    Man, this is the most affably chilled-out, upbeat, what-you-saw-is-what-you-got/accepted, wild-camping vlog I've ever watched - with or without that snake making an exotic appearance! Hope it survived the inclement conditions as happily as you did, mate. Yep, this was a lot less about gear techiness and performance figures and more about the weatherproof spirit of simply enjoying life in the great outdoors. You appear to have achieved some sort of zen level of bushcrafting existence, with your steak and powdered potato cooked alfresco 😊 Long may you live and prosper wherever you lay your hat, or frying-pan, in the hereafter, bro. I shall remember to look out for you when I arrive there, in that great big campsite where quiet waters flow through green pastures...RIP Kev.

      I was using the Gopro Hero 7 black and the Sony AX53. I wasn't even using them in highest quality recording. Not even close. The Gopro can do 4K 60fps and Sony 4K 30fps. I was shooting in 1080p 60 and 30 fps based on how much light and rendered at 30pfs. I used a Rode video Miro mic with dead cat on the Sony and native audio on the H7B though have worked out rigging a mic which was shown on my FB. To be honest the Gopro H7B is amazing for what it is. Could be the ultimate content recorder for what we both do which is camp in awful weather. I was able to film in hard rain and the camera can do this without a case and the native audio unlike the 5 and 6 is actually ok. In fact the camera can go 30 feet down. The dynamic range isn't as good compared to the larger sensor in the Sony but it's not bad. Plus I can keep it inside an inner pocket during cold weather so the battery won't freeze. It has something called linear mode that negates much of the action cam fisheye plus a wider and super wide fisheye for taking in everything. I also have a Nikon D5300. It requires manual operation to do video but the sensor is larger and the 1080p nice. I finally spent the time learning how to do it. Maybe I will use that for some videos as well.

    Sorry about the dripping on you and your supplies in the tent. Seeing the river running fast reminded me that you got your water there the night before. And that reminded me when I was in elementary school in the 50s and early 60s, when they warned us not to drink rain water or snow because of all of the strontium-90 in the air from all of the nuclear testing back then. I guess that was over long ago, and maybe was never a problem anyway. That was just the warning back then.

      The environment has gotten better in the USA but many people are either too young or lack knowledge to know it. New England for example was clear cut. Now it's the most forested area in the lower 48. Bears and moose have returned to my town. Eagles take my goldfish from the pond. The alligators are back when I go down south. Deer were once on the brink back in the 20's...1920s.... Yet we are told it's getting worse. Thanks for watching brother!

    Would the Seek Outside Rain/Snow cap for the pipe help you in that rainy situation? I was told from them it can help a bit with avoiding sparks on tent as well?

    • @MegaWoodswalker
      @MegaWoodswalker  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No sure. Very rarely is there enough water down the pipe to produce an issue (only had that happen 3 times in 15 years of backpack hot tenting). Also I think the idea is to prevent embers or pipe flames from hitting low hanging trees limbs. The sparks would probably be directed to the sides of the shelter rather than away but having not used the gear item this is pure speculation. I would be curious of their reasoning as they know about it more than myself. Thanks for watching!

    • @jasonb7865
      @jasonb7865 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MegaWoodswalker Well here's their response to me about some things worrying about sparks hitting tent as you are my inspiration for why I just bought a Cimarron and half nest (stove soon once I can afford it):
      First, sparks or embers are usually only an issue with poor quality punky or really sappy wood in humid and zero wind conditions. The standard damper comes with a spark arrestor that works quite well. Second, if you get a spark hole it is a tiny pinhole that can be permanently fixed with a bit of seam sealer.
      Third, the spark arrestor ultra won't kill sparks any better than the standard (you use one or the other, not both due to airflow/draft), what the ultra is good for is creosote buildup and clogging as you can unclog it while burning the stove. The rain /snow cap will help some with sparks as it forces a 90 on the gasses, but I probably wouldn't use it for that purpose personally.
      I only worry about sparks if I have crappy wood and no wind.

    • @MegaWoodswalker
      @MegaWoodswalker  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sparking wood is more based on what type of species you're burning. Hemlock will spark and burn pin holes in the tipi if given the chance. Maple hardly ever. Local knowledge of the burn characteristics and tree ID (can get confusing when picking sticks separated from parent trees in a mixed forest) helps. They are correct about pin hoies being easy to fix. I seriously question the 90 degree angle concept. This more applies to canvas walled tents with the pipe going out the side IMHO but again never tried that pipe addition so without field experience I would take their word over my speculation on this.
      I totally disagree about one or the other in terms of the ultra and might just buy one to test it. For example I was burning their stove with my DIY robber which has a baffle plate plus A frame spark screen in addition to their standard damper/screen. I have also burned with their system plus a Kifaru collar with two additional screens. So I know it can handle additional screens. Then again I am experienced with running less than air tight tent stoves. Usually an extra spark screen etc etc means keeping the door closed longer on start up.
      Once the system is hot enough the draft improves. However if someone doesn't know the balance and this changes with local weather, air pressure, temp and fuel having a less than ideal draft on start up could be an issue. All of this said It's not as complex as it sounds.

    • @jasonb7865
      @jasonb7865 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MegaWoodswalker Ohhh ok, that explains quite a bit alright thank you. That explains why you're always avoiding hemlock, I just thought it didn't burn good or it's tough to work with. I don't know hardly any trees except spruce, pine and maple. I was always wondering what this jerry rig setup you have on your stove with a friend of mine, so it's a DIY robber.. Maybe you can make a pro tip video on creating the best draft and stuff, that would be awesome. I also questioned the 90 angle on the rain/snow cap because obviously if the one side of the 90 degree is pointed right at the tent then you could be directing it towards your tent compared to just shooting straight upwards in a regular pipe. Love your vids, I've seen other hot tenters but I truly "GOT IT" once I seen yours, you make it look so easy, especially easy to survive when you can go so far out the zombies can't even get to you anyway. Of course you do know that "walker" can mean a zombie lol

    • @MegaWoodswalker
      @MegaWoodswalker  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      LOL! Yes I do. Burn the Maple. It's not only the sparks but the coaling properties and density. I can put more Maple in terms of weight into the small firebox than spruce and pine. Also it burns down to a fine ash. I find Eastern White Pine to leave more ash in the stove. Another good thing to do is test out you're local wood in the stove burning running outside the shelter. As a stand alone stove. This way you can see how it burns and know what to expect before using it in the field. It's best to burn the stove the first time in a controlled environment because of the initial difficulties setting up the pipe.

      Yes. That can also be a con in really cold sub zero conditions. Sometimes a slower burn just can’t get the comfortable T shirt weather inside the Tipi. But here is was good. Thanks for watching.

    So would the liner have prevented all the wetness on the inside of the shelter and kept your gear dry?

    • @MegaWoodswalker
      @MegaWoodswalker  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It seems to on my 4-man which has the liner installed however when it comes to condensation one never knows as conditions vary. I have been in rain without the liner and it was not a problem. The environment is super saturated with water right now so bet that worked against me. Overall in colder weather the liner reduces contact with a frosted over canopy. Water vapor passes one way and gets trapped on the other side so the drips run down the liner. Plus a liner is a grounded double wall to reduce drafts. If this rain keeps up I might just start using it again and deal with the extra weight. Thanks for watching!

    • @rbljackson
      @rbljackson 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yeah I asked because I have the liner in my sawtooth, but i also have the supertarp which does not have a liner. If that happened in my supertarp, it would get old pretty quick because there isn't as much room in there. Id have to run the stove more i guess to combat that issue.

    • @MegaWoodswalker
      @MegaWoodswalker  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rbljackson I have a UL bivy sack from MLD. mountainlaureldesigns.com/product/mld-superlight-solo-bivy/ Maybe 9 oz. I got it for my paratipi which is similar to the supertarp though lower on the back end. The plan was for use in the smaller single walled heated shelter however never put it to the test for that application. For my sled gear I have an USGI Gortex bivy which works great but too heavy to backpack as an additional shelter item.... over 2 lbs though have packed it for tarp/bivy camping.

      Bacon will be back. :) I used two new cameras. Sony AX53 and Gopro Hero 7 Black. The Gopro was actually better than I expected. The linear mode looked much more normal compared to my Sony AS20 action cam that has more of a fisheye look which is sometimes good... other times not so much. With the Gopro I can do both. Waterproof down to 30 feet without a case so can just go out into the rain and the fogging is less. The image which was the most stable came from the Gopro however being pure electronic stabilization it falls apart in low light. No free lunch. LOL! Thanks for watching brother.
