Alex Ledingham, Photo Artist of Grantown on Spey

As part of the RPS Historical Group's look at historical collections of photography, photographic archives, and those working historical and alternative processes Pete Moore's talk explores a small pioneering photographic business established in Grantown on Spey in Moray, in the Highlands of Scotland. Alex Ledingham's studio traded between c.1907 and 1954 and provides a valuable local social documentary capturing events and people in Strathspey. He also created a range of postcards, building on the Victorian tradition of tourism photography and servicing a string of small outlets. The talk showcases a variety of Ledingham's work, considers the influence of early tourism photography on his practice and describes recent efforts to bring his work to wider attention.
