    Toyota's 175 Acre Laboratory
    When I think of exciting Japanese companies, the three that come to mind are Sony, Softbank, and Toyota.
    All three have intriguing stories to tell, and Toyota's story is possibly the most compelling at the moment.
    Not only because it is the 10th largest company in the world by revenue, but also because it's a leader in an industry facing significant changes.
    The auto-industry is steadily shifting from petrol to electric and self-driving technology is progressing every year.
    And before the pandemic, the ride-sharing phenomenon was flourishing.
    Indeed, it's difficult to predict how much and how fast the auto-industry will change, but Toyota is not waiting for technology to leave it behind.
    In 2018 Toyota's president, Akio Toyoda told investors:
    "The automotive industry is now hurtling into an era of profound transformation, the likes of which come only once every 100 years," … "With even our rivals and the rules of competition also changing, a life-or-death battle has begun."
    End Quote.
    You see, Akio Toyoda believes that to survive in the long run, Toyota needs to shift focus from manufacturing to software development and other technologies.
    This is why Toyota spends an insane amount of money on research and development at almost $10 BILLION per year.
    To put that in perspective, if that money went to a government space program, it would be the 3rd largest space agency in the world!
    Anyway, the range of technologies that Toyota is developing is so broad that it is constructing a massive laboratory so it can test them in a real-world setting.
    The lab is a smart city that Toyota will build from scratch called Woven City.
    The name is based on the organic grid pattern of the city's streets, which we will cover in a minute.
    So, Woven City will be near Mt Fuji and will be roughly 100 km from Tokyo.
    It will be home to around 2,000 residents consisting of scientists, project partners, along with Toyota's employees, Toyota retirees, and their families.
    The city will be fully sustainable and powered by hydrogen fuel cells and solar power.
    It will be filled with many parks, including a large central park for recreation, as well as a central plaza for social gatherings designed to bring the community together.
    Its buildings and vehicles will be connected and will communicate with each other through data and sensors.
    And below ground will contain the infrastructure of the city, including hydrogen power storage, water filtration systems.
    The subsurface level will also have a network of autonomous delivery robots that will transport goods directly to buildings.
    All of the homes will be testing technologies, such as in-home robotics, to assist with various chores.
    And they will also be equipped with sensor-based AI to check occupants' health and provide other integrated services.
    And there will likely be many other technologies tested in Woven City that haven't been considered yet.
    You see, Toyota is inviting other companies, scientists, and researchers from around the world to utilize this one-of-kind living laboratory.
    As it stands now, the most exciting technology that will be tested is the e-Palette Concept Vehicle.
    The e-Palette is a fully autonomous electric vehicle that is customizable for a wide array of purposes.
    It comes in three sizes and its open design can be used for parcel delivery, ride-sharing, various retail shops, and even things like a mobile motel.
    So, the e-Palette vehicles will travel on the part of the woven grid pattern designed for the city.
    The grid consists of three types of paths and/or streets.
    The first type is park-like paths for pedestrians.
    The second is for personal mobility vehicles such as bikes and scooters.
    And the third type is for faster vehicles like the e-Palette vehicles.
    So, the three types will be interwoven throughout the city in such a way that it will help accelerate the testing of autonomous driving technology.
    And because of this, there will no human-operated vehicles allowed because only autonomous vehicles will be permitted.
    Toyota plans to begin construction early next year and to have the first residents by 2025.
    The vision behind Woven City is that it will always we a living laboratory, and it will continue to evolve as new technologies come out.
    So, if everything goes according to plan, Woven City will be a spectacle of immerging technologies and provide a glimpse of what the future might be like.

      I was thinking the same thing, if it fails, they can always turn it into an amusement park.
      If there's anyone that will succeed though, I think it will definitely be Toyota.
      Their vehicles are so reliable and for the most part indestructible.

    The complexities in designing, building, maintaining and managing buildings and cities are enormous. I believe that only Data / Software / AI and all things technology can assist us in making the daily and future existence of cities a possible and pleasant experience. Well Done Toyota and Woven City!

    Nightmare. Being totally owned by a company. I used to joke we will be living inside corporate shoping plazas instead of countries in the future, it seems its not a joke anymore. No matter how cool the graphic rendition looks like, its still a nightmare on dystopic levels. We moan about how intrusive governments are in our lives with all the surveillance and shit, imagine an unelected, unaccountable entity's scruples when it will come to meddling in their exploitee's lives who get dependent on them down to their retirement. Imagine being fired. Imagine spending the money they give you being basically given back through obligatory fees and "service costs", taxes will seem like a breeze compared to those. Now imagine, corporate thugs with corporate aims patrolling the city, making you comply with company policies. Mare of night!

      Woven City is a laboratory, a place to test technology. Surely the residents will be free to leave, and will largely be there pursuing their own self interests namely the research that they are involved with... The inhabitants will be scientists, lol.

    • @Hy-jg8ow
      @Hy-jg8ow 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@neoscribe2295 Scientists in "employment" with their families and dogs in toe. You explicitly said so in the video, that the city will house employees and retirees as well - and I assume shop sellers, toilet cleaners, street sweepers - or their robot equivalents, in any case mechanics and personnel too. That's more like a clan or mafia, rather than a college campus. Especially considering company internal "secrets" as is usual. In my opinion science behind corporate paywalls and corporate rights is way worse than state funded institutions. Even considering the pursuing of "self interests" - the latter which rather should coincide with public rather than private interests. But I digress. We already live in capitalist fairyland, no wonder the world is going to shit right before our eyes.
      And yeah, in that future scenario you might have the right to leave, but the only place to leave to will be another corporate compound. LOL indeed, but a tragi-comic lol.
      Technocrats never consider how the economic systems in the background change the face of technology, or maybe they do, but many of them are simultaneously capitalist cheerleaders.

      @neoscribe2295  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1)Whoever decides to live there will do so voluntarily, except the dogs. 2) Comparing a group of engineers and scientists, housekeepers and their dogs to the mafia is a bit of a stretch lol. 3) Capitalism has done more for the common class than any other ideology in history, pandemics will spread regardless of economic system.

      @@neoscribe2295 OK, I rest my case. I could go on an argue, but that would be useless. I like your videos nevertheless. My criticism is not malicious. I was referring to catastrophic climate change and exploitation of the third world and workers all around the world, not as much to the virus. Plus I wouldn't equate scientific and technological advancement with capitalism.

    How could something that is so inspiring be so disappointing at the exact same time??
    Why does Toyota think Hydrogen can simply be plucked out of the air (water) free for all to use? The fact is hydrogen is very hard to find (outside of a star) ... sure you can find it on earth its own but not in any quantity large enough to even talk about... Its most abundant form is of course combined with oxygen in the form of water and that's the rub it's very energy expensive to strip the elements that make up water.... and then to use it in a vehicle it needs to be compressed to a great degree otherwise the car won't go anywhere... so this compression takes even more energy.
    When you add up all of the energy used to first separate the elements and then the added energy used to compress the hydrogen its actually the least efficient way to power a city.... If I'm wrong please let me know.... I'm sure someone will..

    • @jeffsnow7547
      @jeffsnow7547 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed. Then add in the extra cost of storing that hydrogen safely in a place that's prone to large earthquakes.
