Frankie Valli ~ Grease 1978 Disco Purrfection Version

- Frankie Valli's first #1 hit was 1962's "Sherry" as recorded by the Four Seasons. The band had been at it since 1955 recruiting songwriters and producers Bob Crewe and Bob Gaudio in 1958. "Sherry" was a monster, spending five weeks at #1, followed by a quick succession of "Big Girls Don't Cry" and "Walk Like A Man" becoming the first group to have their first three singles reach #1. They began losing steam shortly after Frankie Valli solo recording of "Cant Take My Eyes Off Of You" in 1968.
The band faded away, but Frankie kept recording songs like the #1 "My Eyes Adored You" and then some disco songs like "Swearin To God", "Our Day Will Come" and a version of "Native New Yorker". That led to a new Four Seasons band that burst back on the charts with the #3 chart showing of "Who Loves You" and then the #1 hit "December 1963 (Oh What A Night)". In 1977, there was a buzz around a nostalgia soaked musical with original music that celebrated the greasers of the late 50's and early 60's.
Olivia Newton John and John Travolta were attached and soon a wide array of 50 and 60's personalities filled the various roles to be played onscreen. The Bee Gees were well on their way to super stardom and took time to write the title tune and invited Frankie Valli to record it. The result was a #1 Hot 100 hit and the soundtrack became the second biggest seller, right behind "Saturday Night Fever" with 24 million copies sold.
"Grease" was written and produced by Barry Gibb with Peter Frampton on guitar. It is the only Gibb tune on the album and was written by request by RSO.

The Gibb family brought to disco music what it needed to flourish during these golden years: inspiration, liveliness and recognition.
they were disco's Beatles.
The Gibb family, so much talent and they shared it with us! Thankyou.

Barry Gibb..... Truly shares his talent as composer and give others a big hits......Great attitude....thank you....
I was in high school when this movie was a smash hit. The theaters were very full of high school students, and was also very fun to see this at a drive-in. I think I went to see it 6 or 7 times and still watch it when it comes on. Loved my high school years.
I saw it in 1978...the same year I graduated high school 😊
I was 8 years old in 1980 growing up in Mexico and my uncle used to play this song over and over on his record player 😂😂😂 and ever since I love this song brings me back old good memories.

I love this disco version. Great dance tune.
I love this song. I always thought that the original was to short. This extended version is great and the saxophone is amazing. Grease and Bugsy Malone . My most favourite musicals.
Great disco track with a real RNB soulful feel , exquisitely crafted
Simply beautiful
Many disco songs by late 70s had groove and feel by funk and r & b.For these reasons they are gorgeous.

Purrfection Version las mejores versiones!!!! muchas gracias por regalarnos estas fantasticas ediciones!!!!!!
And absolutely incredible mixing, by the way! Last Night a DJ saved my life but today, baby, you saved my soul!!!
Once again, thanks for elevating this anomalous curiosity to show both its true nature and the signature genius of Barry Gibb. One of the best pop songs of the 70s, and though it enjoyed (and enjoys) great success, I'm not sure many people realize how great it is. And not even an Oscar nomination, let alone a win, for Best Song in 1978.
Grease is the Word!!
Man I remember I used to play this song every first day of school till the last day year came around hard to believe time flies 😩
So love this and the film 👍👍👍🤗🤗🤗♥️♥️♥️♥️💌💌💌🥰🥰

Love 💖 it. 💃🥁 🕺!
Just excellent.....I was 9 when this came out....modern historians equate the 1970s with decline and decay but I think it was the most creative decade since the war and laid the foundations for the modern world. This tune brings back great childhood memories, Star Wars, my elder brother smelling of Brut, and my Dad complaining at petrol being 70p a gallon!
+Tim P, nah, degeration and decay. Music is not real--it's a collection of rifts, song lines, tracks, musicians, musical instruments. It's all thrown together to take the minds of drug users and other shallow thinkers away from the realities of life. The arts in the Nazi era exploded, but they were all the same thing: glorification of the state, Hitler, and racism. The 70s and the disco era were a slide toward degeneracy--that's why it lasted such a short period of time: there was substance to it--it bored people by trying to fool them into thinking there was something real in it.
Jim Porter your a fucking DISGRACE
John Moraites I second that well said
Nugget McGraw great point and very true
Jane Hibberd I was seven and the disco, funk, soul and boogie was the greatest music decade which is late seventies and early eightes
Set the template for everything that came after
Absolutely perfect for Disco and most admired of the Century I. I love it! Thank you for sharing 👍❤️

Una de las mejores canciones que he escuchado en mi vida 👏🇨🇷
On this day in 1978 {July 4th} Frankie Valli was a guest on the nationally syndicated weekday-afternoon television program, 'The Mike Douglas Show'...
At the time his "Grease" was at position #16 on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart, seven weeks later it would peak at #1 {for 2 weeks} and it spent twenty two weeks on the Top 100...
It reached #3 on the United Kingdom's Singles chart...
Between 1966 and 1980 the Newark, New Jersey native, as a solo artist, had fourteen records on the Top 100 chart, four* made the Top 10 with three reaching #1, besides the above "Grease", his two other #1 records were "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" for 1 week in 1967 and "My Eyes Adored You" for 1 week in 1975...
Beside his three #1 records his fourth Top 10 record was "Swearin' to God" {#6 for 1 week in July of 1975}...
As a member of the Four Seasons he charted forty-two times, fourteen made the the Top 10 with five reaching #1, "Sherry" for 5 weeks in 1962, "Big Girls Don't Cry" for 5 weeks in 1962, "Walk Like A Man" for 3 weeks in 1963, "Rag Doll" for 2 weeks in 1964, and "December 1963 {Oh What A Night}" for 3 weeks in 1976...
And as a member of the Wonder Who?, four of their records made the Top 100 chart, with their covered version of Dylan's "Don't Think Twice" peaking at #12 in 1965...
In 1956 he was a member of the Four Lovers, they had one Top 100 record, "You're the Apple of My Eye", it reached #62, and on May 6th, 1956 they performed the song on 'The Ed Sullivan Show'...
Frankie Valli, born Francesco Stephen Castelluccio, celebrated his 85th birthday two months ago on May 3rd, 2019...
* And from the 'For What It's Worth' department; he just missed having a fifth Top 10 record when his covered version of "Our Day Will Come" peaked at #11 {for 2 weeks} in December of 1975...
One overlooked fact: "December 1963: Oh What A Night" charted 4 decades in a row (60's-90's) and was one of the rare songs to be in the Top 100 for that long of a time. (Source: American Top 40)

Gracias a Dios

OMG this lyrical content! I always heard this song as a kid and loved it. 46 now and blown away by the lyrical content!
Don't get me wrong, I would never substitute today for yesterday. I have a wonderful family that fulfils my life and I am in a place now that makes me way too big to fit into the mold of the soul I was before. But beautiful music like this takes me back to a place where the houses are no longer there. Trees have been misplaced and faces of strangers have replaced those dear to me now long gone. I miss them sometimes, and when this composition takes me to those ghost hallways, although I cant go back, it makes me wish I could visit sometimes. Just sometimes...
turn up the volume and close your eyes......
:) Have you listened to the wailing horns/sax in this rendition. You close your eyes on this bad boy, you may never want to open them :)

Born in 1970 this is a song I heard often on the radio
[Verse 1]
I saw my problems and I'll see the light
We got a lovin' thing, we gotta feed it right
There ain't no danger, we can go too far
We start believin' now that we can be who we are
Grease is the word
They think our love is just a growin' pain
Why don't they understand? It's just a cryin' shame
Their lips are lyin', only real is real
We stop the fight right now, we got to be what we feel
Grease is the word
[Chorus]
Grease is the word, is the word that you heard
It's got a groove, it's got a meaning
Grease is the time, is the place, is the motion
Grease is the way we are feeling
[Verse 2]
We take the pressure and we throw away
Conventionality belongs to yesterday
There is a chance that we can make it so far
We start believin' now that we can be who we are
Grease is the word
grateful!!
True that
