  • Here's some fun for you! Emi & I thought it was time to launch a new Re-Purposing series. This time, I convert an old General Radio 1390B Random noise generator into a cool Push pull 6AQ5 tube amplifier. As a special feature, Emi shot the scrapping portion of the video. I was out in the other room sipping wine. I had no idea of what she shot. I left it as is, since it was so natural. I loved her take on the task. Part two will consist of the wiring and initial testing. I will cover the power supply section first, then complete the amp circuit. When complete, I will post an updated schematic, since I am certain that there will be some component updates. I love doing these demos, especially when I am accompanied by my sweet grand daughter. She really generates rays of light in the shop. I hope you enjoy.

Emi is a grand young lady!! she's funny! and intelligent to boot! cheers!!!! PS... Have Emi sign the amp , it may be a classic amp and will be worth more if the tech signs it!

Now I wanna see an entire D-lab episode with only her on camera, obviously supervised by the old geezer off camera. That'd be a good opportunity to teach her rule number one of safety in any shop: no loose or dangling hair, clothing or jewelry. yeah....need about twice 160dcv...a voltage doubler would have gotten the DCV B+ but then the DC B+ MA would prob drop by 1/2. Not just a good deal economically if you need to buy 2 new TXs tho.

Perhaps he didn't want or need the higher voltage of the full secondary? That's a 400vac CT secondary. A capacitor input filter with a bridge rectifier would give several hundred volts to the 6AQ5s & their Max Plate Voltage rating is oly 275v.
