How to perform a point based alignment in Agisoft Metashape for turntable photogrammetry

  • In this tutorial, I walk through the steps of how to perform a point based alignment of two separate chunks in Agisoft Metashape. After aligning two chucks the user can then merge the two chucks to get a single complete model of the object photocaptured. As part of the tutorial, I also show how to use the model to actually mask the photos, masking away the turntable and anything that may be in the background of the photos.
    A link to the marker palettes shown in the video is provided below:

    This tutorial is golden. Eventhough I did several objects with great success, shot in chunks, and now I feel really confident, I would just watch it for pleasure as I am doing right now, thanks again Alex!

    I just watched this again and not sure how I missed that Gradual Selection trick, but man is that helpful!
    I thought I would share a trick I discovered that you could do to fix misalignment after the merge if you're having trouble getting them scaled properly...I had this issue with the bottom of a shoe where it was noticeable bigger than the other. I actually ran the Optimize Camera's and then afterwards I re-aligned the photos for the merged chunk....not sure why that worked but it did, and it fixed the issue. I'm sure that simply making sure that both sets are taken from the same distance away for all the images ahead of time would probably prevent issues like this too begin with. I'm just theorizing. I bought a cheap laser measuring tool to help with that for next time.

    hi, thanks for this great video. I am following exactly same steps but my chunks are not at all aligning. What could be the issue. individual models in each chunk are visible, masks are also created but chunks are not aligning. Can you throw some light on this matter ? Would be really helpful.

    • @alexelvisbadillo
      @alexelvisbadillo  ปีที่แล้ว

      The issue might be with the photocapture. You can try a marker based alignment, but if that doesn't work you may need to adjust your turntable setup. You should try and photocapture as much of the object as possible from all angles. Make sure that after you flip the object, you capture a good amount of overlap that will align the two chunks.

    Nice video! Simple questions: 1. Both turntable prints can be the same or you need to swap for bottom / top photos? 2. What camera are you using? I have two canons with several lenses, but Im worried with blur for fov. (I know, need better lighting to close lens). 3. Can I crop png for turntable and print in normal A4 printer?

    Thank you, Alex, for another incredible tutorial. It was truly helpful because I spent the last two days trying to process an object capture with macro photos in two chunks and several loops, needing to use the mask. I wasn't succeeding with Reality Capture (a software I really like but in this case Metashape rocked for me). This tutorial saved me from having nothing processed to present at work! Now I have much more confidence in my workflow thanks to your excellent teaching skills. Gracias!

    With what accuracy do you need to position the object from different angles (for example, from below and above)? I repeated your tutorial on my model: I ended up with the bottom model being photographed head left and the top head right, and the blocks didn't line up (the head merged with the tail).
    Thanks a lot!!!

    • @alexelvisbadillo
      @alexelvisbadillo  ปีที่แล้ว

      It shouldn't matter which way the object is facing as long as you have flipped the object. What matters is ensuring that there is enough overlap in the photos between the two chunks. If the point based method doesn't work, I would try a marker based alignment. I have a video for that too :)

    This is a great tutorial, even though I'm working with UAV (drone) photogrammetry rather than 3D models, this is still probably the best explanation for aligning chunks that I've come across so far. Basically, I'm trying to align thermal images where the Ground Control targets are very difficult to see with an RGB ortho where the Ground Control is easy to see.

    How are the equations when using turntable and fixed camera? Is there a resource that explains the equations for the fixed camera and the rotating object?

      I'm not sure. You may want to try consulting the Agisoft Metashape Manual, or ask this question on the Agisoft discussion boards.

    Thanks for this helpful video! I tried to print out the markers but they seem way over sized. If I were to print at 100% they are way too big. even 50% is too large based on the measurements you give.

    • @alexelvisbadillo
      @alexelvisbadillo  ปีที่แล้ว

      Did you try to print the marker palettes that I provide on my website? If so, you should have success on a large format printer, printing at 100%. If you are talking about the marker from the Agisoft Metashape software, you will likely need to resize in a third party software. I do this in Adobe Illustrator.

    Great video thanks, I'll try that pattern method.
    I did somehow get two chunks aligned though and the strange thing is when I merge the dense clouds only one of them is there....I'm not sure why.
    I've seen this happen on several occasions where they are aligned but when I merge them one is left out.

    • @alexelvisbadillo
      @alexelvisbadillo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I usually do the masking inside RealityCapture Normal mode (resolution reduced 3times) -which is much faster
    and then I import all photos with mask into Agisoft and do the final part similarly as you do

    • @alexelvisbadillo
      @alexelvisbadillo  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends on the object. Nowadays, you don't need the dense cloud. But every once and a while I find a challenging object that I like to run a dense cloud on and then edit that before I run a mesh.

    • @alexelvisbadillo
      @alexelvisbadillo  ปีที่แล้ว

      Whether or not this will work is dependent on the photoset and at times the object being modeled. Sometimes adjusting the parameters in the alignment dialog can help, but often you might need to resort to using a marker-based alignment instead. I have a video for that as well.
