Your Meshtastic was happily meshing with other nodes at the show and relaying messages for other users. This is a background process which uses your nodes transmitter and why you saw your battery was depleting so quickly without "You" yourself actually doing anything.
Even though I am in the UK, I always enjoy Gabe's videos whether they are sciency, techno geeky stuff, or updates about Sandlands. It's also nice to see his partner getting involved in some of the projects too. It's good to see the channel growing steadily, it definitely deserves more subscribers.
the booth was far busier than I expected. was fun meeting you. Also you'd be surprised the kinds of things TSA won't even take a second look at, I've traveled with various home made cyberdecks over the years and not single one they've been interested in but my old film cameras on the other hand... they always have to check those lol
Thank you for taking us to Open Source 2024. It was very impressive, with so many booths and projects; it was very interesting. The Airbnb is great. When I saw the sea, my first thought was to immediately set up the dipole and start operating on shortwave. You presented some of your most beautiful projects at Open Source 2024.
Great to see that your stand was very well received and also attended Gabe. Always interesting to see the wide variety of ‘nonsense’ you have on the channel and again great to see it continue to grow. Thank you for sharing this brilliant video with everyone. Best wishes to you, your family and the feline overlords
Looks like you had a good time. I hope this does become a regular event and it's great that a group of great creators can talk and realize they aren't operating in a vacuum. Would love to go but it's half way across the planet for me! Half of the exhibitor list looks like my subscription list (and the other half looks like I should subscribe to them!)
Glad this was a success for you and your channel! I started watching you when you motorized that trash kayak years ago through a forum post with 15 views. It has been a pleasure to see your channel slowly grow over the years. In an internet ecosystem where it often feels like originality and genuiness isn't rewarded, it's nice to see someone like yourself succeed. I hope you keep at it!
Glad you guys had fun! Great work scanning the hall 😂 That was cool! Thanks for the report 😎🏴☠️ Oh! If you’re ever in Shelbyville, IN for… some reason, check out their Cow Palace. It’s a bit smaller (a restaurant), but the pork loin sandwich and malts are great! 😜🍷
Wish I could have gone. I grew up not far from there. The last time I was at the Cow Palace was to see Lynyrd Skynyrd on New Year 1989/1990. It was used for large music shows fairly often back in the 1970s and 1980s. It also got used for a lot of sports/RV shows and boat shows where they would bring in and rig up a bunch of sailboats in the main hall.
1:50 I've been there. Taken a homemade computer on the plane and then decided "Well I guess I'm in the air so I should mess with it for 10 minutes and maybe get a shot of that" but then after a bit I just pack it back up and look out the window. haha There's something funny about that long moment of waiting on an airplane, especially if you brought something fun that is really awkward in that cramped situation.
Looked like a lot of fun and inspirational indeeed! I epsecially like how it's not about being the best at something, just "This is my stuff". I also appreciate the ending. That sunset with lapping waves wasn't long but long enough to have a calming effect.
I had to fly cross country earlier this year for work and carried on a ribbon splicer and a core splicer and an otdr and two different light meters and a spectrum analyzer and a bunch of other stuff that TSA doesn't allow to be checked, all fit into two pelican cases. They didn't give a crap about any of it!
Rumor has it you traveled by Tuggy down the Atlantic coast, across the gulf, through the Panama Canal and up the Pacific coastline with your landing being at the beach you showed at the end of the video.
Looks like you had a blast, Gabe. I have it on my list--perhaps next year. Depending on where it is. I'll note that at 12GHz, you'll see a fair amount of black-body radiation from warm buildings, etc. Easily able to see that with even a cheap consumer LNBF. So you're seeing actual microwave emissions made by human technology, over-laid on top of the black-body background.
I really wish i had gotten time ro stop by your booth, but exhibiting kinda means most booths you have to do a cursory glance as you run by lol. Maybe next year ill get more helpers so i can look around more
There were lots of booths I wanted to visit but only gave a brief glance as well! And plenty of booths I missed completely because I was distracted by something else.
bad part is that such events are only really accessible to people who live near it; I would have loved to have gone there but I live on the other side of the planet and I've never heard of such events happening in Europe
Good!! You needed this vacation You have been pumping out great content since January and you need to enjoy the summer to I hope you had time to relax and that Open Sauce was not too stressful Ps can we get a update on the Sand Land Tunnels? Thanks!!!
I'll try to do some more Sandland content, it's always interesting juggling different topics! Some people want more boats, others want more satellites, I kind of just do what I have time and attention for at the moment :-)
@@saveitforparts thank you anyway you're dedication and optimism is sadly very rare to find nowadays but I hope you just keep chugging along 😁 Plus I can't for the next video 😃 have a great day
Jeff Geerling mentioned you in his video and showed your project in his video. He's also into technology and wireless communication. He's also space orientated. Although, I really like your show, it's a huge miss to not give the shout out back in this video. This doesn't mean that I don't like your videos. I don't know him personally, neither that I don't know you, but I think that the both of you are a good TH-cam match to work together, or shout out to each other like wolverine vs magneto.
It was cool that he stopped by our booth! And you're right, I should have mentioned him stopping by, we had a couple people come by and I wasn't good at getting photos or signatures!
I have a couple ways to do that, this scanner will actually do 5x higher resolution (5 pixels per degree instead of one). However, the motors aren't super accurate and it drifts off target, I think it's even getting worse the more I use the thing! I tried doing a high-resolution scan at Open Sauce and it came out looking like garbage, so I gave up. Some of my other antennas use better motors and can give me higher-resolution outputs.
Does your tdeck actually die? Or is it just frozen? I've had it last for days on a 3000mah battery, but sometimes it'll be unresponsive even when it's plugged in and I have to turn it off and back on. I feel like that firmware might be a little hacky.
It seems like it lost power after about 10min, wouldn't light up the screen or respond to any button pushes, wouldn't show up on the app (although it's 50/50 if it does that when it's working). I have it sitting at home now and it's on day 3 of a full charge, guess they only work with no other nodes around! Meshtastic was showing off a custom firmware at the show, but I forgot to ask them about it!
We didn't see any hobo poop! It was just a regular city, guess it's the same deal where people think Minneapolis has nightly riots or Portland is always on fire 😝
I stopped by your booth, but you had drawn such a crowd. Very cool projects! Love the radio stuff.
It was crazy busy, sorry we missed you! Was fun to meet people but also a very distracting environment!

Thanks for stopping by our Meshtastic booth. The radio telescope was really cool, and I think your cyberdeck inspired many people (me included).
I'll stick a mesh node in the thing as soon as I have a chance! Thanks for the suggestions on Meshtastic stuff!
I saw the OSHA stickers all around the place on people's stuff.

I love the cheeky note you left for TSA. It's almost a shame they didn't open it. I'm sure they would have enjoyed the read, as i did.
