  • Output: yellow slider.
Yellow slider slides on white stationary runway.
Beige slider slides on yellow slider.
The black cable is wound many times around the red pulley to ensure the cable does not slip on the pulley.
One brand of the black cable wraps around pink and blue pulleys. Its end is fixed to pin A of the yellow slider.
The other brand of the black cable wraps around orange pulley. Its end is fixed to pin B of the yellow slider.
The green cable wraps around the green pulley. One end of it is fixed to pin C of the white stationary runway. The other end is fixed to pin F of the beige slider.
The violet cable wraps around the violet pulley at the back side. One end of it is fixed to pin D of the white stationary runway. The other end is fixed to pin E of the beige slider.
The green spring and pink pulley pivoted on the orange slider are used to automatically tension the black cable.
Such a cable arrangement helps the sliders move in both directions by reversing the motor without the aid of gravity.
The beige slider can have a very long travel distance, almost 4 times the distance between the blue pulley and the orange pulley as shown in the last scene of the video.

I used to do robotics competitions and this was a pretty common mechanism for designing a linear slider. It was called a "cascading string lift." The main issue with it was that it required a lot of torque to lift up multiple stages at once.
    Nice illustration!

That's brilliant, thank you for making this video. I had always wondered how a telescopic crane worked. This explains so much.
