    1:07 Hey, m46od!
1:15 The "b" family could refer to every engine they made since 1944 (B4B) to the 2010's (B63XX engines). Soltierally every gas engine they ever made. The b19, b21, b23, b200 and b230 were all very similar to one another, and i guess you could call them the "redblock" family, or just Volvo SOHC 8v family. Then there was also the 4valve b204 & b234, tho these werejust b200 and b230 engines with another head.
    2:13 there were dohc versions!
2:46 This is an issue with all old engines. Ignition parts, rotors & caps wears out.
3:10 B230s can safely do 200-250hp, if set up right. At 300hp you're pushing it. The turbo var. of these engines only did 170-180hp or so from factory!
3:57 Got a 1987 740 gle (early model, so 1986 body) and wires are holding up good. Might depend on where you live, of course. Not an issue with the engine itself tho.
4:44 Depends on which year of b230f, the ones with lh2.2 had a sensor in the distributor instead.
4.54 Another common issue with the b230E is the car could be blowing a 25A fuse (no. 12 or 13, dont remember),in that case your fuel relay could be defective (happend to me and i had to tow my car) It is a green relay sitting behind the fuses in the same plastic box.
6:28 Woah! That there is a late 144 (1972?). Which means its probably rocking a b20! wrong clip:( Still sounds great

I would bet big money that the wires are holding up good because they've already been replaced. Many cars were rewired not one, but two decades ago.

Volvo solved the engine wiring harness problem for the 1988 model. The 1988 is the best year of the 240 due to the harness and the LH 2.4 troubles of an '89+.

I still drive one, a dark blue 940 turbo, its my first car, lucky me honestly. Most people in my region (somewhere in SEA) drive MPVs and SUVs. Though where i'm at, parts are a nightmare to find if its not engine/drivetrain parts.

AAAHHH yesss the good ole ford Pinto block ..... I mean red block. I love how manufacturers compete with each other but share a ton of stuff. The US ford 2.3T guys have figured out you can run the 90's volvo doch head on them since they are just a modified red block which is also just a modified ford 2.3, so everything lines up. Then we come full circle to ford buying volvo and using their platforms to build their new cars, and sometimes using their engines.

It doesnt just bolt on. The bore centers and most of the head bolt locations are close enough. Water and oil passages are sorta close. It takes some pretty hefty modifications to the block and head

The picture of 531 head you displayed is the exact head i just bought off ebay. Let me tell you... that guy screwed me. Its off a boat engine so the #3 exhaust port is eaten up with corrosion and the #4 exhaust port which was described as "excellent" has been repaired in a very crude manner with a steel section of pipe shoved in it and weld globbed around it. I disassembled it to find it full of mud and debris. Its ruined. I basically did the guy a favor by doing a complete disassembly so that it can be machined by whatever brave son wants to take that on. Working on trying to return it for a refund. As you might guess the guy but is not a very good communicator. Anyone here want to buy it?

Redblocks are only "problematic" because of their time on this earth
Most engines havent experienced such problems becauss theyre unable to surpass 300k and not experience head gasket failure, lower bearing failure, etc
Id much rather deal with its small issues that i can reach and correct, than deal with the lengths to overhaul.
Id be curious if anyone is running these engines on a propane system at this point, honestly

    • @marcinjedrol
