Die Spatzenmesse wurde bereits in den Fünfzigern von unserem Unterstufenchor der Hansaschule in HH-Bergedorf aufgeführt. An die Aufführung erinnere ich mich auch heute noch gern...:)))

When Mozart's Salzburg religious works were performed at the cathedral, female soloists were often used. Michael Haydn's wife, referred to as "die Haydnin" in letters between the Mozarts, was many times the soprano soloist. However, when the works were performed in the afternoon at the Collegiate Church, only boys sang. We know how good the boy soloists were at the latter choir from the little opera "Apollo et Hyacinthus" Mozart wrote when he was eleven that used soloists from there. Around 1900, the pope banned these types of masses that Mozart and Haydn wrote from being used in church services, but made an exception for German speaking parts of Europe which were predominantly Catholic. I don't know whether they have lifted that yet.

I first heard this piece at last Sunday's mass in St. Mary's Cathedral, Sydney, Australia. Sung by the choir and accompanied by the organ.

When you hear the "music" sung at most Catholic masses today, one would certainly welcome the Viennese masters!

Barocke Theatralik können se ja, die Katholiken. Anders als die Calvinisten.

das ist Kunst ! Ars longa, vita brevis !
Eines der frühen Meisterwerke von Mozart mit Polytextierung, um es nicht zu lang zu machen für eine katholische Messe.

I do find it a little sad the Kölner Domchor, which is a large choir could not find 4 members from its ranks to sing the solo parts, in what to my mind is one of Mozart's best masses. Particularly because Germany produces so many wonderful boys choirs. Sorry to be negative but it is thumbs down from me.

One of the soloists is member of the choir. Anyways not every good choir boy/singer is also a good soloist …

Did it ever occur to you that maybe they need a different tone than a child's to sing the solo part? In my old school too, it was sung by the teacher, not because the choir members aren't good enough, but because it's intended to be sung by an adult. The fact that there's a whole hundred of people performing, after not a short time of practice, such a wonderfully put together Ensemble to create a magnificent harmony, and the only thing you can spot in a bad light is the four soloists' singing deserves a thumb down, sorry for the negativity:)

@@ruu406I apologise if my comments have caused offence, they were not intended to do so. I have given a thumbs up for the recording which I love. My comment was purely to say that with a choir as good as this, it is a shame, given this Mass isn’t as frequently recorded as others, it didn’t feature the talents of a boy soprano and boy alto which Continental choirs produce in quality and quantity.
