      And me, I thought exactly the same thing. I learnt more in less than 5 minutes here than the last wasteful 2 hours I’ve spent on TH-cam. 🤨

      This was so relatable especially for me as I have never been an avid reader since my childhood. I just started reading recently a year ago properly. Now I read regularly and the more I read the more I want to read. I am happy that it has become addictive. I try reading multiple genres to explore more, keep reading interesting and also helps to broaden your cultural as well as people perspective.

    For me the most important learning was to read whatever YOU enjoy. I have the feeling that nowadays people tend to think they have to read, what they think of as „smart books“ and especially things like self help books. And that is more than fine if you enjoy doing so, but if your reading starts to feel like a chore instead of something you actually enjoy it becomes counter productive. So just pick up whatever is enjoyable for you and have a good time, cause in the end (most of the time) reading is supposed to be fun :)

    Before the pandemic I had been reading fantasy novels for a bit before bed. I do a lot of stuff on my tablet, so I decided get some self help ebooks to while I had free time. Probably one of the best things I've done because I feel great after having finished the books I got. Indeed the stress goes away, I felt that when reading fantasy books, but it feels even better because I learned a lot of stuff from each book and put it to practice. I'm excited to continue reading about lots of different topics such as health, finances and business, but I still enjoy a fantasy novel the side!

      This is amazing to hear!
      I think there should be a balance. I had always wanted to read more fantasy books. Have only ever read "Ready player one" and part of Stories of your life.
      both types of books fuel different aspects of our self.
      happy to hear you got interest in Personal development. Not everyone will.

    never split the differnce and how to win friends are two great books.
    Deep work is something I'm looking at reading. Have listened to a couple of Cal Newports podcasts.
    I think books have only gotten me so far. I have to implement and adjust from there.

    I'm a guy who reads and writes comments. 20 yo now and I've never really read a book for my own interest. Many people say you'll be drawn in with just the right book... which book gave you the urge to continue reading? if there even was one.
    Atomic Habits was very nice as an audio book.

    One related question: What are your thoughts on reading fiction vs non-fiction?

    • @colinepps
      @colinepps  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think good fiction that has lessons and takeaways and makes you think can be really helpful. Same reason I advocate for watching good films. For me it helps get the creativity flowing as well. Thank you for the feedback as well 🙏

    The most regrettable thing is that reading is generally viewed as a boring activity, which is completely false. I personally consider that people who say that simply havent found the kind of book that is fitted for them. New beginners struggle to find their prefered genre or writing style or plot, and they have to explore a bit to reach the gold mine where reading is so good. For me it took a while, but once i felt connected with the book i felt like there is nothing more touching than good literature. Also, a really bad approach for new readers is picking really hard novels right off the bat(mostly classics but not only), that might ruin it for them. Many of the big classics are centered around discussions and debates, character development and analysis, things that can be boring if you are not used to them and cannot make the comparison between well built conflicts and characters and the bad ones. And in the same time, I hate the attention that self-developments books get, because they tend to give advice, but advice has to be personalized to each person in order for it to work, and also, many authors tend to profit off of it and write 300 pages of filler content that contains like 5% actual useful stuff and then markets it as a huge case study of human psychology and ways of improving the quality of life etc. And its not that self-development books per se cannot be good, but generally they are scams and I believe that a good fiction book can do the same stuff but better, because it can also come with a story that captivates, with characters to relate to and analysis that you can apply in the real life. And i really find it a bit depressing that many teen boys especially consider themselves avid readers or only view reading in general through the lenses of this scam of a genre, or even worse, try getting into reading through self-help books that usually disappoint and, consequently, stop some of the people from reading further.

    • @colinepps
      @colinepps  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yea I completely agree. My shelf is full of fiction and historical books especially because I think they do have really good lessons. I don’t advocate people painfully make their way through a self improvement book they hate, if a chapter or an entire book sucks, put it back. Simple as that.

    Bro i am 29 i was out of work for 4 years due to personal reasons taking care of my mother she was not well yet working fortunately she has retired now so how can i start my job search process which points would work in my favour like direct cold call or cold email or posting resume or messaging on LinkedIn ? Also does being very honest direct help me in this case should i first talk about it before they coming to know ? Are there any good books on this subject to know more ...

    • @colinepps
      @colinepps  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is a little out of my experience, but picking up How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie would be fantastic for helping you land a job. Using those principles and just being aggressive in your search, using tools like LinkedIn and Instagram can help as well. You definitely need to be clear about what happened during those 4 years but despite the setback, you’ll need some hustle to get back on your feet quickly. Again, not something I have too much experience with, but I hope this helps! Good luck my friend, keep my updated.
