set up chamber so it's fueled by bike pump, and set up pressure gauge to keep "charges" consistent
use a ball valve between the chamber and barrel as trigger (it also means that you won't accidentally push the ammo into the chamber when loading)

Hey, a suggestion for making a potato cannon, the hairspray sinks, so it's smart to put the igniter at the bottom of the combustion chamber!! (I know this because I do a potato cannon contest every year) Also, Aqua Net works the best for hairspray.

I can usually find it at a Bed Bath & Beyond, but you might find some at a Walgreens.
I’ve made a mini potato cannon that can shoot bb’s from a pen and a pill bottle. We used aqua net we choose that from the amount of warning labels.

on a tank, the cannon is mounted to the turret, along with coaxial machine guns.

Good idea. I'd have also put in a reducing T-junction with a 90 degree brass ball valve for fast/easy fueling.
Considering how similar a potato canon is in operation to a black powder muzzleloader, "patching" your russet loads (paper towel over the muzzle, insert potato, drive in with ramrod, pray) to make a better gas seal should increase effectiveness, so long as you're also able to replenish the spent oxygen in the chamber between reloads. However, this could also theoretically increase cylinder pressures well beyond the operational design of the components and cause the device to literally explode in your face, so a remote test-firing platform with adequate blast protection is absolutely a requirement.
Sch40 is actually fairly tough stuff but you're also quite literally playing with explosives, so... try not to die.

Having been in Texas for 24 and having built numerous spud guns, they don't really care so long as no one complains. The firearm designation is to allow for easier legal action if someones actions deserve it.

Use heavy duty lock washers and interlock in a logical pattern and fashion. Bang them flat and seal it by brazing or soldering or JBWeld. Kevlar is a better alternative when considering weight. Plus, what are you going up against bullets?
Arrows? Cross bolts? Axes? Swords? Pikes? For just a cool looking chain hoodie to show off at the fair the washer plan is fine. For tactical apps make sure you perfect on a small scale model first.

Yeah, I was just saying "Wait, I didn't get my friday fix of MR!" ...and then the withdrawal symptoms started.
If you guys ever want a bit of an upgrade, strip the end of the wires, wrap it around a screw and use 2 screws as the prongs. They go further down in the chamber, closer to the axis of the hole so it will usually work a little better. Also screws will last forever and never have any failures. I built one over 6 years ago and it still shoots great to this day.

This is why I subscribed
I built a smaller version of this using a similar design but had a few modifications that seemed to help
1- Use 90% Isopropyl Alcohol (available at Walmart) spritzed with a water bottle
2- Sponge can be soaked in alcohol and attached in back, basically in a extra chamber where you put the end cap, works for not having to reload every time because the alcohol will evaporate
3- Use a dollar store hand held ballon/bike pump behind the sponge, attached how the spark is except behind the sponge
4- Use a T value with plug at base of barrel to load easier

Use a map gas torch (used for soldering copper pipes) with a nozzle/igniter combo connected to the chamber using acrylic tubing. If you press the button a little (before the igniter turns on), it will fill the chamber with a flammable mixture of fuel and oxygen. When you think that it is filled, press the button fully to ignite the mixture. Works great and extremely reliable! Can be dangerous if not used properly. PS - I am not responsible for any damages.

I got a tube from work that held gigantic poster paper and in the centre there was a steel pipe perfect size for a baseball wrapped in about 2 inches of cardboard(built around the tube permanently) and we turned it into a potato cannon using propane and compressed air fed into the gun by a needle for filling basketballs. we could shoot the baseball through four three-quarter inch Sheets of plywood and it would sound like a shot gun. Would also shoot tennis balls straight outta sight
