“3rd down” is referring to passing packages. You will hear rbs be referred to as a 3rd down back if they are great route runners and have hands. Some even specifically for pass protection. Now to expand on this a “3 down back” is someone who can typically run all of the teams running packages, and has exceptional pass catching/blocking skills.

Couldn't the third down back also pertain to a 3rd and short situation like 3rd and 1 or 3rd and 2 where you'd want a power back in the game? You'd have your more versatile back in on first or second down if you're going to try a pitch screen ect.

He knows why they are called that he played football before he was wondering why his depth has parsons starting but then it automatically puts in the better pass catcher as 3rd down simple fix put your rb depth chart in order in power and 3rd down so it keeps the rb you want in till he is tired and needs a break

3rd down rb comes in during passing sets. So similar to how Danny Woodhead was used by San Diego

The third down back comes in on shotgun past formations with the running back basically set as if it’s an inside zone because typically those aren’t run plays those are more pass place for the running back or pass blocking

Papa 3DRB comes in for 3rd down formations mostly when the rb is lined up to the side of the qb
3rd down rbs come in on all “passing sets” (basically all the gun formations) and the power back always comes in heavy sets like the goal line and i-form. SubLB comes in as MLB on all nickel, dime, dollar, quarter formations
Papa 3rd down running back is for formations like gun bunch power back is for goal line type formations and hb1 is your general halfback
