    Such good stuff. Please please please make these GDT episodes viewable again. Legitimately the best and most inspirational hiking content out there, sucks to think it may never be seen again. Much love brother ✌️

    You added them back 💚 some of, if not, the best hiking cinematography on TH-cam. Thank you, John. For being so noble.

    Wow, i looked for your old videos ever since you put them down. Thanks for making some available again. You are one of the most important humans in hiking in the last decade. Your style of vlogging is everywhere now. And i would dare to say that you did revolutionise the UL movement in a way or other too. Certainly, you have been my personal biggest inspiration and i wholeheartedly thank you for that!

      Thanks for the gear list. I'm interested in your prototype shelter. How are you getting 7.5 oz? Does that include stakes? I've been using a Hexamid Solo with netting since 2013, but am considering switching to a tarp only version (no netting) for 2018 when I resume my CT thru. Do you feel that you can get by without netting and just a headnet?

    Looking forward to the GDT episodes! Question: Are you using the 20mm lens for weight reasons? Being a 40mm equivalent in full frame it is almost at the lower end of a portrait lens. You have great footage to show for it. Yet, for just over an oz more (and admittedly a higher price tag) something like the 12mm f/2 olympus might be an interesting fast lens option for a m43 lens. It would almost double the field of view for those gorgeous landscapes and make it easier to depict man's smallness on that wonderous stage [less back tracking to get those shots]. I've used that particular olympus lens on some 10.000 trail miles and it has held up well. If you are interested in sample hiking footage, you can find some on my channel (eg. "Tag 4" of the 300km Western Alps loop - which is one of the few that has almost no German talking bits. The wide shots [video] were made with that lens - stills were done with the phone, I also log a 35-100mm around seen in some shots). I know you are serious about UL, but getting a ultra wide like the olympus and adding a second longer focal length lens, would give you great shooting flexibility: eg. for a second lens, since tele gets heavy: the 4 oz panasonic lumix g 42,5mm / f1,7 prime. Considering you chose the weight penalty of a system camera, and that you still do the GDT in an impressive 24 days, I'm sure it would take more than 4 oz to slow you down. :-) Happy trails!

      @Of_Hermits_and_Hogs 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      :-) If I close my eyes I can actually envision you giving this exact reply in a Q&A video in that super relaxed fashion of yours. Good on ya. Well, in case you are upgrading at any point, maybe have a look at an ultra wide lens like the olympus. It may be a nice asset for sharing your journeys - and thanks again for sharing them!

    John, you're the only person on TH-cam I find worth subscribing. Anyway, I'd like to hike the trail next year and so far the only worry are bears. It''s stupid, isn't it? Did you see any? How many of bears did you have to run from? I'm from Europe you know. Not many bears around

    • @JohnZahorian
      @JohnZahorian  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      woah thanks! i see bears all the time. know how to properly interact with them and over time you'll learn that they really aren't that scary since there's no reason for them to harm you.

    • @podzemnik
      @podzemnik 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It doesn't sound very calming but thanks for the answer anyway. I had a look on GDT website and just seeing number trail closures because of bears make me feel like going hiking to Iceland instead. Only birds there www.greatdividetrail.com/july-2016-trail-and-road-conditions/

    • @JohnZahorian
      @JohnZahorian  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ya and you can also look at the number of fatalities incurred while driving, but it doesn't stop us from driving. just the risks we take. there's a pretty comprehensive wikipedia page that lists all fatal bear attacks in North America. there have been 2 this year and there was one last year, and in the meantime there are ~ 30 000 car fatalities in the US every year. the fear of bears is not completely false, but is very overblown

    • @podzemnik
      @podzemnik 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I understand overblowing completely... At the same time, I've found these statistics a bit misleading because not everybody goes to the wilderness but everyone drives a car from time to time unlesss you're an eco hero moving on a bike 365 days a year (but even then it's more risky than being eaten by a bear haha). I know my fear it's irrational but it's more like being afraid of something unknown and it's hard to beat it. Well, I think I'll go for it anyway because what the life would be like if we don't face our fears, right? Cheers buddy, keep on doing an amazing job here. All the best from Montenegrin mountains
