John Adams is wonderful. Many years ago, while playing with the Youth Orchestra in Cleveland, he came out to conduct The Chairman Dances with us. He was warm and very friendly.
Absolutely. It would be wonderful, of course, it's a magical piece. But the accuracy and precision needed for it to come together would be maddening. I've played some Adams on the piano, it's like laying a 10 minute tongue twister for your fingers and that's probably easier than this.
This kind of piece had a massive impact on modern movie music, kind of like Stravinsky and Mahler had many years before. Stuff sounds like this because it's copying the approach (less well, usually).
John Adams evokes in his melodies an air of hope and a wonderful future.

I don’t know much about John Adams, but hasn’t he been dead for 200 years?

I love this version, slower than other recordings, beautiful!
23:37-24:20 is so satisfying. Arriving on that chord at 24:11 feels so good.
I think the whole work is beautiful!
Rite of Spring is in the air...
I like the point in the third movement where the notes converge into a continuous tone
Thanks a lot! Second part is so mysterious and peaceful at the same time. Tenderness
Accurate
i love you, John Adams

BAR FLY 1982 Mickey Rourke, Faye Dunaway
Barfly brought me here!
The recording may be 1982, but Adams wrote this in 1978.
The orchestral version is from 1982. The original version (from 1978) is for just 7 instruments.

11:10, 13:10, 13:45, 15:20
any string player, give it to me straight - would it drive you crazy to perform this ?

Y E S. I'm a violinist and honestly I can't practice this piece for more than 30 minutes, then I need a rest. It's diabolic
if it doesnt drive you crazy then why play it?
On the other hand, it's easy on harmonica - just keep inhaling and exhaling faster and faster - voila!
was this is a movie or something it sounds so fkn familiar
