      In the 2000's Dave Mustaine did some guitar videos for Guitar World. Due to copyright issues he wasn't able to play his own riffs so had to do slight variations of them. This copyright shit is out of hand. Especially when and artist dies and their family who has nothing to do with their music starts trying to claim all the ownership for it for the $$$$$$.

      Dave worked out into his own rights. Even made a following of fans. Definitely gave Metallica something to compete with. Most people would’ve said they would have been on Metallica’s side, but when you have a single man playing against them, their might be a chance. He made his fortune and made his amends.

      It wasn't about money, it was about control over their property. One of their songs was leaked onto radio stations, before it was even mixed. The guys behind Metallica want to control when and how their music is released, as is their right. They give away some of their music on Spotify.
      It's people's choice if they want to give away free stuff or not, and people's choice if they want to release unfinished products or not.
      Napster brainwashed everyone into thinking it was about money, but no, it was about controlling your work.

    • @Christopher-md7tf
      @Christopher-md7tf 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Today's situation is totally different from the one 20 years ago. A small band like Gizzard makes almost nothing from people streaming their music anyway, so they might as well just give some of it away for free.
      Back before Napster came out, you actually had to BUY CDs to listen to the music you wanted, believe it or not. The way they brought across their message was very dumb and completely backfired, but Metallica were actually right. They, together with a few others, saw that people being able to download music for free on the internet would basically destroy the music industry as we all knew it.
      Fast forward to today where the music industry is still smaller in terms of revenue than it was in 1999 and bands have to beg for donations online or open up a Patreon to stay afloat if something like Covid keeps them from touring for a prolonged time, since touring and merch is where you make almost all of your money today because recorded music has been devalued to the point where people are willing to spend more money on frappuccinos every month than on music.

    When I saw this episode when I was still in middle school, I misunderstood this segment as if the writers wanted me to take the scene at face value and feel sorry for wealthy individuals.
    Then I understood later that organizations like the RIAA want you to believe that pirating Metallica’s music will make the band members go broke and live in cardboard boxes, and South Park sarcastically mimics this rhetoric by showing that even if piracy really does eat away a noticeable amount of revenue, these people are still filthy stinkin rich and rake in cash on a daily basis.
    I’m not in favor of pirating products, but South Park is right in showing that these big pop stars aren’t the “starving artists” they want you to think they’ll be if you pirate their works.

    Metallica is a hero for standing for other bands. Also, when their company of agents/employees gets screwed from these deals does that just get brushed under the rug? Oprah works not just to avoid boredom but there’s 100’s of jobs that pay $60k a year depending on her (yes, she’s awful). But trying to say “music can be stolen and no one REALLY gets hurt” is stupid and you will ultimately lose music options.
