I found an article which said that the old Lukmanier Pass road went via Mompe-Medel. When the new, much wider and metalled pass road was built, the villagers suddenly lived on a small, dead end road. They demanded acces to the new pass road, and so this narrow (relatively cheap) tunnel was constructed around 1970. It has been brought up to to the latest safety standards some 10 years ago.
The avalanche gallery at the beginning of the trip runs along a hydro-electric plant reservoir, and is being extended by 320 m/1050ft to ensure a year-round use of the Pass.

Looks like the building of the dam and powerline required a major update to the original road. At the top the road would have gone where the dam is now so the need for the snow / rock / rolling goat tunnels would be necessary, further down the retaining walls would indicate road widening, also new bridges and wider tunnels. There was one of the original stone bridges to the left at the start of the decent down the gorge and through the 'new' tunnels. Strange tunnel to Mompe had passing places in what was a quite a wide tunnel. Pity the extra few k Ch franc was not spent to make it wider all the way through as the alternate route looks steep and twisty on the map.

I thought it was quite a wild looking tunnel ( to Heide land) after all the new tunnels on the rest of the route.
