While this is a good live version, I generally agree with you. I always recommend people listen to the studio version first so as to hear how a song was meant to be heard. Later they can listen to a live version. I've seen live versions recommended to people that were not worth hearing. The sound was so bad you could understand what was being sung. With rare exceptions, it's always the recorded version that becomes a hit, not the live version.
No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature is actually a collaboration between band members Burton Cummings, the lead singer and guitarist Randy Bachman, also of Bachman Turner Overdrive. Burton had written the "No Sugar Tonight" part and Bachman composed "New Mother Nature", and the two decided to merge their songs into the great one you've just reviewed. Awesome pick!
The guitarist for The Guess Who was Randy Bachman. He was responsible for writing a number of their hits. He left the group in 1970 due to health problems and wanting spend more time with his family. He got together with his younger brother Robbie Bachman and had Fred Turner join them and Bachman-Turner Overdrive was born in 1973.

They have reunited several times over the years. These guys are not in the current version of the band. Great songs and great memories.
No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature was originally written as two songs: one written by lead singer Burton Cummings and the other by lead guitarist Randy Bachman. Since they were written in the same key, they combined them into one song.
Oh Yes, I'm in junior high again, and loving these guys. Burton Cummings is a such a great singer and pianist. What a treasure. I love this. And of course they have a lot more than what's on the greatest hits. All of those songs were in constant rotation on the radio for years. And I love how as they get into the second song, in the chorus, the so-called scatting, is basically from the first song and then at the end they combined it even more with the backing vocals echoing lines from the first song in a round. The round is even more complex and fleshed-out on the studio recording, it's worth a listen. And we should definitely note how great these guys are, not only as musicians but as backing vocalists as well. Burton Cummings (incredible singer) is the lead singer most associated with the majority of their career, although they did have a different one earlier and that stuff is good as well. But not only could the other guys sing incredible backing vocals, the arrangements of those backing vocals are really wonderful. They don't just sing along with every phrase,, they emphasize certain words and parts of the phrases and then of course they do that round at the end.

The Guess Who nailed this whole show that you're watching! The guitarist is Randy Bachman, you already reacted to Bachman-Turner Overdrive. I would suggest that you listen to Undun by the Guess Who.

The Guess Who was another reason I wanted to pick up a guitar. I got my first for Christmas when I was 7 years old. Went to a school of music a year later. I wanted to learn Gordon Lightfoot and the Guess Who first. My very cool teacher said; "okay sure". I learned their music freehand first, and then I learned how to read the music and theory after. One of my favourite Guess who songs, especially like how at the end of the song they are blending them together. There are lots of Burton's songs from his solo career, "Stand Tall" "I will play a rhapsody" , and "Break it to them gently" are among my favourites of his.
Man ya,ll take me back, with this great tune. I loved coming up in the 70,s! It seemed like we waited in great anticipation for every new song, and we're rarely disappointed, because the band,s were so creative and good!
This live version is pretty good, although it's lacking the full effect when compared to the studio/FM radio version. The Guess Who baby!!! Really good band, and really good song. You gotta hear their song *AMERICAN WOMAN* next.
Went to a Rock n Roll auction for a charity in the 90s. Burton was there penning lyrics and autographs. I sat with him on the piano bench as he sang ....lovely guy!
it's amazing how many of these lyrics I recall so many years later. I'm so happy to see a younger generation appreciatiing the amazing music we grew up listening to.
It's so fun to watch the two of you! ☺ If you have not done them yet, 3 of my favorites are "American Woman", "These Eyes" and "Undone". All massive hits! Thanks Jay & Amber, you made me smile! 😃🥰
One of my all time favorites bands. Saw them 3 times in concert and each show was better than the last. The guitar player is Randy Bachman who started Bachman Turner Overdrive when he left the guess who. But years later they reunited.
Not too many bands were capable of combining 2 songs into 1... and not just playing them back to back like everyone else! They were one of our better Canadian bands! Great reaction!👍🎶
According to Burton Cummings, whose show I attended a few year back, he mentioned that this mash up came about because he and Randy Bachman were writing this song and had different ideas about how it should go so they mashed up their individual versions. Probably one of the first mash ups to be done.
The whole greatest hits album is a must for every roadtrip!!!! I’m from Winnipeg where most of these guys are from and where the band formed. I was walking thru the WPG airport very late one night waiting for my parents super delayed flight when a man came up from behind me gave me a playful shove and a hey how ya doin and kept going. There was no one else around everything was closed so he stunned me but he was obviously harmless . It was unfortunate that he was already out of earshot before I realized it was Burton Cummings the lead singer. I was so upset that I couldn’t tell him how much I admired and appreciated him and his work. Him and Randy Bachman who you did listen to already are definitely some of Canada’s underrated greats. Love them!!!
They had this name because when they first came out the record company wanted to present them as being like a mystery British band( the British Invasion popularity being at its height)
When the Guess Who came to Cleveland nobody would go with me to see them so I went by myself. It was a fantastic concert and not the first time I realized you can have a great time seeing legends all by yourself.

Burton Cummings still singing today and performing with Randy Bachman on a recent tour, both later Randy formed BTO (Bachman Turner Overdrive) and Burton became a solo artist career as well. I am a grandmother now, but I am 8-9 years old when I listen to these greats. Lori.C.
Gotta say, J's airdrum skills have leveled up lately.
BTW, The Guess Who's track "She's Come Undone" is soooooooo good and needs to be heard.
I was so blessed to grow up during the best music ever! Love the Guess Who! Thank you for the memories!
😁😁😁😁
One of my favourite Guess who songs, especially like how at the end of the song they are blending them together. There are lots of Burton's songs from his solo career, "Stand Tall" "I will play a rhapsody" , and "Break it to them gently" are among my favourites of his.
Ok...heard this SO many times on my radio growing up and nowadays...but never heard it live. SO MUCH BETTER! That's my first time reaction!
Really need to listen to The Grass Roots! A great 60's band!
🤩🤩🤩🤩
The complete title is, "No Sugar Tonight / New Mother Nature."
A great song for them.
These Eyes..is an amazing song. Beautiful.
The Guess Who are one of my absolute favourite bands! I especially love this track. Thanks for the walk down memory lane y'all. ❤️
it's amazing how many of these lyrics I recall so many years later.
Love it. Thanks. For listening to some live music by these phenomenal bands from the 60s and 70s..🎸
Burton Cummings is an amazing performer.
Yes he is! I saw him twice in the late 70's, he is an all round entertainer!
Let’s get Rockin! Incredible band
One of my all time favorites
bands. Saw them 3 times in concert and each show was better than the last. The guitar player is Randy Bachman who started Bachman Turner Overdrive when he left the guess who. But years later they reunited.
Neil Young "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" & "Cinnamon Girl"
Not too many bands were capable of combining 2 songs into 1... and not just playing them back to back like everyone else! They were one of our better Canadian bands! Great reaction!👍🎶
thankyou for featuring Canadian talent! They have many songs would be a good rabbit hole for sure
More please! ☮️💜
According to Burton Cummings, whose show I attended a few year back, he mentioned that this mash up came about because he and Randy Bachman were writing this song and had different ideas about how it should go so they mashed up their individual versions. Probably one of the first mash ups to be done.
Another Canadian treasure are the “Tragically Hip”.
They were Canada’s secret gem
Yes!!!
I listened to them all the time when I was young, even my mom liked their music. ❤
Love this great Canadian Iconic band!!! 🇨🇦 🍁 🇨🇦
I grew up with this band in Canada as well. Burton Cummings (lead singer) is on my all time list of the best male voices ever!!!!
Absolutely digging this group and song
Now you're hitting stride with the Classics!! 😎
When the Guess Who came to Cleveland nobody would go with me to see them so I went by myself. It was a fantastic concert and not the first time I realized you can have a great time seeing legends all by yourself.
Great song! Burton Cummings had a great solo career as well.
Omg..I had thier greatest hits on 8-track in the 80's! American Woman, These Eyes...love them!
Listen guys ! If your wanting a hidden gem of a song just as you were shocked about Mr Big the other day . Here’s one for you and trust me you’ll be shocked. Don’t say I didn’t tell you so . Do the original video of ,
Cheap Trick “ The Flame “ your missing out if you don’t react to this . It’s Fire 🔥
Ready for 2 songs on one, both great on their own...get ready. This is what happened frequently in the greatest era in modern music, 60s-70s. Another group that would do several different "songs" in one is Blood, Sweat and Tears....
I actually like the studio one on this. Great song
My first rock concert, 1970. I was thirteen years old and saw these guys for $5.00. Great show.
RABBIT HOLE
EDIT:
please listen to the recording version of this you’re so much of the blend of instruments and voices. Their drummer is awesome but he plays so quietly and less you listen to the recorded you can’t really begin to understand how good the man is so please do yourself a favor because it will certainly put it on your playlist if you hear the recorded version. Peace love and joy to you and yours
I know I was just a kid of 9 but I remember my older brother's sisters and cousins watching when a Canadian won the best new vocalist of the year and I think 1970 I can't remember but I know he sang for The Guess who or he was the lead singer and I'm hearing these songs now and I'm going yeah that was it so thank you God bless this was a childhood dream
Love the Guess Who! You should always try to find a live video!
My first rock concert was the Guess Who in spring 1971, the original members for that era, at Michigan State University, East Lansing MI, next door to Lansing, my home town....I was 15. Indoors in an the athletic building...never saw so many joints lit up in one place and no cops arresting anyone, lol. this is some kind of reunion concert much later. This song has been also talked about as sugar begin a drug reference...The Guess Who was Canada's Beatles and we here in the USA loved them!
I sooooo love Burton Cummings, the lead singer. I wore out his solo albums!! ❤
I must say you have best taste!!! Same here, I couldn't get enough of "Stand Tall" and "I'm Scared." Still can't.
I totally agree with everything you said! Loved his solo work!
@@janicetrimmell6897 - Awww, Shanandora! As usual, you are way too sweet! Especially, when your musical knowledge runs rings around mind. As far as what we prefer, I think we were separated at birth! LOL
The two songs you mentioned are wonderful and amoung my favorites, but I also played the heck out of "Your Back Yard" and his cover of Gilbert O'Sullivan's "Nothing Rhymed".

@@DianaJG8 Oh Good Grief I love these two. The lyrics all came back to me. Another stellar album from the year 1976!!! If we weren't separated at birth, we should have at least known each other in high school. I went through this thing around Thanksgiving where I had to listen to "Stand Tall" every night. I've also done that at various times with "Too Much Heaven" to fill my head with uplifting thoughts. The song I wake up to is "Nights on Broadway." I hope you are already asleep this night. I am headed there.
Burton Cummings still singing today and performing with Randy Bachman on a recent tour, both later Randy formed BTO (Bachman Turner Overdrive) and Burton became a solo artist career as well. Burton and Randy can be found on facebook and during the pandemic Burton performed from home at times on piano.
I've been waiting for this one for ages (and City of New Orleans by Arlo Guthrie)
You should now listen to the studio version of this song. Its more refined (as you would expect) but this live version was very good.
The Guess Who "Shakin' All Over" & "These Eyes"...MUST HEAR Classics...Truth!!
My fav from the guess who!! Again I think I can say not a bad song from this terrific band!! His voice tho! Thx guys!!
For those of us that grew up in the 60's and 70's, we were SO SPOILED ROTTEN musically, it was AWESOME!! The Guess Who were a HUGE group back then, and then Randy left and formed BTO and they became a HUGE band also. There was SO, SO, SO, SO, SO MANY GREAT bands and artists back then it was truly mind boggling.
If you found a GOOD radio station, they would play hit after hit after hit after hit after hit all day and all night long and not a clunker in the bunch, it was a very special time to be alive.
I am thankful that all these videos exist so that generations that followed us can experience the talent and skills of these AMAZING groups and artists. Man do I EVER MISS the 60's and 70's.
YES! More Guess Who is always welcome. For a beautiful song try "Do You Miss Me, Darling" I would also recommend "Running Back To Saskatoon"
My brother and I saw them live in OKC in early 90's and they sounded the same live. Great memories of a great band!!
