Chung Suns was the best market Colusa ever had, they always had good deals on fresh produce and meats. The theater that you passed shut down about 2018 same guy who won that actually on the bowling alley on the back street of the original main Street. Unfortunately he couldn't afford to keep both businesses and so he sold the movie theater which was one of our only forms of entertainment in Colusa. If you pause at 8:20 the gray 2 story building that you were looking at was actually the town's gentleman's club back in the day. Pause at 8:05 and look between the stop sign and the end of the building on the block you're currently on the building with those big bay windows, that was actually a Sears and roebuck decades ago nad the owners of that place from like 5 years ago actually threw out a bunch of the old mannequins and catalos that had been on the second story that had been left over from the store. Also the China district is also well known haunted location that used to be part of the Colusa haunted house tours.
SEA HORSES: Chinese cultures believed that the seahorse was a type of sea dragon, and as such they were revered for their power and thought to be symbols of good luck. Sailors have long viewed the seahorse as a good luck charm too. go to 4:42 see the sea horses
I had to search to find the answer.... your videos are very interesting. maybe one of these days, find a few local Chinese folks to give you an inside interview
I grew up in Colusa and know that Main Street area pretty well. My mom had a flower shop on main street in that brick building you walked by early in the video. In the basement, you could see the holes in the brickwork where slats were inserted in to the walls for bunks. Indeed, there is a tunnel network under main and market streets connecting a lot of the buildings together, but it has been sealed up. The state park next to the river used to be the town dump, and as kids we used to dig around in the levee and find old bottles and things. And you got to meet Patti H! The nicest gal in Colusa.
Just subscribed bro, I’m Mexican American but growing up in Stockton California (one of the most diverse cities in America) I grew up up with a lot of Asian friends. I enjoy learning about the different cultures of Asia and Asian American.
Thanks for the support! TBH after embarking on these Chinatown history adventures there are a lot of similarities between Mexicans and Chinese. It's also interesting that California was part of Mexico too
@@jacks_off_to Very true. During WWII in Stockton, the city held one of the biggest Japanese Internment Camps in the nation. But to my knowledge they not only threw Japanese Americans into these camps they also threw other Asian Americans as well. The location that the camps were held it is now the San Joaquin County Fairgrounds here in Stockton.
@@Mudvillereacts That's new knowledge to me, since I've always read the "relocation" camps were in desolate areas like Manzanar, Heart Mountain, etc. There used to be a Japantown down in Lodi too, not far from Stockton
I think the building occupants were there not too long ago. On the door inscriptions, the traditional character 進 was written in simplified form 进, but simplified characters were not adopted by the PRC until the mid 20th century. Just a thought. Your videos are fantastic. New subscriber.
I own one of the buildings 745 main st. Its an airbnb. The original Chinatown was across the street under where the levee is now. The buildings were wood and were removed to put the levee in.
@@jacks_off_to Also wanted to say GOOD SHIT on your canto! Our younger generation is forgetting the language. I grew up in a SRO in chinatown and so much have changed there. Keep doing your thing!
Before Covid, there were buses that go to Colusa Casino... from SF< Oakland, Napa etc.. That casino also have a hotel. Maybe bring a bicycle, so you can go to the town from the casino. The casino has a huge bingo following...but I don't know why I never win there
I live in Western Pa my whole life and i love it but the winter is unbearable. I love looking at parts of California that looks like home...need to get there for 6 months 😂
@@jacks_off_to The store shut down after the last generation didn't want to work there like prior generations. The 3 brothers porky, Lee and roy with sole ownership at that point we're either in their 60s or older and we're too tired to keep working.

Yeah I was told it was temporary camp, that held around 5 thousand people.

Interesting 😊
just to let you know that the Old white build is a new building made to look old. it is less than 20 years old
Deceiving!!!
Chung Sun Market closed after more than 100 years in business in July 2014.
I really wanted to check it out after seeing it!!
