Is using small gauss only to free up the 2 medium slots for flak or is there some other benefit that I'm missing?

Being able to hit a heart with all 4 gauss cannons, less PD draw, which allows you to exert and kill that heart with pips at 4-0-2, less heat.
And damage difference is insignificant. Small gauss deals 0.75% damage of medium gauss to Medusa.
