Hi Sarra! I've been watching your videos for over a year now--love love love and greatly appreciate them! And yes it's a new year. A fresh start so I'm determined to crawl out of my shell a bit more and get involved and start interacting with other indie writers. So after many MANY years, I've finally started working on an old manuscript that I pushed aside for a lot of reasons, but have always wanted to finish. I hope to turn it into a dynamic series because I think I have plenty to work with. We'll see. Love your new house, by the way and hope it all works out smoothly for you and your adorable family!

I retired last June from 20+ years of middle school English. I tried making myself write once I retired but I would just procrastinate. My friend started a co-working writing group on Zoom from 10am to noon Pacific time, Monday-Friday. This is sacred time. Nothing is allowed to interfere with this time. Not appointments. Not family. Not friends. Only super emergencies and vacations. Since August I have written almost 2 novels, submitted 5 short stories, plus a bunch of other writing stuff. I would never have been able to do this without this writing group and schedule. This works for me.

    • @eunicemagill4594
      @eunicemagill4594 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I want to add that when I didn't write solo and procrastinated I would be so hard on myself. I thought there was something wrong with me. I now know I need a writing group.

Me too! Having my kids learning from home for four months last year made me fit it in when I could. I've started to keep a running total of my words so I can see them build up, that way I'm happy about the total, not the amount I do each time.

It's definitely been harder to focus on writing. All I want to do is huddle up with my family in our little bubble. The December HB90 bootcamp really gave me a shot of energy, and I'm really enjoying the use of task blocks. It has helped to relieve me of some of the "I should be writing..." guilt.

  • @LyGamezz

Funny you call it binge writing, I always call it ‘when my tsunami hits.’ I look at my writing process as the ocean. There are days it’s calm no breeze at all. I can choose to peddle and make progress but I know it’s a waste of energy and time. So I wait, I wait for the waves to start, I wait for the dark clouds to form and then when the thunder begins and a massive tsunami forms I sit down and ride it for how long it takes 😁 also a tip, change that paradigm. I have heard so many times ‘you can’t do this’ when I was young that it formed me as person. So working on my paradigm is a massive project for me in 2022. I CAN DO THIS AND SO CAN YOU ❤️

Sarra, not sure if you saw a comment I made the other day. I was wishing I could go on a witchy, meditation retreat. Then I thought of bringing my laptop, of course, so I could write. THEN I thought OMG it would be so fun if Sarra did a witchy/meditation/writing retreat! Just what you need to do, add one more thing. 😆😆💫🥰

I'm currently working on an animated series pilot script of sorts, It's about a group of teens who find out that one of there high school teachers is selling super weapons on the black market for millions and they have to stop him and along the way they get super powers, I have been working on the idea for at least 3 to 5 years now, I did finish the first draft but that's when i was like 10 to 11 so yeah it was bad so I'm rewriting/redoing the entire script keeping only important elements

The stop trying to be the writer think you should be, instead be the writer you are is a tip that really, really resonated with me. This has been a problem for me for the past couple of years. Just before I got Covid and bronchitis at the end of December I decided to stop letting fear have the upper hand in my writing.
My work isn't perfect but I'm always taking workshops, watching videos, trying to improve my writing skills and techniques. I had forgotten how important it is for me to do other creative activities of crafting and sewing because it directly impacts my creativity as a writer.
Accepting and embracing my writerly quirkiness is something I've been working on. Thank you, Sarra for making these videos. I always learn something and am uplifted by your positive attitude and giving heart.

Great Video Sarra. I realised last year that I follow a seasonal pattern with writing and since accepting that this is how I am ove found life and writing much less stressful and pressured. Usually between January and March I write a lot, finishing 1, sometimes 2 books or plotting of one. April to June I mull over ideas for edits on those finished drafts, things I want to change etc but I don't actually change anything. I just make notes. Then July to Sept I don't touch any of it or often write anything. I read a lot, go outside with the family and just replenish my well. Oct to Dec I dip in and out of writing, editing, while still indulging. It's a 50/50 thing, a build up to Jan. Then I repeat. I hadn't even noticed I do this until I looked back over the years.

Novice here and loving your channel. My goal this year is to actually try and write something original and not just fanfic. It’s always a challenge to sit down and start because my mean inner dialogue says “you can’t write anything real,” but then I can go plunk out copious amounts of stories using someone else’s characters (which brings me tons of joy btw). I’m definitely a binge writer. I feel like those days I’m not writing I really am though. And when it comes to getting it down on the computer finally, my fingers can hardly keep up. I’ve started just writing notes down when ideas come so I don’t forget, but some days I just haven’t digested the thoughts fully and so I’m not ready to actually write. Love the tip about reading 🤓❤️👍

Based on my own experience as a "veteran" of several different writing groups and workshops, this video is a succinct summary of some of the best writing advice I've encountered. The confidence issue for me is most challenging when it comes to revising. I'm good at getting brainstorming and first drafts into notebooks but not as good at getting myself to revise into computer files. I'd love to see a video that specifically deals with this issue.

I binge write too, I try and sit and write each day, but over the last year that's not been possible and I've learned to squeeze it in when I can, and if the words flow, then that's fantastic! If not, then you don't feel too bad you've not got the words down and can do something else creative, like record TH-cam videos for my new channel!

I wrote my first essay yesterday - in over 15 years. Even getting used to MSWord was, odd. I handwrite/journal daily, but topical writing is something I used to do all the time, and then just - stopped. 5 pages came out of nowhere. It was such a good feeling, to express myself with structured sentences. I realised the entire time I was writing I was not 'musing' on the current state of the world.

Hi. Thanks for the tips! This year, I'm specifically working on being more organized for my author platform and small businesses. Love this. I have too felt the lack of creativity to write. It’s more like I get the urge to write. But then decide to do something else. I’m glad I’m not the only one who has felt this way. And I agree with the “getting new ideas” syndrome. And then getting writers block, because now everything has changed and I have to figure out how to smooth what I had out in order to fit in the new ideas. That sometimes works well with the original story and sometimes it completely messes things up. I tend to tell myself “okay, now you’re doing way to much. Just stick with what you had before.”

Q1 is my first time with HB90. I set my schedule, saved those writing blocks and then everything went down from there. Kids at home, husband at home. I do formatting and covers, and for weeks I had nothing. Suddenly I have several huge projects that take entire days. It's so frustrating. I can set boundaries and easily say no to everything else in my life, but when it comes to protecting my writing time, all this other stuff takes my attention and time away.

As always, solid advice. TY. I'm also a binge-writer. Sometimes I can work consistently, but I don't have a daily routine to write (at least not on an active project). I'm a lot like you in my process where I think through my book, turn it all over in my mind, & let it come to me in pieces. I jot down notes & write that stuff down, but I don't start actually writing until that lock clicks, like you said, & the story opens up to me.
This year, I hope to finish Book 4 in my Metaphysical Chronicles series, as well as finish some rewrites to Books 1 & 2 in the same series. And I'll continue work on my dark fantasy trilogy that I've been hammering away at for years. It's a stubborn story that isn't quite ready to be told fully yet. 😃

I loved your tips in this video. I'm still working on my plot but I'm just going to sit down and start writing what comes to my brain and see if that helps me with plotting my book. Also I'm going to be trying Word Sprints in the Heart Breathings community to get me going. I'm struggling with getting motivated and I would say it's my seasonal depression and lack of sun that is kicking my butt. But I have been trying to sit down everyday for at least 2 hours and take notes from TH-cam videos I've watched for plotting. I started reading "On Writing" by Stephen King A Memoir Of The Craft and I really like it so far. I think it would be awesome to do a Livestream Coffee Chat on here. Thank you for sharing Sarra. How interesting that you mention playing video games. We homeschool our two teenaged sons and one class we had them in last year was a gaming class taught by an English Lit major who had a philosophy of teaching kids storytelling through gaming. SO the entire time they were playing video games, he was subtly teaching them storytelling.

Excellent tips, thank you. I've been struggling through the last couple of years with my will to create, and though I think 2022 will likely still be an uphill battle at times, I'll keep watching your videos for inspiration.

Thank you so much for this. I've been having issues with getting started and stay going with writing. I feel like I don't have enough time but I've come to realize I do have time I'm just not using it wisely.
Filling the creative well is something I'm learning to do as well my challenging myself to read more.
    Congratulations on the 50k.👏👏❤

    Hi,
I'm a new subscriber and I love your videos. Thanks so much and congratulations on 50k subscribers.
So, I haven't actually written much this year yet because I'm editing my first novel. (I don't like the fact that I don't write so I'm thinking of starting another novel while I edit.) And oh, I love your XX idea, I just started using it and I must say, it's great. Makes things super easy. Thanks again!

I got COVID right after Christmas, and I'm still recovering. It's just dragging on and on and on. This has had a huge impact on my writing. I just feel so tired and drained. It's just frustrating because I have so many writing goals that I want to accomplish this year, but it's so hard to be in the right mental space when I've been feeling so bad. Hopefully, I can implement some of these tips to help me get on track

    Wow! 50K - that's awesome! Congratulations.
I'm hoping to write and self-publish two books, or at least one. Hoping for two. I'm going through self-doubt and comparison issues. My critique partners are awesome but I'm aware that they're writing is superior to mine because they've been writing for a lot longer. Then I think "how long will it take me to get as good as they are?" I'm not a spring chicken lol. Thank you for this video. I look forward to more vids about boosting confidence,

These are great tips that go beyond the stereotypical writing advice. Very helpful and very true to what I have experienced with my own creative blocks. Congratulations on 50k! I would love to see a celebratory Coffee Chat.

Congratulations girl! You deserve it and 50k is just the start! You put so much of yourself in your channel it is going to gain even more momentum and there is no limit! I had a dream that has just stuck with me. My writing is more geared toward self help, but this dream is definitely more of a twisted suspense story! Totally out of my wheelhouse so I am going to watch older video of yours for any additional help I can find!!!!! Gotta get it out- it's gripping, twisted, but gripping.
