I've been very interested in Machiavelli lately. I read The Prince once at face value, only to later realize he's not actually fond of monarchs at all, or at least that he much prefers a republic. In fact there are several discrepancies like that I noticed so far, including The Prince being dedicated to the heir of the Medici family whom he really isn't fond of, likely to convince them to reinstate him. Turns out there's no way his most famous work was written 100% sincerely, and there being at least one layer of irony in there transforms it from being a dry and callous political treatise to being about a cynically unreliable narrator writing a job application for an employer he hates. I'm now at the point where his political writings are purely a means to an end for me to find out more about the guy himself. There's just something really charming about his many layers that actively lead you to false conclusions about him if you don't take them as a whole
It was common for Italians writing in that period to dedicate it to the local lord. Probably good for their health too, if you know what I mean. Casanova dedicated his book to his local lord too .
Great video, too many use one one work from one person centuries ago and ignore all the rest in favor of politicizing it. Adam smith’s invisible hand being the most prevalent to be raised to a pedestal or criticized by default.
Dave! I am in college now and definitely taking advantage of your chemistry classes! Thanks! Have you ever thought about teaching for Kahn academy? Man I hope they'd reach out to you... They could use your videos
Every person on the planet needs to know your channel and subscribe. Words cannot express how grateful I am for your hard work Dave. You are truly an intelligent person, and I even think you could be the next Carl Sagan. You are one of the best teachers the world has to offer. Keep on spreading the science and demolishing pseudoscience.
Thanks for another good video. Regarding Machiavelli's "The Prince", I believe that what he is doing is writing a description of what the prince must/should do to maintain power and political stability without him (Machiavelli) taking into account the ethical aspects of it. I believe the premises are quite clearly given. The book is therefore entirely descriptive in its instructions, and has not the slightest shred of normativity. The most common misunderstanding is those who interpret the book as normative, and therefore condemn the content and the author as "evil", or something. They completely miss what the book is trying to convey.
Can you discuss the dumbing down and mass grouping of people so they are easier to demographically market and control narratives. I.e all thing being left / right, manufacturing consent, make you believe unreasonable do unreasonable etc etc

What do you think about some alternatives to capitalism or rather, more progressive forms of it like ESOPs or "every business is an NPO"? My philosophy right now is veering towards a decentralization of power without decentralizing rights. The issue with capitalism is out of control exploitation of the supply. On the other end, I see how it rewards the best productivity and efficiency. I prefer natural orders over regulation systems if they can be adopted. Our regulation-centric ideas are out of focus. Even capitalists and 401k holders don't really want out of control environment abuse but for savings, it's the only means being offered. These are good citizen, evil system problems. Systems that can't be fixed with idealistic regulation.
I really have difficulties understanding philosophy. I just can't seem to wrap my brain around it. I'm not really a student of philosophy but I had hoped to gain some understanding of it but it seems the philosophers have their own language and even when I look the definitions up it still doesn't make sense. I'll keep watching though because it is interesting.

I hope he does a video explaining Thomas Paine's books: Common Sense, Rights of Man, The Age of Reason, and Agrarian Justice

Yeah honestly, I feel like there was a _nagging_ feeling I was being Poe's lawed when hearing it.
Honestly, yeah. I agree!

Casanova dedicated his book to his local lord too .
Turns Machiavelli wasn't really Machiavellian.

I think The Prince was written as satire to highlight the disadvantages of monarchy.

In my opinion, we could use more of our leaders taking a page from Adam's book right now.
