The manual and the boat shop actually told me opposite to start it as i always have , cold start is choke on the up position , wait til it warms up for a minute than gradually pull choke down once warm, when motor is warm you can start choke in down position
Thank you skipper. Got a Merc 3.3 for my zodiac cadet. Going for a ride today. Got the zodiac as a punt to take my back and forth to my 25ft Cape Islander, but will have a lot of fun with the zodiac also. Honda 90 outboard on Cape that I putt around all day with for about 40 bucks. Happy boating.
@@skipperstan The island that I live on the east coast of Canada has an inland sea called the Arm of Gold. The tide is only 2 inches at most and it is a beautiful place for boating. Lots of fish and great scenery. Yes, lots of fun on the boats. This year I am navigating routes and costs in preparation to start a charter business next year. I love it here.
@@davidmccormick84 Sounds absolutely stunning, wish our tides were that small, some here are up to 20ft (Bristol Channel, UK). I haven't done any fishing yet, it is something I would like to get into though. ⚓
On all Mercury's with the red cord kill switch, all you need to do is press in on the kill switch and hold it with your finger to shut the motor. No reason to pull the cord.
I just purchased one similar to this one, 2001. It starts, first time buying an outboard to use with my dingy, anything you would recommend doing prior to taking it out on the bay? Similar to cars am sure they need some type of service, I don't want to take it out and something happens. I got my use one for 380, is that a good price?
Sounds like you got yourself a nice motor there, and 380 sounds like a decent price. There are a few things to do before taking it out in the bay. Always make sure you have fresh fuel with the correct mixture, don't chance old fuel even if it is only a few months old. Put the engine in a bucket of water and start it up, make sure the exhaust is submerged to keep it cool. Let the motor run for a while to ensure it doesn't develop any issues when warm. Also check that the water is coming out the spout, so you know the impeller is working and the engine won't overheat. Hope that helps and have fun!
The lanyard stops the kill switch button from being pushed in, hence the motor runs only when the lanyard is in place. The button is spring loaded and designed to stay in when the lanyard is not attached and the engine won't run for safety. It's not possible to push the button in, when the lanyard is attached.

You don’t have to pull off the lanyard to stop motor. Just simply push kill switch button in.
