The production quality here is better than shows with millions of dollars in their budget. Seriously fantastic work. These short videos give enough detail to get the jist of the repair while still being informative.

Would of loved having a mentor like this when I did my apprenticeship. I was used as cheap labour unfortunate
ly, didn't give me the confidence to continue as a mechanic. So I just drive trucks now.

I love turning wrenches, never did much diesel work though. We had friends that helped us with a lot of our diesel stuff as he also worked for my son’s oilfield consulting company. :) This is a great video because the mechanic explains things well and has a great sense of humor. I’m an old man now but if I were young I would definitely look into mechanic school. I did go to trade school in Whapeton and worked as an electrician for many years.

Decide if you want to work on equipment or trucks and find a dealer that invests in their employees. Some larger companies that buy hundreds of trucks a year do their own warranty work so they will likely pay for manufacturer training. United rentals and sunbelt do the same as they buy directly from the manufacturers.
If you want to do engine rebuilds, you’ll have to do some investigating. Most of the time, it’s cheaper to put a reman in. But not always. With the emissions technology, people will be more likely to want to rebuild than buy new, especially with trucks. But before you get to where he is in the video, you’ll be doing oil changes/suspension work/clutch jobs/undercarriages/tires. Prove yourself by doing that. Learn anything and everything.
Your absolute # 1 skill will be electrical diag. It starts with fixing lights, if a new bulb or fuse doesn’t fix it, you need to know where to trace next. Then you get into figuring out why the machine is derated because the DEF quality sensor is out of acceptable parameter even after putting a new sensor in.

Tech schools can be a great way to get learning and earn your way into an apprenticeship David. Once you're in the job many places have continued learning and manufacturer training to continue honing your skills. We are getting ready to launch our own NT University to our tech emplouees to take them from apprentice to master technician levels. This will include many hours of class learning, productivity tracking and rewards. If you are in the northern Kentucky area and have interest let us know. We appreciate your passion for working on machinery and our industry needs more hungry technicians ready to get out there learn and crush it at their jobs. Good luck on your journey friend.
