I tend to go towards quirky oddball races. Shirren might just fit the groove nicely. I mean how can you not love the adorable cockroach faced guy in the corner, clicking his mandibles and telling you about the wonders of Phrasma?

I may be the weird one out, but I'm choosing to play one in my group's upcoming game not because of mechanics. But, their outlook. Their story. It all matches so well with my chosen class (Star Shaman Mystic). Really, even though I'm acutely terrible at role-playing my characters in conversations and dialogue, (basically, I'm too shy to speak up a lot of times), I still like to have an interesting character in my head when making decisions for that character. And this just looks awesome for that.
At first when I got my character keskodai or whatever his name is I thought . " I'm some ugly bug great " , but these bug guys have an overpowered thing called communalism meaning they get to roll twice and take the better roll once per day. It saved me on many occasions when we where stranded on a planet making tents repeatedly for survival on a stormy planet with nearly nonstop bad weather.
I don't know why but I really like the Shirren, they just seem like a cool race to me, both in effectiveness with there racial abilities and just there lore in general.
I wasn't opposed to starship trooper bugs. But I am surprised I'm actually leaning towards playing them as my first race. They seem really fun! Hence me finding this video.
I want to create a Shirren Mechanic modeled after the "Mi-Go" race from the Cthulhu Mythos, continuously replacing his natural body with cybernetics until he's practically unrecognizable.
I've gotten into running 4 Starfinder games a week, and I have to say that the Shirren are my personal favorite races when I can play. Of course, the Character Operations Manual (2019 release) adds a LOT to races, classes, and themes. I'd love to see future videos involved the newer books, especially given they still have new books coming! Galactic Magic next month!
I plan on playing a Shirren Technomancer (Scholar theme) in an upcoming Starfinder game I'm being a part of. It should be fun! This race does seem to have a lot of benefits.
Just started playing a shirren Envoy (outlaw theme). I thought the combination might be a challenge, but the first session turned out quite well. Roleplaying an intimidation sequence was a lot of fun (playing off the appearance aspect of the race), and the very social emphasis for the character is a big departure for me in an action-oriented game. Thanks for your advice in this video series, I think it helped me build a more effective character than I probably would have otherwise.
We're on hiatus -- I think I eventually boosted his charisma to 24 or so with ability gems. And he switched classes after dying -- long story. All in all not the most effective character I've played. But interesting. . .
I think that communalism is not a reroll. It seems to me that you would decide, before rolling, that you want to roll twice and take the best result. Like a luck domain ability in Pathfinder. And thanks for all the videos, this is great!

I have a question. Under the naming section on Shirren, they mention that they prefer to speak using telepathy and reserve mandible speech to formal events. For some reason my brain is making me think that means they can't physically speak other languages well out loud. Do you think this is true? This coupled with the minor telepathy feat being nearly impossible to use on more than one person at once could make it difficult to talk to groups of people effectively. I'm trying to make a Shirren Envoy, so I wanted to get other opinions on this.
Not at all! Shirren have their "soul names" which are complex thoughts and feelings that are communicated telepathically and they have "speech names" which are names they go by to communicate with other species. They also revel in being given nicknames and honorifics. I took my Shirren to the logical extreme and gave them a ton of names and titles to emphasize their love of choice in their name constantly changing and evolving like their soul name would.
I've decided to make a Shirren mechanic with an 17 in Con (after racial bonuses) and the Gladiator history giving a +1 to Con, turning it up to an 18. Have I made a mistake?
Man, I'm excited for the Shirren. Want to play one name Ned. He has a limp because when he was a kid he broke his leg when he was chased by his brother and his friends. (...waits for the pun to be discovered.)
I'm going to attempt being a Shirren Envoy Icon. I love the idea of being an insect rock star battling his addiction to choice and spice milange. Chaotic neautal as they areimpulsive. I'm thinking I'd take a hit to charisma anyway as many famous musicians can be both charming and abrasive. I get in a scandal for carrying my shopping with my mating arms and itbeing snapped by the papparazi; its all over the holonet so I'm hiding out from the limelight. Should be fun . I woulder if I should call myself Ed?
Going for any Envoy Shurren built. The charisma is something to be somewhat concerned about, but the utility and ability to be the face is too tempting. I love their racial traits, and can't wait until my game starts.
couldn't you also just put the full 10 points into charisma to get the max of 18? you don't get to modify your other stats, but you can still have charisma covered.
At first I was like... why insects... but after seeing what Paizo did with them, I have totally changed my mind. The shirren are pretty cool I think. Definitely going to play one when i get the chance.

Look up the Courtier Shirren from the Character Operations Manual. It's a variety that gives a +2 to Charisma. Would work for an Envoy
