As far as monitors the JBLs that followed in the next generation with the titanium dome tweeters were much better than the '70s versions. And JBL continued to refine and experiment with titanium in the years that followed. Yamaha also produced some speakers under their highest Beryllium models with titanium tweeters that are OK. I have a set of two way home versions of those. JBL L100ts on a tube amp are pretty good and they can pressurize a room with bass. The cabinets are huge and the woofer magnets very very heavy. And tubes warm up that tweeter so there is no real metal ringing or negatives.
Hello, do you think that the kenwood ls 990 need some kind of modification to sound better?Possible replacement of the electrolytic bipolar capacitors in the filters? Still over 40+ years old.
I love those speaker test you make, and yup, you should have keept those JBLs to test them next to the Canton, Heco and Magnat... You got a vintage channel to show vintage stuff, good, bad or to open the eyes of people. Imagine, you could have upgraded those crossover caps and see if you can get an improvement and finally sell it with a profit. Too bad you got rid of them like the plague. Anyway, you could invite somebody that own those speakers to make a test next to your speakers and we can be the jury... that would be something to watch :)
Studio speakers don't mean that they don't sound good,I have heard many speakers and there are studio units that sound good ,natural sound no extra exaggeration just plain good sound.

Kenwood showed they could if they wanted to. They never made anything like these, up to that time, which is why, many don't believe they have the build and sound to them.
I have a set of these JBL L100 and changed the crossover and they will make you eat your words. Those crossovers aren't great over time but can be improved.
Hi, great channel and I have really enjoyed the video on the LS-990, I have owned a pair for just over a year and have enjoyed them very much. I am using them with an Sansui AU 317 and Sansui 551 receiver, they both sound good. I was wondering on your thoughts about the best amp for getting the best out of the 990? Regards Richard
lucky one, because they are very rare. I still have to test them out so the video will come but the more heavy a amp is the more punch it gives, The ls 990 is however a high sensitive speaker with 93 db so also normal amps should do a excellent job with these speakers
For the last five years, jbl studio 698, 690, 680, 630 has been on sale all over the world And they enjoy great recognition from reviewers. They say that these are the best speakers of the last 20 years in their price category. that these are atypical JBLs that have nothing to do with cheap sound. That they are fascinating, detailed, large, heavy and are surprisingly cheap for this level of sound, they simply have no competitors. I would like you to check this)

Endrew is spot on, to me they suck. Monitors are meant to play flat 20 Hz to 20,000kHz. There is no dynamic range what an audiophile appreciates. They were overhyped back in the day.
