  • The story of American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer whose dramatic intersection with Lewis Strauss ultimately led to the fall of both men. Christopher Nolan weaves the hearings for the nomination of Lewis Strauss to US Secretary of Commerce and Oppenheimer's success in leading the Manhattan Project. However, Oppy's past mistakes and associations from his youth end up defining him moreso than his title as the father of the atomic bomb.

After this review I am curious about the Cinema/TV/Audio setup at Alachias place. Something that give a better experience than Imax+Dolby must well put together. 🤔

    • @Alachia

I forgot to mention the most important aspect of my viewing experience at home.... NO ONE talking during the movie. But yeah, my family has always been into audio visuals. All about the best picture quality/sound set up. That's how I grew up because my dad was obsessed with it. I remember us constantly testing out speaker surround sound setups with the matrix and we had to get it just right so you literally feel the bullet buzzing by each ear.
I'm not as obsessed as the rest of my family about visual quality up to a certain point though because I honestly can barely tell the difference between 4k and HD on a good screen. They all have OLED but I settled from the 85" Samsung Frame because I wanted to use it as art more than watch movies.
Audio is 7.1 Klipsch DS-160CDT in ceiling speakers. If I had my own media room, I would go with ear level speakers because you just don't get the same audio quality from over head sound..but still.. better than theaters who tend to mistake volume for clarity.
When I watched Oppenheimer in Imax, the back of three people's heads were in my eye line and I can't tell you how much that irked me. I just want it to be me and the film. I don't want to see, smell or hear anyone else.

Showing the first atomic bomb explosion should feel like witnessing some H.P. Lovecraft shit, because that's how some of the people who witnessed it felt. It was beyond horrifying to those who understood the consequences of what they had done.

@@Gaia_Gaistar Find the super high speed footage on-line that used mirrors to capture the first instant of the detonation before the camera itself was vaporized. I think it was for the Trinity Test on July 16th, 1945 but it could have been on a later test. It is where the finger appears out of the first nanoseconds of the fission release. The Hand of Creation both terrifying and awe inspiring at the same time. We have indeed unleashed knowledge we cannot put back in the bottle. Things do not look good on where we are now rapidly going on this hapless planet. Indian Vedic Hindu, Persian Zoroastrian, Roman Mithraic, and Egyptian Gnostic "Malachi 4:1" DOES INDEED appear to be upon us. Look it up! I watched it at a Dolby Cinema and the explosion of the A-bomb was violent and intense to say the least. The Dolby Cinema near me has excellent sound and tactile transducers built into the seats and when that bomb hit it hit fast and hard. Keep in mind this was not a Hydrogen bomb, it was a much smaller and less powerful atomic bomb, but it was a potent bomb nonetheless. I thought it was adequately represented.

I agree, the explosion felt small. I studied physics and really wanted to witness a scientifically accurate portrayal of that blast, the same way we got that incredible black hole in Interstellar. Instead, it looked like they just blew up a few barrels of gasoline in slow motion. I was really disappointed in that.

We were always shown the mushroom cloud footage in school. You would see the flash and then the large mushroom cloud. It wasn't until many years later (as an adult) that I stumbled across some different footage. It showed a small sun being formed at the time of the blast. That freaked me the hell out. I was scared of things like this before, but seeing that miniature sun, even for that brief instant, put it all in perspective. It was a gigantic, round star...on the surface of our planet. 😳💀

    • @Youcannotfalter
      @Youcannotfalter ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@Alachia I think he focused into those shots was because it was a smaller practical discharge and obviously not an A -bomb going off, zooming into it and slowing the shot made it look like a larger mass to fit the cinema screen it also had more clarity of interest. Larger explosions are slower while smaller explosions are not. I enjoy the in screen execution so all the actors see the explosion, that was partly the point of it. It was real flames and that will always trump fake ones to me.

The nuclear explosion did not look like a nuclear explosion. I agree with Alachia Queen, Nolan should of thrown in some CGI to show the mind boggling power of a nuclear explosion. Great review.
my interpretation of the color vs B&W tends to be a bit different, because the color segments are represented to me as Oppenheimer's continuous lifetime events, the B&W segments are the highlights of Oppenheimer's demise & fall - but then there is the additional layer of Oppenheimer's visions, reacting emotions & conscious mind - even kitty's vision of betrayal, etc. which is the most impactful, meaningful & explicit in describing Oppenheimer's life.
I do agree that such film should be watched with some intimacy, because you really need to be fully invested & concentrated to capture all the details (I was truly bothered by folks next to me constantly going out for a break, restroom break, buying drinks, etc)

Love your channel. I do disagree about the theater experience. Also, I do think the immersive quality of the IMAX make it worth seeing, but maybe that’s the filmmaker in me. I hate watching movies at home, I feel like it’s supposed to be a shared experience, like dreaming together with open eyes. I saw this in 70mm IMAX and it was amazing! I think I was skeptical going in because I wasn’t a fan of Dunkirk (which I also saw in 70mm IMAX), and that infamous sound mix. This one worked much better for me because the sound mix was made for that auditorium, and the dialogue was audible and clear. I liked that it was an epic about human drama and politics in a similar vain to films like JFK, which one might have argued would never be made again because of changing tastes. It was nice to see a blockbuster be exciting simply because of its history and relevancy to the horrors of “the bomb” that forever haunts
our collective future. Also, I’m so proud of audiences for being engaged in something that isn’t zip zap boom. It’s good to know that audiences still have the attention span and thirst for something like this. I want more!

Nolan's cinematographer said that the Imax 70 mm has a resolution of 16K. Digital movies have a resolution of 4K to 6K (haven't heard of an actual non-documentary shot in 8K). Nolan did not want to do CGI at 4K in between 70 mm IMAX scenes because it would fuzzy compared to what came before and followed after. Your comment about Florence Pugh’s breasts got me thinking about the scene where we first hear Cillian Murphy uttering the famous quote from the Bhagavad Gita: “Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds”. I found it bizarre that Nolan chose that moment - with a close-up of Pugh’s breasts - to have Murphy deliver the line, but recall that immediately before this they are talking about Freud (and Jung). Could this be a deliberate juxtaposition of Eros and Thanatos on the screen? I know this would somewhat trivialise these drives, especially Eros (which incorporates much more than just sex, of course, being the life instinct), but it would at least make some sense of the timing of this most famous Oppenheimer quote. Just a thought. 🧐

I love your analysis but sadly I do not believe that much thought actually went into that scene. I think he wanted to create an intimate connection between the two but also wanted to show that Oppy knew Sanskrit. It was a very bizarre way to insert that most famous quote...

I feel like a lot of movies that are released today are movies we can watch at home. For some reason the theater experience is not what it used to be. A lot of times lately I feel like when I watch a movie in the theater it's like watching a glorified Blu-ray on the big screen

    • @Alachia
      @Alachia  ปีที่แล้ว +3

I heard that was a good film. I need to watch it. Yeah, this film was definitely falsely advertised. It is a political drama that mostly deals with the interrogations of Lewis Strauss and Oppenheimer with a bit of montage regarding the Manhattan Project. The gravity of the creation of the atomic bomb is sometimes used as a tension point to rile Oppenheimer during his clearance renewal hearing but in no way was that the central focus of the film.
this was a great chance to finally have great story telling be done about the science behind the bomb and the choice to ultimately drop them. but nope.. it's just a well done courtroom drama instead.

So refreshing to see a review not blinded by the IMAX and general hype for the movie. 👍🏼I saw it regularly, so cropped. The framing worked fine. Heads were never cut off and I thought to myself do I really need to see the ceiling of the room here? Because after the big bang which I thought, like you said it, was lackluster I checked out. The building of the A-bomb and all that came with it felt like a sideplot of the movie. The craft of film making is on full display here. No doubt about it. But I just didn´t connect with the intersecting timelines and the is Oppi a commie or not plot, because Strauss had a beef with him. I didn´t care that much for it. Maybe a second watch will change it. But then I think about the running time and think, äh no. 🙈 Kudos for sticking to your opinion. 😍Even if watching movies on a phone is still a no go! 😉

I'm personally glad that the focus of the movie was not on "WOW BIG BOMB HUGE EXPLOSION WOW DIRECTED BY MICHAEL BAY WOW!" The focus of the film was much better spent on 1) The man Oppenheimer and his struggles, 2) Strauss and all that drama, 3) The actual emotional turmoil of the development of such a huge weapon and its (literal and figurative) fallout.
Also, please do not watch movies on your phone, don't do that, that's not okay, who does that, please don't do that.

for movie theatre experience, Tom Cruise is your man. I've been debating whether to watch Oppenheimer in theatres or wait to stream it. I'm thinking about theatres (but just regular not imax) since the movie got great reviews in general and I'm a fan of Nolan movies. The only thing holding me back from watching this movie in theatres was the subject matter of the movie (based on the trailer) didn't really appeal to me.

I am a bit surprised by the mass appeal of "Barbie"

Thank you for the thoughtful, thorough review. Although I was aware that Nolan had used only practical effects I didn’t think it extended to the actual nuclear blast. I thought they would have used some never before seen some found footage. I will be seeing it but I’m glad that I don’t have to wait for imax or 70mm. I am so looking forward to your review of Barbie. I don’t expect an uppercase/quotationmark/italics/ *film* but I do want a fun campy palate cleanser before I go see Oppenheimer and the absolute slog that’s going to be. I’m hoping for camp ala “Pricilla Queen of The desert” full of color and fabulousness and heart.

Nolan is Amish lite regarding his aversion to digital and CGI. I think it makes good sound bites (providing they aren’t buried in the mix like some of his dialogue)
however it’s probably going to underwhelm on depicting the intrinsic horror of nuclear blasts.

You voiced pretty every gripe I had with the movie. The movie was great, but still underwhelming at the same time. Saw it in IMAX and again on a smaller screen and honestly felt no fall off in my experience. IMAX was a complete waste for this type of story. And in certain cases (e.g. broken projectors, dirty reels, etc.), even an inferior experience overall.

For the first time in the years I have been following you I disagree 100% about the IMAX experience of this movie. It's the best IMAX movie so far I have seen and probably a top 10 best sound design. It made the impact greater and it elevated the script. I guarantee Oscars for the main 3 leads, Nolan and best movie.

Not to be a contrarian, but there are cinematic experiences you cannot have without the audience and the large screen. Off the top of my head:
    Rocky
    Jaws
    Star Wars
    Raiders of the Lost Ark
    and even
    Pulp Fiction
would not have been the same without the community experience of watching them with an audience.

Definitely agree that IMAX is not needed but a decent cinema is important because the score and SFX are great. It's too bad the cinemas in your area are sucky.
Not everyone is lucky to have a decent Home Theatre system, a small screen is not going to do justice to the actors because a lot of their micro-expressions are not going to be carried across. The intense expressions, the quivering of the corner of the mouth, the sorrow and guilt in the eyes. I'm lucky to be able to afford OLED TV with 5.1 sound with Full Tower speakers. Headphones and ipad? Neh...
The A-bomb is a letdown for sure. It doesn't look or feel like a nuclear explosion. It's very obviously a fuel/HE explosion. There was no shockwave that deflects the smoke trail (there was no smoke trail at all.) The simulation of the star explosion at the beginning of the movie was way better! If Nolan used that for the nuclear explosion, it could have fooled many.
I will go back because the story is really dense and I want to absorb more of the dialogue after I've had a chance to go thru Oppenhiemer's story online. It really got me thinking. Each scene had multi-layers like a truly good story.
The sex scene? Well really smart people have really weird fetishes you know...

Exactly. I didn't have a problem with her views on going to the cinema otherwise, I just can't believe she seriously thinks it would be the same experience on a phone with headphones on. Come on.

Great review! At last someone is honest! To me, Imax is like an amusement park ride, so not CGI'ing the explosion is a big mistake. This movie could have allowed people to intimately and safely experience a nuclear explosion in all its horrifying beauty. Instead Nolan shoots a dialog heavy 3 hour documentary. I don't have the bladder for that. Nolan f'd up. And the folks who invested in this need to hype the sh*t out of it before people figure it out.
