The darkness you mention is mainly because Diana changed to song to a minor key from the original's major key - lending it the darker, more mysterious vibe. It is also perfect for Diana's voice. In my opinion the song is completely changed from a standard love song to a song which speaks of obsessive love - amazing and beautiful - Thanks for the reaction

age of about 11 she auditioned on a show for disadvantaged
children and sang/yodeled. It is called 'Jodel Time'...really
extraordinary...the audience absolutely loved her but the judges
didn't turn their chairs around, even though they were obviously
fascinated by her voice. They asked her to sing something else
and she sang a French song acapella...but she was not chosen.
What did she do? As the audience cheered her, she went up and
gave the judges a hug! Completely captivating performer, even at
the age of 11! I'd say watch her do Elvis' 'Can't Help Falling
in Love' (fantastic -- she makes it an entirely new song). And
also you could do 'Wicked Game' and 'Rechenka' both at the age
of about 15 in singing contests... utterly spectacular voice! Also she
sings a beautiful and uplifting 'Into the Sky!'

the performer. At the age of three in the middle of Russia's far
northern Winter she was abandoned, injured, at a bus stop where
she was rescued and sent to an orphanage. At the age of 5 she
was still traumatized and unable to speak properly. A massage
therapist who visited the orphanage trying to help kids, was the
first to recognize something special in this little girl, and
eventually adopted her. Diana was sent for singing lessons
because it was thought that this might help her learn to speak
without impediment.
Only
two years later she started singing in local theater, and in
street plays and performances. And soon after was entered in a
Russian TV music competition for disadvantaged children. By the
age of 10 she was winning local competitions, singing on live TV
shows, and her songs started showing up on TH-cam. Two months
ago, at the age of 18, her first performance during a new
Russian television competition with several other renowned
performers, has gone viral and has garnered hundreds of TH-cam
'reaction' videos, and millions of viewers.
Her
first song at the competition, an entirely new take on Elvis
Presley's 'Can't Help Falling in Love with You' has been called
mesmerizing, transcendental and other-worldly...it highlights
her uniquely deep voice, and effortless range from low to high,
along with her trademark dramatic and passionate interpretation.
Diana Ankudinova sings mostly in Russian, English and French.
She has also sung in other languages including Spanish, German
and Arabic. Singing in French, at the age of 10, on a Russian TV
show... a viewer: 'at the age of 5 she couldn't speak her own
language, how can one see this and still doubt past lives?'

A little context. Why did the blond lady, Yulia show "cobra pose"? The other "judge", Kirill, with the blank stare? All of the panelists in the judges box, except the guy at the top, Yusif Eyvazov (who is a guest star and a famous opera singer) are fellow competitors in this competition. They all sing and they judge each other (Diana gets to be a judge for the others as well). I think this song was Diana's first entry into the competition which includes 9 songs from varied required genres. To say she threw down the gauntlet is an understatement. Some of those "judges" who have to compete with that song are thinking (besides feeling shock at the performance itself) ... how can I compete with THAT?
