1917 (2019) was famous before anyone ever saw it. When it was learned that director Sam Mendes and cinematographer Roger Deakins captured 1917 in one shot, it became one of the most anticipated movies of the year. But how did Roger Deakins pull off shooting 1917 as one giant long take? That’s what this video essay aims to do - we’ll look at 1917 behind the scenes footage and Roger Deakins cinematography techniques, including why he used the ARRI Alexa Mini LF camera.
According to director Sam Mendes, for 1917 one shot was all he needed to create a gripping, real-time race against the clock. Roger Deakins was brought into the pre-production process early to work out camera rigs, storyboards, and just how to pull off a 1917 one shot movie. At least, that’s what it looks like. Even though the cuts are masterfully hidden, 1917 isn’t literally a one-shot movie but it certainly looks and feels like one.
As we look at 1917 behind the scenes, we’ll look at Roger Deakins' cinematography techniques that he and Sam Mendes used to create an immersive experience. Filmmakers are always trying to find ways to bring the audience completely into the film and that’s what the 1917 filmmakers accomplished. Long takes are just the beginning of the 1917 cinematography plan - they also chose to stick with prime lenses that match the focal length of the human eye. In other words, the camera behaves and captures the events as close to how we would experience it in person. It’s no wonder that Roger Deakins won the Oscar for Best Cinematography. In filmmaking and cinematography terms, 1917 is a one-of-a-kind cinematic experience that every filmmaker will be learning from for years to come.

"cinematography can create more than just a shot, it can create a world" great quote!
Thanks! We love our writers :)
Wonderful world!!!!!
Roger Deakins is God of cinematography.
Without a Doubt

Maybe not

The Night Window was the singularly best scene of the year imho. Props too to Thomas Newman on the score.
Absolutely! That moment when the flares are lighting the town in ruins is magical.
Perfectly crafted, and realistically makes sense as Deakins is so good at ensuring!
The cinematograpy of Blade Runner 2049 is mesmerising...especially in the opening scene and when Ryan's character goes on to find Deckard.
You know your cinematography is on point when they become the go-to thumbnails for video essays 😂
@@StudioBinder true that 👍
This film is a masterpiece and has some of the best music in film. I've watched it 5 times at the cinema (no joke)
No better place to watch pure cinema than the theaters!
Watching this movie in Imax will still be the highlight of my whole 2020. Unbelievable experience
One of the best experiences you could get in the theaters last year
Roger deakins is living legend artist cinematographer
We are lucky to have him working in cinema 👍
He truly deserved the Oscar this year.
Definitely, he keeps setting the standard for cinematography
I think he got it
6 minutes doesn't do roger justice :/
The man deserves his own documentary, we did what we could :)
@@StudioBinder amen on that! :) thanks for all your vids they are amazing!
I came out of this movie literally awestruck. Me and my other were screaming like kids discussing this movie. I watched this movie for Thomas Newman but became fan of Roger Deakins.😍😍😍
So many great artists working outside of the frame in this film ❤️
I used to think that cinematographer will go through a wide array of lenses for different types of scene/locations. Good to know that it isn't that complicated. 40mm on 99% of scenes sounds good to me.
Yup! Whatever works best for the story, regardless of whether it's complex or not
No country for old men was also his masterpiece
His work is more understated in that film but no less a masterclass
For me, Blade Runner 2049 is his definitive masterpiece
Roger Deakins is some one who understands cinema backwards. Also, he knows that cinematography is a different animal. It is grateful to be living in his times! Thank you sir!
the shot in which he runs across the trench makes me cry every single time I watch it. This is the most beautiful film that I have ever seen.
That shot is pure cinema 👌
I can't calculate the percentage of usefulness of ur channel Studio Binder, this is precious, thank u all 🙏🙏🙏
Happy to hear you'r enjoying our content!
Totally agree! Still wondering why there isn't even more people aware of those videos! They are pure gold.
He definitely is a visual psychiatrist. Painting pictures in the dark and moving the audience the way he wants them to. Legend❤👌
very eloquent way to describe his cinematography 👌
The way he photographed the remake of True Grit was breathtaking. True artistry right before our eyes.
Each film he works on is a masterclass in cinematography
@@StudioBinder I couldn't agree more.
1917 has many reasons why it's my favorite War Film of all time.
One, it has Roger Deakins on DP.
Two it has Sam Mendes behind the camera.
Three, the sound design is absolutely incredible. The explosions, rifles bring a level of insanity and chaos to war films.
Four, One Long Take !
Awesome work creating these videos
Incredible work out there! Thank you
Thank you!
In his every movie i see a different and unique style, which never allows me to divert attention,
Rogger deakins you are great.
Incredible visuals, but always serves the story 👍
@@StudioBinder true 👍
Well done StudioBinder, this does my #1 DP in the business justice!
1917 was my top film of 2019, an emotional and epic powerhouse that brought back the magic of going to the cinema to see what is truly film.
Another great video highlighting the importance of cinematography in the overall storytelling!
And what better guy to help us than Roger Deakins!
Possibly my favourite cinematographer
Little bit of a low blow when showing A Ghost Story as something to "doze off" on though, it was a wonderfully engaging movie for me.
It's a banger
I came here to write just this. Incredible film.
I knowww, meditation is different than sleeping
Came to the comments for this. The film was amazing, and I think the camera work was outstanding. Studio binder is actively tripping.
I dig movies I can fall asleep to. I think it only compliments the filmmaking as they are the 'shoegazing' films of cinema, where they become more meditative. Rather than commanding your senses to think in a linear direction, they encourage you to think broadly which can be much more relaxing and idea inducing.
Always loves your explanation ❤
was waiting for your videos since a week !!
new video every Monday!
I almost did not recognized your video on my feed, the THUMBNAIL needs a MORE DISTINGUISHABLE LOGO! GREAT video as always!

This is definitely one of Roger Deakins top five best works
This film is a great technical and artistic accomplishment!
Best channel on youtube! 🥰

Roger Deakins is the best in the business. To work with him is my dream.
I've abandoned my boy.
Auto generated subtitles: I've abandoned my phone.😂
We have work to do 😂
It is wonderful experience the movie 1917 superb cinematography ....
The visual medium at its best!
the night window scene is one of the most beautiful things that have ever happened to the cinema
i want to ask you four questions.
1.what is art film?
2.what is the difference between art film and entertaining film?
3.tell some movies which balanced art and entertainment?
4.tell some writers and directors who balanced art and entertainment in their films?
All films are technically art, it's more a matter of whether it's good or not. There's no two distinct types of film in the sense of art/entertainment, people just tend to think of some films as more popcorn flicks without complex subject matter and others that are more "deep." The films of Christopher Nolan and Quentin Tarantino are generally considered a great combination of both.
Awesome! Roger Deakins, Righteous, Deeper and Dynamic, by create a world in the Movie, he give him a Soul.
Definitely - cinematography can do more than just make a great shot, it can create a world 👌
Remember True Grit?🤩
First like..❤ Studio binder team.. You are amazing.. I am not into film making but its just very informative and entertaining at the same time
Glad to hear! Our videos are for filmmakers and film lovers alike
Absolutely adored this movie. But to be fair, there is a split in the middle when Schofield blacks out after getting shot at by the wounded German sniper. Without this cut, we couldn’t go from dusk to dawn in real time. So really, there are two continuous ‘shots’ in the film’s narrative. No matter, this is a true marvel of visual storytelling.
Thanks to u studio binder for showing all these ❤️❤️
Hope our content was helpful!
*The man who showed the cinematic world from his vission the legend of his job MR.DEAKINS*
Definitely, we are all lucky he's making films
@@StudioBinder thank you so much team studiobinder's
Honestly I think doing a one shot is one of the hardest and rarest things someone can do in cinematography but it adds so much ridiculous amounts of tension for the audience because their barely any cut scenes at all and the way how the movie shows it is the amount of tension never stops because of it without any much cut scenes and with clever techniques for transitions and cut scenes for taking a bit of break before it starts again I can tell you that cut scenes are one of the things that can really destroy the connection and tension for a split second and isn't as intensive as a single shot.
Fascinating!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Roger Deakins & emmanuel lubezki are best
Masters of their craft!
"But how do you plan a production like this?"
"I don't understand, Sir.."
I love cinematography so much!
🙏🙏🙏 Thank you StudioBinder

Editing is also another important tool as much as cinematography.
Very its underrated but look at movies like whiplash and Lalaland, Lawrence of Arabia etc. Its and integral part of feel making. Sometimes movies fall short due to bad editing.
It definitely is!
Even thinking about the film 1917 makes me fall in love again and again with the world cinema ✨
One of the best war movie i have watched..breathakngly beautifull
He is definitely the Goat of cinematography
One of the best to ever do it 👍

I feel so lucky i got to watch this film in the cinema
Roger Deakins ❤
Amazing how they managed one shot movie .
Hope Roger Deakins will live longer
We all do! He seems to be a healthy guy 😂
Roger Deakins is not just a God, but I think his name is like a synonym to the word cinematography, you hear the word cinematography then u associate him with it automatically... It like... Its an existing universal truth
Very rare for a cinematographer to reach this level of mainstream fame - but its well deserved!
Love from Bangladesh
Thanks for watching!
1917 was so amazing with it feeling like one shot
1917 is like Oppenheimer to me. While I didn't enjoy the plot, the cinematography, visuals and the experience as a whole is mesmerizing.
The movie also had an expanded aspect ratio of 1.90:1 in IMAX.
Hey, hey, hey! I loved the pie scene from A Ghost Story!
It's a great scene, the visual style is just so different from 1917 so it made for a cheeky joke
Agreed I don’t know what they mean. that long take of her on the floor eating the pie was one of the most intense shots I’d ever seen. It’s so simple and so weighty and you just sit wondering but understanding how long it’ll go on.
Please a video about all camera movements
do you mean camera movements? That's coming up eventually in our Shot List series!
@@StudioBinder sorry autotype 😑 okay waiting for it😍
@@StudioBinder please do also talk about how the camera movements creates an emotion, example like how a slow push in feels so powerful and like wise every other movements
Roger Deakins The Great!
He's film royalty at this point 😂
Wonderful world!!!
It's impossible to pinpoint his style because it's all about the story of the particular film, it's what he shares with his late great idol Connie Hall
He is all about serving the story, but inevitably reoccurring traits do appear across his filmography
Love this movie. Deakins' might have been on a whole different level with this one.
I once learned how to take a photo
Have you tried shooting video?
@@StudioBinder Well, I'm taking a class like that
I am from India . StudioBinder is doing great job for new film maker.
Thanks for watching! Great to hear our videos are working :)
The director usually thinks of the "how" something is portrayed on screen.
Yes, the director thinks of how he wants the film to look and its the cinematographer that figures out how to create that portrayal! Especially with Deakins it becomes much more of a collaborative effort - you can tell because of how much of Deakins' style and preferences show up in the film
@@StudioBinder Yeah, that's true. With 1917 you can just feel he had everything to do with it.

We want a video for camera sitting
What song is playing at the beginning of this video?
Does anyone knows what is that camera that Roger in the thumbnail is holding? I mean it doesnt look like a normal cinematic camera, what is that cam for?
I've been having the same question for some time. it almost looks like a viewfinder only, used just for framing
indeed I think it's called a director's viewfinder
Nice movie
legend
one of the best to ever do it 👌
StudioBinder ur channel is also the best
Which mm lens used in this movie ?
RD indeed a legend, Here another proof ♥️💟❤
We are lucky to have him working in our art
@@StudioBinder True that :)
How short films writing will help aspiring feature film writers ? Plz reply
It'll develop your writing skills by practice with multiple stories in a shorter amount of time. If you're also a director, the short film created can be expanded into a feature if the short acted as a successful proof of concept
@@StudioBinder thanks studiobinder ☺️☺️
I think studio binder will make the video on camera and their photage 😊😊😊😊😊
Do you mean recreating one of the scenes? 😮 That might be a little difficult haha
Magician with 📷
Can you do a breakdown the cinematography of kdramas?
Okay but how tf do you film in the dark like that without tons of grain? Wtf
With using single lens for capturing a single character, we might miss out the scale of the production, as there are nearly 300 to 500 men in few scenes. An establishment shot captures the intense of the battle then capturing only the single character alone in a frame. What's your view on this??
But I genuinely appreciate the effort to pull out this film!!
I think we get a sense of that while moving through each crowded area with the main characters. The trenches, the vehicle ride, etc. The tracking shot IS the establishing shot. And why we feel so immersed in the film.
Certainly we might miss out on maximizing the full scale of a battle without an extreme wide shot, but I think Mendes and Deakins carefully considered which moments they'll pull out to create wider shots. The best example is Schofield running across the battlefield; that's as breathtaking a shot as any ever made and part of the reason is because we're running with him but also see the scale of what's happening in the background.
@@StudioBinder Got it. Thanks. Could you consider my request and post a video on Montages/ Russian Montages? It would be a great help!!
