Scott Riggs is an example of wrong place, wrong time, wrong opportunities. After having two amazing years in the Busch series he basically was on two teams that were already starting to decline and since then never got to show his potential becoming the next James Buescher.
I’ll never forget his run in the 2005 Daytona 500. He was so fast. Got a 4th place finish and was up front all race. He was always a dark horse for me at the plate tracks. Shame his career didn’t work out.
Scott Riggs really should have been the next big thing. He had so much talent and showed so much potential from 2004-06, but he always seemed to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. He joined MB2 as they were falling apart, and then Evernham when they falling apart too. Riggs was just a victim of being with the wrong team constantly
I always remember (as a kid) hating Mark Martin because he drove a Ford but alway loving the paint scheme even then. The red white and blue with the big V I loved it
Scott Pruett had a fine racing career though, and did quite well on road courses, almost winning in Mexico City in 2007 until Juan Pablo Montoya spun him out.
Riggs seemed like a pretty solid prospect before going to Everham. I think he ultimately got sucked into the Everham blackhole that hurt everybody's career unless they were maybe Bill Elliott and Kasey Kahne.
Good stuff as always! He sure kept the fab shop busy with all the torn up sheetmetal, that is for sure. Never was the same after Jon Wood dumped his shot at the Busch title away at Homestead in 03.
Yes Layne is a great racer and could great it better levels but teams want to much money even for late models because we have a old car vs jrs cars and other teams with money
I have a series idea: Races to be remembered or Races to be forgotten. Like the 2007 Daytona 500 (Remembered) or the 2008 Brickyard 400 (Hopefully forgotten).
I live in Durham, NC which is basically the same city Riggs is from. We have some mutual friends and Ive met him on several occasions and we even got to hang with him in the in field at S. Boston Speedway during his truck days. On top of being a very humble and cool guy, he had the talent to win races obviously when he was in good equipment as seen in his truck and Infinty days. Til this day I believe going with Evernham was the move that doomed his career. They just weren't good enough. Now I don't know how true it is, but I was told by a source close to him that DEI wanted him, but he chose not to sign because for one, we all heard the rumors about Mrs Earnhaedt not being the easiest person to work for and I also was told they wanted too much rights to Riggs. Was told he couldn't make a buck without DEI getting a cut if he signed on that line. It will always leave me wondering what could have been if he had though. With that being said I hate to see him being referred to as a "bust" although I understand. Despite that he'll still always be one of my favorite drivers! He also kicks ass on a motocross track which is what he did before he went to four wheels and being a motocrosser at heart myself that's just more props I have to give the man
Scott had like the championship lead entering Rockingham, lost it and dropped like second or third entering Miami. Crashes on lap one and ended up sixth. Shows how intense that 2003 NBS title chase was. Vickers wasn't really a factor until his IRP win and had Herzog had the sponsorship, Todd Bodine would've been in that mix too. Todd is arguably a Cup bust when you look how often he bounced back and forth from Cup to Busch.
I was a huge Johnny Benson fan and it made me so upset to see Scott Riggs take over the #10 car. At least Johnny was able to go on to win a Truck Championship, but I’m still pretty salty about Scott Riggs taking his Cup ride.
Johnny was at that point, though. Didn’t get his only win until he was 39 and I don’t think it helped that season that he had to sit out a few races on 2 occasions due to injury and followed it up with a bad year. But yeah, Riggs wasn’t what they should’ve gotten and it looks bad
Good Videos. I don't know if you take requests, but David Stremme. Drove for Ganassi and Penske, in cars where the previous drivers won races, and barely did anything.
I figured you would get to this guy, I always thought Scott Riggs was going to be an awesome addition to the NASCAR series but it ended up regressing. I always say that he was a good driver but he went to the wrong team/owner combination because he was a good Busch driver and his likability and his Southern roots would have been nice to have in the series for a good while.
I remember reading an article on Scott Riggs on how he declined an offer to drive for Hendrick in the Busch series because he felt loyal to ppc racing and how he decided evernham to replace bill in the #9 after 2003
The Larson Fan 8842 You self righteous hypocrite! Danica, has her own share of ' busts ', but a lot of the time, she didn't cause the accident, but got ' caught up ' in someone else's mess. And Kyle, isn't a 'squeaky' clean driver himself. Don't get me wrong, I like Kyle, but if Danica had been given good equipment, and NOT used as a ' Publicity Figure ', she probably would have done a lot better.
That's not a really good excuse, Trevor Bayne is driving the same equipment his teammate Ricky Stenhouse Jr. Is driving, and Ricky got 2 wins with that equipment. So that only goes to show that even if Bayne was driving freaking championship equipment, he would still underperfom and would keep wrecking cars.
Kira Did Nothing Wrong. Not exactly the 6 and 17 have way diffrent people working and building both cars so they are diffrent and Matt Kenseth has proved that its the Equipment not the driver
Hold it right there, you first said "Trevor isn't a bust just bad equipment" and now you're saying that they have different people working and building both cars? first of all that's wrong, Roush makes both cars, while it's true that they both have different pit crews, chiefs and spotter, that's still not a good excuse, considering Bayne also wrecked a lot of cars back when he was with the Wood Brothers, so it's clearly the driver and not the equipment nor the crew. And yes, while I agree Kenseth hasn't done very well, the guy has come back to racing after 6 months of inactivity, I say wait for next season at least to see how well he does on that #6 car. So yeah, overall, Bayne's just a one-win wonder and he's still in the cup series only because of that single win 7 years ago. Even Advocare realized that Bayne's not a good driver, and they dropped their sponsorship to only 12 races, to probably just leave Roush next season. If you have any, ANY good argument that explains why Bayne it's not a bust, then I will hear you, if you have something nonsencial or just plain dumb to say, I just suggest you to not respond, since it would just be a waste of yours, and my time. Bayne's a bust, period.
Kira Did Nothing Wrong. Bayne is not a bust. Roush's equipment is just not that good and the only reason why Stenhouse is doing worth a damn right now is because he is such a good driver. Bayne would be well-suited in a situation like Menard or Newman is in right now since he's a good driver and can bring the car home in one piece but hasn't been doing so well since he's overdriving his stuff just to get anything out of it.
Scott Riggs could of been a good decent driver who could get a win or two each year if he was in good equipment and if he wasn’t wrecking every week every some of the wreaks he was in weren’t his fault except for Kurt
I miss the old days of Benny in the booth I loved listening to him call races, but I wouldn’t put Scott as a bust I mean stat wise I see it totally but he wasn’t really in the greatest of equipment the majority of his career
You know I have played the Scott Riggs Mission on Nascar 06 but have never seen the actual crash with Kurt Busch I just remember having Kurt or Scott having a crazy wreck sometimes during it
Lets remember he led basically every lap of the Open in 2006 with MB2 to transfer into the all-star race. Remember that he was racing against guys in top tier equipment in that Open like Yeley, Hamlin, Vickers, etc. Wish this dude could've made it stick.
This is just an example of how some are just meant to be full time Truck or Xfinity drivers. I never understood how you can have success in those series and then struggle so badly in cup it's just crazy.
Justin Salinari I don’t think people realize how important it is to have a good fit with the right people too. Joey Lagano truex and Kyle Busch are examples, they could have just as easily been relegated to field fillers before they got their break and ended up in one of these videos
The guy drove penske equipment in 2009 and record 0 top 10's for crying out loud. He never won a race in nascar's top 3 series and only 3 career top 10's.
jems 78 tbh that was at a time when Penske as a whole was usually mediocre and the only one that had a chance at the time to compete for a top 10 or win was Kurt Busch, however Stremme is still a bust.
jems 78 penske wasn't really a high tier team in the late 2000s. In 2008 ryan newman and kurt busch both won a race for him but they didn't make chase because they were mediocre. The mediocre runs carried in 2009 where this time at least one of their cars made the chase. I understand that stremme is a bust but penske struggle at the same time with him.
I'm not a huge racing fan so I'm not all that knowledgeable, but it's amazing to me that you can have a crash like that and walk away fine. That seems like it'd be pure luck, but I'm sure it's more about how safe they've made the cars.
I have an idea for a new series. How about the rise of race teams and the fall of race teams. Like the rise of Stewart-Haas, and the fall of Bud Moore Engineering.
Ray needed the sponsorship, he saw the ship starting to sink and had to do anything he could to keep it going. I liked Riggs as a guy but he was never "Cup material" IMO. He was one of the few who didn't take a start and park at first believing it was wrong and it ultimately sped up his demise in the Series. I am waiting for a bust episode on Mike Skinner though, truck success aside, he was a failure in Cup reminiscent of Park when it came to a bad break on some injuries but he never closed the deal in a Cup car.
Riggs and Wimmer were the reason NASCAR introduced the Top 35 rule in 2005. No one would have cared about changing the provisional rules for 50+ car entry lists if it weren’t for Atlanta 2004.
NASCAR Busts: Dario Franchitti Bad Seasons: Martin Truex Jr 2014 Bad Seasons: Carl Edwards 2012 Bad Seasons: Joey Logano 2017 Championship Seasons: Martin Truex Jr 2017 Championship Seasons: Tony Stewart 2011 Championship Seasons: Chase Elliott 2014
I have to admit watching nascar growing up I was already a Dale Earnhardt Jr fan in cup but who to follow in the lower ranks? It was Scott Riggs shame he really never got the opportunities he deserved. :(
NASCAR Busts: Brendan Gaughan? Bobby Hamilton Jr.? Johnny Sauter? Travis Kvapil? David Gilliland? Stacy Compton? Stanton Barrett? Sam Hornish Jr.? Larry Foyt? Todd Kluever? Erik Darnell? Colin Braun? Joey Coulter?
Randolf didn't give Scott good cars at MBV in 04 and 05 when Scott missed Atlanta race Pemberton tore down Scott's car and Ryan said Doug had the car all Jacked up, then they hired Rodney as car chief in 05 and mid-way through the season they fired Randolf and Rodney was promoted. MBV found out Scott was leaving to go to EMS in 06( Everham wanted Scott 2nd over Kasey from his rookie season including DEI ) and half way through 05 they stopped given Scott good equipment. At EMS Scott had good equipment, missed the 500 because Rodney ran the Trans fluid low to reduce friction, but burned up the gear and being a new team missed the 500 but went on the to lead laps and shoulda woulda coulda won some races that year and finished 19th in points ahead of Bobby Labonte. 07 EMS had a bogus Aero Package software downloaded throughout 2/3's of the 07 season till it was caught and it affected Kasey Elliot and Scott the most and Everham sold EMS to another owner and was the start of the end for Scott.....that's the short story of a Great Driver that luck and fate affects us all. I worked for Scott....and that's the short story:-)
Please do a NASCAR Bust Buckshot Jones. That guy wrecked more cars than Danica Scott Riggs Scott Wimmer Derrike Cope Chad Little Trevor Bayne and David Ragan combined
I don't get how some of these team owners think. You see a guy that has a terrible record, wrecks constantly, is always at the bottom of the points rankings... And they want to bring this rolling catastrophe aboard. Wha...??
Riggs won multiple truck races, multiple Busch races, and came two races away from a Busch series championship. Plus he overperformed in the Evernham 10 car in 2006. I'd say that's not a bust.
Riggs was my favourite driver when he was racing, but I have to admit he wasn’t a great cup driver. If he had another full time opportunity in Trucks after his Cup career he absolutely could’ve won the championship though. He was really good in Busch and great in trucks. There’s a long list of drivers who just aren’t cut out for Cup.
Man going back and listening to the old commentary makes me miss and appreciate Benny Parsons more and more every time I hear it.
He always seemed like a family member more than just an announcer.
Who's that
@@hockeyfan1988 I agree 100%

While on the subject of valvoline do Nascar Busts: Patrick Carpentier
Eric Fording His time in the #10 made Danica’s look amazing
Dana Chappell that surely says a lot
I personally thought the 10 car had a beautiful paint scheme
On a Dodge? Gorgeous.
I always remember (as a kid) hating Mark Martin because he drove a Ford but alway loving the paint scheme even then. The red white and blue with the big V I loved it
Pretty much any valvoline schemes look great
The moral of these NASCAR Bust videos? If you want to have a good career in NASCAR, better make sure your name isn’t Scott.
Let’s see...
Scott Riggs
Scott Wimmer
Scott Speed
Scott Pruett
Scott Lagasse
Scott Lagasse Jr.
Brian Scott
Yeah, that’s not good.
I came here to point this out as well.
Wendell Scott stops it, Hall of famer.
Scott Pruett had a fine racing career though, and did quite well on road courses, almost winning in Mexico City in 2007 until Juan Pablo Montoya spun him out.

That was a HUGE mess and he arrived just as it was beginning or when stuff started to come out about what was brewing under the surface
Dude was great in the 10 nesquick car in The Busch series
Good stuff as always! He sure kept the fab shop busy with all the torn up sheetmetal, that is for sure. Never was the same after Jon Wood dumped his shot at the Busch title away at Homestead in 03.

Whats that beat name?
I remember his Busch seasons well he came close to Winning it I think in 03
Need a David Ragan bust video, or maybe a David Gilliland one.
Great video, but what’s with the anxiety causing background music?
I had to pause the video a few times cuz I couldn't figure out what that noise was. I thought my refrigerator was taking a shit or something.
Bad seasons: Ford, 2009
We need a NASCAR Busts Danica Patrick
Please do a NASCAR Bust Buckshot Jones. That guy wrecked more cars than Danica Scott Riggs Scott Wimmer Derrike Cope Chad Little Trevor Bayne and David Ragan combined
The music in the background.
I don't get how some of these team owners think. You see a guy that has a terrible record, wrecks constantly, is always at the bottom of the points rankings... And they want to bring this rolling catastrophe aboard. Wha...??
Would Travis Kvapil be considered a bust?
Riggs won multiple truck races, multiple Busch races, and came two races away from a Busch series championship. Plus he overperformed in the Evernham 10 car in 2006. I'd say that's not a bust.
Riggs was my favourite driver when he was racing, but I have to admit he wasn’t a great cup driver. If he had another full time opportunity in Trucks after his Cup career he absolutely could’ve won the championship though. He was really good in Busch and great in trucks. There’s a long list of drivers who just aren’t cut out for Cup.
He should’ve won Michigan 2005 (fuel mileage when he got blocked by Robby while he was catching Mayfield), and the Coke 600 in 2006.
Evernham’s equipment in 2007 was atrocious though, you can’t blame him for that’s
Is that window pain at the beginning?!???!
You know it
Bad seasons: Danica Patrick 2017 (or anytime in her career) or just do a busts video on her.
Mason Shell That’s her whole career.
Scott Riggs was a good driver, but the bad thing is that he was always in the wrong team at the wrong time.
As much as Kurt deserved the payback he was right about it was not the right time to do it
To be fair he did finish 4th in the 05 Daytona 500
He has another highlight. 4th in the 2005 Daytona 500
The crew chief Kurt didn't know was Rodney Childers, i didn't know that Childers was Riggs crew chief.
7:13 thats what he said, Kurt.
