Haha Curtis Burch (the one in the back) is a very good friend of mine and was one of my teachers at the Ky school of Bluegrass and Traditional music. He's THE greatest musician ive ever got the privilege to know. Can pick anything
I saw this version of NGR many times. I always enjoyed watching Courtney Johnson's wife I believe who sat behind the band changing strings whenever someone tore one up. Right in the middle of a song, Sam tore up a wire, and he handed the mandolin back and she gave him one and the music never stopped. Great stuff 👍
This is so awesome! Sam's playing is so advanced here, it sounds exactly like it does today... and the double banjo work is just superb! Nothing like early NGR cuts!
that's Butch! always innovative and evolving. if you like this version, listen to "Doin' My Time" on a project he put together in the early 90's from the Once Again From the Top Series. it will blow your mind!
I first saw and heard this group in the early 70's when they opened for and then backed up Vassar Clements at the Exit Inn in Nashville. Sam never picked up his fiddle that night. I lost count of the strings they broke. All but Vassar had extra instruments on stage. Pretty amazing!
The original bass player for NGR, Ebo Walker (Harry Lee Shelor Jr.), did his time. He was released in Feb. 2013 after serving almost 31 years for shooting and killing a policeman in a marijuana patch.
Ebo claimed he only meant to scare the state trooper who was in plainclothes ! I hung out where they played in Louisville and remember it well. Tony Rice got his first job playing there in Bluegrass Alliance along with Sam Bush ! !
40 years ago and it still sounds DAMN FINE!!.....These guys were ahead of their time.

Don't forget Curtis Burch on guitar on this cut!!! He was just as important as Sam and Courtney!
You may be thinking of the version he did on his "Grounded-Centered-Focused" album........it's definitely mind-blowing!

oldcremona Dayam. That's life imitating art a little too closely for my comfort.
+oldcremona I heard he had cancer.
oldcremona No different than a moonshiner shooting a revenue man. I don't even like the stuff but it should be 100% legal.
Should have set fire to the patch instead. Cop might have changed his mind!
