Written by Gilbert and Sullivan, Trial by Jury is a comic opera in one act and was first produced in 1875 at London’s Royalty Theatre. The story concerns a "breach of promise of marriage" lawsuit in which the judge and legal system are the objects of lighthearted satire.
Trial by Jury is arguably one of the most successful British one-act operettas of all time. Its success launched the famous series of 13 collaborative works between Gilbert and Sullivan, known as the Savoy Operas. After its original production, the opera has toured across the globe, and is frequently revived and recorded.
