I don't think Julian has made or been involved with the making of a bad song in his entire life. What a musical genius!

I feel like Phrazes for the Young for him closer to his rock n roll phase. Fun fact: 3 members of The (future) Voidz helped him make the song “I like the 😊night”, which is an original song he wrote for a cologne commercial! This guy wrote an original song for A COMMERCIAL. “My Drive Thru” was also a commercial ad for Converse. If you haven’t heard it then I recommend that you do!

This album's amazing. It sounds distorted b'c of the apocalyptic waste land theme. A robotic voice recruiting what's left in the aftermath when M.A.D. was ignored. The sounds/effects/voices are perfect for the slow machinations of a world grinding slowly to a halt. It even sounds like it.

"This is not for everybody; this is for nobody...
Then, *that* drawn-out sigh of relief. Like Jules is shedding a weight that had been building for more than a decade; can feel that palpably in this song, on this album, with what he's pursuing now, musically. What a vein of form he's found.

Now, if you really want to be blown away, you should check out there random and incredible jam sessions during concerts. These guys have mastered music and can make it ON A WHIM!! It’s literally extraordinary!!

I feel like this song explains how julian feelt about the music industry he wanted to be like everyone else just to be in their army of mainstream artist but now he just does his own thing and I think he should keep rolling with it

  • @briand1501
    @briand1501 9 ปีที่แล้ว +125

this song is so meta. it starts with why this project came to be: "something to do", "when you don't want it anymore" could refer to julian's work with the strokes and wanting to take a break from it. they wish that this project stays away from the mainstream limelight: "not ready for the podium yet". the second verse probably refers to the production of this album and the creative process. "innovators" referring to the album's experimental departure from Julian's usual materials and "shameless imitators" referring to how the album still borrows ideas/motifs from his other materials, most notably Julian's vocals. seems like he's pleased with the outcome though, "best time is when i feel your lashes lashing me". lashes probably refers to the album's resulting characteristic dark and aggressive sound. it's almost prophetic in that he knows that most people listening to this song will not like it and pan it: "this is not for everybody, this is for nobody," perhaps because of its experimental nature. same with the music critics: "it took a thousand days to build and only a day to destroy" probably refers to the album and the lukewarm reception it will/did receive. however at the same time it's almost in denial of that fact: "the customer is obviously oblivious and wrong" and still desires to be accepted: "take me in your army".

Yeah , no. It's clearly written for Nucleaur Fallout and Neo Conservative Religous Zealots. its just like the Clashs earlier work with Radio Clash.
This isn't for everybody ( not what the living masses want to hear)
This is for nobody ( its a message to the lifeless w/o a body)
It took a thousand years to build ( it took much work to build a civilization)
It took me a day to destroy ( in one day nucleaur destruction destroyed it all)
      The customer is obviously
      Oblivious and wrong
He also alludes to it at the ending of HUMAN SADNESS , in the end when nuclearur destructions kicks off and he puts his sunglasses on and there is a red.
In all my dreams, I'm waiting for ya
And nothing has ever changed, except I can't touch you
The best part is when I feel you
      You're just watchin' me
      Me
      Take me in your army
*Hes making reference to religious fanatics who spend life awaiting for REVELATIONS to happen and for jesus to return; like the necons.

it seems like a declaration of be active refusing the podium, but mixing in a society made up of innovators and imitators(enjoing of their lashes). a society( critic to politicians) where something is accessible to someone and other thing is denied to anyone. a society in which to build something good needs a long time but politicians can destroy in oneday and the people is always wrong( this is tyranny). so julian wants to fight making part of the antisistem army.

    tyranny
    Phrazes for the young
    Virtue
ranking it because I think the first two are really original, while virtue was the basic even though it isn't? you'll understand if you listen to the voidz and maybe two other bands everyday

Norman Garcia virtue is definitely more tamed than tyranny...but it’s still unique and very creative, the drummer went all out on that album haha. And the change of pace between each song is definitely awesome like between We’re where we were and Lazy Boy. Still, i don’t think we can put Phrazes in this comparison. I liked all of them btw...my favs are Dare i care and Tourist’s/Glass’s guitar solos, as to virtue still haven’t made my mind yet :p

I like the direction of the Album and the total project, I think it’s the way tyranny captured my total musical attention that I was left with.. what if Virtue was released first, and Tyranny second.
As for phrazes It has more similarities to Virtue, just too me I like it a little more.
