  • In this week's episode of Is It Called Wine Time?!, Pete and Felix pop the cork on an incredibly rare bottle of 2017 Didier Dagueneau Pouilly-Fume Silex. Tune in to see our thoughts on this amazing producer, and very special wine.
We filmed this last year and right after we filmed the video a very smart customer swooped in buying the entire allocation. We've kept the video stashed away patiently waiting for the next release. A very special wine time.

A couple of thoughts. It's always nice to see people sharing their passion with wine. I think you both do a great job with being approachable & down-to-earth as you talk about a wine that is certainly worthy of being in the pantheon of great white wines of the world. The other cuvées you're missing that Louis-Benjamin has made are Clos du Cavaire & Asteroide. Asteroide is legitimately a unicorn, and I think the last time I saw a bottle for sale it was $2,000/bottle. If you've not had the wines made by Didier Dagueneau, I think that saying Louis-Benjamin's wines are "just as good, if not better" is a mistake. I'm assuming you have not had them based on your comment, "This is a wine I never thought we were going to get to share together."
I've probably only had a few cases of wines made by Didier...but I've never had one made by his son that was on that level of depth & complexity. I've only had 6 or 7 bottles made by Louis-Benjamin, they're excellent wines, and I think many would agree that Louis-Benjamin had very large shoes to fill...but I've not yet had a wine that he made that was better than his father's wines. They are excellent, but there are other producers in France that are making wines of a same quality for about $55 - $60/bottle and a lot easier to buy more than 1 or 2 bottles.
As for other Sauvignon Blancs that are on this level I would encourage you to seek out the Austrian wine Tement Grosse Lage STK Zieregg. It's the one wine I've had that immediately reminded me of the 2005 Pur Sang the first time that I tasted that wine. I cannot recommend the wines enough. They're also less expensive than the Dagueneau wines...but probably just as difficult to source or find.

If you guys are ever in or around San Francisco, California I have a number of vintages of the Silex, Pur Sang and Buisson Renard, and even a le Monte Damne in my shop.
