up mostly leaving us alone as long as were were walking. In the back of my one acre lot is a tag alder swamp that's loaded with mosquitos. We usually can't sit on the back deck in the evening. Then we found out about Thermacells. If you haven't heard of them, you should look them up. They work great.

Yeah, we were really happy with what we found. We ended up just taking a few each and throwing the rest around the beach right in front of the campground.

There is sodalite in the rocks. That's what glows. They were discovered in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The Upper Peninsula is referred to as the U.P. by Michiganders and the people who live there are called "Yoopers". So the guy who discovered them called them "Yooperlites".

Great video Rob. I think Sam is right, some of them look like coal that's about half burned in the furnace. It i surprising how unimpressive they are in regular light.
I agree. They're nothing to look at in the daylight. Although, when I first got my light, I went for a hunt in my basement. I found a Yooperlite that I had picked up because it was a pretty rock even in the daylight. It didn't have as much sodalite as the ones we found on this hunt, but it was definitely a Yooperlite.

I just got to the UP today, and found one at the campground beach. Going to head to the North tomorrow! I have a Convoy, but for half the price, got the best light ever, a UniqueFire UF 1406. Wondering if the’ll let me in Two Hearted if I’m not camping there? I don’t want to drive the big RV up there!
@@nancymcshane3501 There's a pretty big parking lot that's not for campers. I don't think you'll have any problem. Plus, there isn't anyone there to tell you to go away. It's a rustic campground with only outhouses. The roads on the way there are gravel. I was in a Jeep and had no problem at all. I think you'd be fine, but I have never driven an RV.

I highly recommend it. It was lots of fun.
Try using yellow UV glasses when you go out next time, it's a lot easier on the eyeballs and a lot easier to spot the rocks. Awesome video
I knew about the UV glasses, but figured I wouldn't need them for a once a year thing. The second night my eyes were getting tired of looking at that purple glow though. I'll definitely order some glasses for next time. Thanks for the tip.

Some pine needles will glow like the yooperlites do also. Not sure if it's the sap or what. But the glowing part in the yooperlites is sodalite I believe.
Yes, it's sodalite. I don't think I hit any pine needles with my light. I might have to go shine it around the back yard one of these nights.

That was really interesting. Do these stones look like they’d be good candidates for polishing. And I wonder if they’d still glow after polishing. The mosquitoes are terrible in our part of Michigan this year. I sat out at our camp fire the last two nights with my sweatshirt hood over my head to keep them away. Thanks so much for sharing !!!
I got my light for my birthday in March. I immediately took it to the basement and shined it on some tumbled rocks that I picked up in Lake Superior. I actually found a Yooperlite that I had just picked up because it was a pretty rock. The rocks I got on this trip just look gray in normal light though. Anyhow, that other rock was polished and glowed just fine. Tumbling isn't going to remove the sodalite from the rocks, which makes them glow.
I plan to tumble the rocks I brought home and slice the big one. I'll make a video when I do.

What kind of blacklight do you use? I use a 100 LED blacklight. I have found a couple yooperlites with it but wonder if I would find more/easier with a different light. Finally! My other comments are from midwestslotking probably. So I thought I’d sign on here and subscribe. I found the yooperlites on the sandy LN road. Way back where the banks are super steep and not many people had been
Both nights we hunted from campgrounds. We walked about a mile away before dark and walked back in the dark. We did much better farther from the campgrounds.
That was fun!! Did you try shining your light into the water? Camping and rock hounding, doesn't get any better than that.
I did shine my light in the water and they can be found that way. I did not find any that way, however.

Mine is a 365nm light. It's Convoy S2 with a filter. I'm not sure what Sam had, but it was a much cheaper light. Most cheap U.V. lights are 395 nm. I have a light that cost about $10 that makes them glow, but not nearly as bright and it needs to be much closer.

Yooperlites are so cool. They're unexceptional looking in daylight, but amazing in UV light. I wonder why they've only recently come to light, so to speak?

I went to Marquette and had absolutely no luck I was devastated we made the whole trip up there to find some and spent $100 on a flashlight. You found some awesome ones
That’s a bummer. I don’t know if Marquette has them or not. I’ve heard that they can be found from Grand Marais to Whitefish Point. My sister has found them in the Keweenaw Peninsula. We did not find any very close to the campgrounds either. We walked about a mile away to start our hunt and they dried up as we approached the campground. If you were at an easily accessible place, that may have been the problem.
That's exactly right, Rob. You must get away from easily accessible areas to find them now.
This is SO cool! Geological fireworks! It reminds me of when I first found out that minerals fluoresce. May I ask what brand of UV flashlight you used, and was it short wave or long wave UV?
It's so interesting to find out what things in nature fluoresce. Just don't do this in your bathroom...

There are a lot of fluorescent minerals, so I wouldn't be surprised if you have something, even if it's not exactly the same as these.

I read something on Yooperlites, they can be found all around the great lakes. so more likely, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Ontario. So more likely!!!!!!!!

I looked on two different beaches on Lake Huron, but I didn’t have any luck. Next time I’m camping near Lake Michigan I might give it a try.
Well, I love learning new things, as I've mentioned before. I had never heard of these rocks so I googled them and learned all kinds of interesting stuff. How cool are they! They look so unassuming till that UV light hits them and then POW! Will you tumble them? Cut them?
I plan to cut the bigger one I brought home and tumble the others. I might even make a pendant, although it would only be good in haunted houses or somewhere there were black lights.

No, you need a good UV light. I have a Convoy S2 with a filter to filter out more white light. Cheap lights don't work very well.

Awesome finds! Ive been wanting to drive up from IL but its like 9 hours , might come up just to escape this heat .
It's been hot in Alpena this week. I'd check the weather and make sure it's not hot up there before you make the drive. When it's hot and humid, the stable flies come out, and they're awful. I have a full mesh suit that I carry with me just in case they're out.
Planning on a visit to the UP this coming weekend. 7/11 arrival from mid-eastern Illinois. Au Train area. Are the stable flies bad there as well? Any advice for the area would be great! My wife and I truly love your vlogs. Keep up the great work.

You should be able to see a spot to pull over on the side of the road. There's a well worn path between some big rocks going down to the beach. I would assume the stable flies would be bad anywhere on U.P. beaches in hot, humid weather. I don't live up there though, so I can't say for sure.
The next closest beach that I've hunted to there would be east of Grand Marais, which isn't very close. I'm sure there are other good beaches in the area, I'm just not familiar with them.

after coming back from Lake Superior, I bought a UV flashlight to check for yooperlites. I did not have any, at least they did not look like the ones on pictures, but many of the rocks showed a deep blue glow or specks on the surface. Any idea what that might be?
I brought home one small rock with a blue spot on it. It's just small. and it's more of a medium blue, I think. All of my rocks have blue specks on the surface, which I believe is just dust. It brushes off.
@@MichiganRocks I think you are right. I just rechecked the rocks and most of the blue specks can be brushed off, but on some it seems to be internal, especially some rocks containing quartz. I'll have to check in more detail

Erik Rintamaki is the guy who discovered them. He says he has found them wherever agates are found, including in Minnesota gravel pits. I'd give it a try. I went out on a Lake Huron beach and didn't have any luck, but I plan to try another Lake Huron beach.
where in Michigan are these found ?? Wait, are there no cool rocks in the LP?
Yooperlites came from Canada by the glaciers. I have found them in gravel pits even in landscaping gardens at hotels and other places.
I have an old gravel pit near St helen; I am gonna give it a go; Michigan is all glacial till

The two nights we hunted were at the Lake Superior State Forest Campground and the Mouth of the Two Hearted River Campground. My sister has found them in the Keweenaw Peninsula.
This makes me want to look at my rocks that I have brought home , with a uvlight, and see if any are yooperlites.
That's the first thing I did when I got my light and I found one.
When yooperlites first became a "thing", I went back through my boxes (and boxes) of rocks. I actually had some I found on Lake Michigan!
@@songbirdscreations-MargaretS Were they as bright as these? I have found that limestone turns a dull yellow, so all of my Petoskey stones glow a little.
Hi Rob. Yes, they glowed pretty bright! I am pretty sure they all come from the same source rock up in Canada, just made it down here courtesy of the glaciers!

Check out Lapis Lazuli, I just figured out that they also glow under UV.
I think I have a few pieces of that. I'll check it out sometime.
