In a pinch - I've used paracord as a starter rope and haven't had to replace it yet, but now I think I have to double check my spring tension. Cheers!
@@philbodden4981 Not 100% sure but I think it was Sterling #550 Commercial 7-Strand Cord. I always go for Orange paracord since it matches my small engine equipment and I don't trip over it if I use it as a tie down. Got it from Sportsman Warehouse. Never had it fail on me but I also ensure knots are very tight, burn the ends and am not especially hard on them. Also - most of my usage is in the winter when they have a little less stretch.
Thank you for the video. I have a cub cadet snow blower with a frayed cord that needs replacing. The cord is somewhat thicker. Fortunately the blower has an electric start. Maybe I can fix the cord thanks to your video. Thank you also for continuing to do your videos as they are very informative and helpful.
Strength is a large factor here, but abrasion resistance might be just as important. I'd be curious to see how it performs against other cord types with a couple hundred pounds hanging from it, and some strong passes with a saw file or similar. My guess is it would be just fine, or even better than the rest. Also interesting that the first cord tested broke at the knot, not in the field. As I understand it, knots are generally the weakest point of a rope or cord.
Agreed. Although the strength test was impressive, I doubt many people break a rope because it's not strong enough. They break it because of wear. I would imagine this brand is good in that department too, but that wasn't demonstrated, so it's just a guess.

This tester is essentially a scale-up of the yarn-on-yarn abrasion tester used in the Cordage Institute yarn abrasion test.Three diamondcord™ pull cord specimens were tested until failure. Nice. I replaced the starting cords on some of the outboard motors I was working on. The handles I noticed were split on the stem end so I took a short piece of NICOP brake line, flared the ends and inserted into handle, inserted the cord and good to go.

That knot trick is pretty good, but I know another way to keep it from untying: just heat the knot until it softens a little. When it cools, it will be like a little rock. I use a lighter, but care must be taken to not set the cord afire.
I've been doing small engine repair for 30 plus years and I found the best way to make a knot. Loop it like a regular knot then loop it back through the opposite way then tie it. Pull it tight and heat it with a lighter or torch and it will never come undone. The problem I find with all broken cords, even the Diamond Rope or best ropes is the rubbing against the openings where the rope comes out of the recoil or on the mower rope guide. The rope runs and breaks in these areas. I probably do at least one or two a month on all equipment and the ropes all do the same. They wear through and break

Most of the time you don't use the cord to pick up your tool or equipment, it's used to start it. Also, it isn't only the tension that kills the cord, it's the friction going through the recoil starter's eyelet and through other eyelets as well. Take for example my Honda commercial lawn mower: The cord is incredibly thick but you can see it start to turn fuzzy due to the friction of it running through the recoil starter eyelet as well as the eyelet on the handlebar. The same applies to shoelaces, it's the friction.

You were talking about not doing customers anymore , just family and friends . I did a riding mower last year , it didn’t run . Told the owner it could be easy and it might need something bigger ( large parts ) told her I’ll get back what I find before fixing ! Ok fine she says . I found it needed a belt and battery . The price would be $260 which included a power wash , she said you keep the mower the price is beyond her wallet . I did the repairs and mowed several yards . Then I was offered $400 for the mower ! My yard is less then a 1/4 acre , front yard I can do in one swipe . 3 weeks after selling the mower she wants the mower back , after telling her it gone she had her nephew on me . Explained it in detail and showed him my emails , ok thanks I’ll explain it to her in detail . I sent him all the emails so he can show her what went down . I no longer am doing any repairs on anything, the state is trying to get everyone to be certified in repairs

Steve, I *wish* you'd put out this video a couple of months ago - I would have JUMPED on the purchase of Diamondcord! It took three attempts and three different rope types to finally get my Troy Bilt Cultivator/Edger recoil start repaired! However, it was a lesson learned, and I heartily suggest to *not* make shortcuts and try to "make do" when it comes to pull start cords. Hint: "paracord" is not a suitable substitute, even the *genuine* stuff. Thanks for the video, Steve!! 😃 👍 Edit to ADD: I found that abrasion resistance was a *MAJOR* factor in rope performance.

Nice that's it's USA made. But any time I break a boot lace or pull cord I replace it with military para cord. Great material, super tough. Never had it break on me.

I have used Diamond Cord on some of the machines i work on and it does a wonderful job, also have never had one break and that is saying something with some of these gorilla's yanking in a commercial environment. I bought a used non running snowblower last year as a backup. Fixed it up and got it running in the summer and put it away until winter. Winter came and I wanted to try the backup snowblower out so I pulled it out and first pull the rope broke. Ordering the Diamondcord now.
Thanks for dumbing it down for me. I’ve always had issues with getting the rope back on without the issue of it unwinding when trying to reinstall the apparatus. Question: how does one know when their recoil is set up for hand winding the rope on?
That smaller rope looks like what loggers call Spectra rope only it's smaller than what they use. I've got some of that rope but only 5 times bigger. That stuff is super strong.

wow. When starting equipment 10-20 times a day on mow days the rops take a beating. My 15hp walk behind 48inch mower goes through ropes one or two per season.....
So if I were to overtighten the spring when winding it up, well not me, but a guy i know who's definitely not me, how would you create some slack? Instead of the clockwise wrap around go counterclockwise?
Have a question about a cub cadet xt2 when raising the deck handle it stops at 3 1/2 inches and won’t go above that. The leaver setting goes above 4 inches any suggestions thank you .

After I had a sailboat, I always use a figure 8 stopper knot, it’s slightly bigger than the overhand knot, helps if the hole is on the large side.

Edit to ADD: I found that abrasion resistance was a *MAJOR* factor in rope performance.
The Stihl elasto start ropes are a little pricey but I haven't had one fail yet. For my lawnmowers I use paracord.

Great info Steve thank you from Chicago. I just wished I talked with you before ordering the three spools of the sizes I use most. 😱 I have used glue in the past but once I learned how to tie a secure knot I’ve not used glue since.
Nice that's it's USA made. But any time I break a boot lace or pull cord I replace it with military para cord. Great material, super tough. Never had it break on me.

I have used Diamond Cord on some of the machines i work on and it does a wonderful job, also have never had one break and that is saying something with some of these gorilla's yanking in a commercial environment. Tensile strength & good abrasion resistance, buy by the roll it is exceptionally more cost effective. Cheers.

I bought a used non running snowblower last year as a backup. Fixed it up and got it running in the summer and put it away until winter. Winter came and I wanted to try the backup snowblower out so I pulled it out and first pull the rope broke. Ordering the Diamondcord now.

That smaller rope looks like what loggers call Spectra rope only it's smaller than what they use. I've got some of that rope but only 5 times bigger. That stuff is super strong.

Funny thing Steve, but honest, I have not broken a single pull rope yet.....35-40 chainsaws in my small collection, and I've seen many others in my saw shack....but it is nice to know one has a good strong pull cord....

Hello, I recommend using our 2.8mm ( #3 ) for the smallest Stihl saws and use our 3.2mm ( #4 ) for medium to largest saws. Thanks for your interest and I'm happy to answer any further questions you may have:)

Hey Steve this rope looks great but I’m in Arizona and the sun destroys rope here especially on lawnmowers because a good portion is exposed to the sun. Do you know how this diamond rope will hold up in an Arizona summer heat and sun exposure??

So if I were to overtighten the spring when winding it up, well not me, but a guy i know who's definitely not me, how would you create some slack? Instead of the clockwise wrap around go counterclockwise?
Have a question about a cub cadet xt2 when raising the deck handle it stops at 3 1/2 inches and won’t go above that. The leaver setting goes above 4 inches any suggestions thank you .
