This song always gives me the chill... I've seen VdGG in 1977, and Still Life was a great moment of emotion... Peter gives always his best on this great song... Thanks a lot for sharin' this with us... Oh ! Peter, may you rest forever in still life....

This live rendition makes the song more accessible and easier on the ear, to my mind anyway. On the studio record, it is one of the most disturbing, chilling and harrowing songs about Peter's notion (in this song anyway) of life after death viewed as a perpetually withered inertia, frozen in eternal stillness. What a terrible end. Thank God it isn't true. Interesting that Peter was once a Jesuit chorister.
It is not about life after death, but about immortality itself. To me, the meaning is that if everyone lives to be immortal, there is nothing to fear, not even dying. Life would end up being an endlessly long cycle of ritual based on hedonism and pleasure, and it would eventually lose all of its meaning and become a life sentence with no chance of release. The ending metaphor of immortality being like an inescapable marriage to an old, withered hag is particularly striking.
“I Reach the last song of the set finally” Cela dit tout !

He DOES look older than 71, closer to 81 actually. And his heart attack was almost 20 years ago, so it can't be that. Well, some folks simply age fast.
Peter Hammill....always refused to compromise. True to his craft and honest with his message. Love you brother, thanks for the music.
Peter is a true genius

Peter Hammill is one of the greatest Singer/Songwriter/Poets ever fostered in England
Geir J Toffe, and perhaps in the WORLD

he´s 69 yrs old here. His voice is intact. What a wonderful artist he is.
I love the dude, but, man, he looks 79 or more!!! Hope he is well. Worried about his recent emergency surgery.. wonder what that was about.
@@ulfingvar1 again? it also happened a long while ago... Agree, im turning 60 soon, this man looks much much older, time runs for everyone.
Peter Hammill, one of the greatest singer/composers of our times, brilliant!
Peter Hamlet ! Underrated genius .
Wow, it's impressive how even looking so physically frail his voice is still so powerful! It's like it didn't change at all.
he's still healthy and keeping himself well, he's just one of those people who are built very slim and frail. He's always been like that
@@avi_s0ncin0 he has been on the edge several times but he is a survivor.
Peter Hammill - a Homer of our time!
I was there. Fantastic night

I'll never forget the night when my friend turned me on to him. Great talent.
My hero. I hope to be half the man he is when I have his age.
"If I'm not the man I was/Then who is he?"
He's just a man and that's why we love him.

Whoa that's like a time machine taking me back. Sounds like I'm 100 years old, maybe I am lol.

I've been losing my mind for some time but that darkly sunny music, among many others, helps me to float, to keep my head above water💥
beautiful version! congratulations!
Grazie Peter!
Wonderful. This was always one of my favourite VDGG songs. Such powerful words.

What a caricature. Like your classmates 20 years after.
How is he a caricature? What are you talking about dude?
Hammill is beginning to look very old :P lol
Invisible Drummer uh that’s because he is.
Just saying
Yeah man, it worries me, I wish I had started listening to these guys 10 years ago, he’s already had a heart attack I guess
Well, he's about to turn 71. I'd say he's looking pretty good considering that. I mean, so many people have become a fat fuck by that age.
He DOES look older than 71, closer to 81 actually. And his heart attack was almost 20 years ago, so it can't be that. Well, some folks simply age fast.
The irony of your comment is that this is a song about the idea of being immortal, and how miserable it might be.
a crumbled man - lost his hair to sebborreha likely - small voice - disjointed words - confused man nonsensical - he's fried up done
