I saw a picture of a bonsai where it appeared as if the wind was blowing all the branches in one direction. Thus reminded me of it, albeit the pic was severe. Awesome! Tfs
This approach is very interesting. It's like putting the element in a sona. Or, like it is said in another comment, like placing a plank in a steam box to bend into shape. I question about doing this with wires on, and then removing them, is probably the best thing to do as it might leave a scar on the branch. But all in all, this approach has merit as its a new way of shaping a bonsai with faster results. Placing it back in the sun afterwards could have it bend back into something unexpected but.... I encourage you to continue testing this new technic 👍. Also, thinking about it, doing it during the dormant season could be another way to preventing damage to awaiting buds.
Great techniques! Like we bend willow for furniture or Tamarack to make snowshoes!Hot water and steam! Not to mention basket weaving. My hands still hurt from the basket I made in grade school 35 years ago... Haha!
In the case of the tanuki base, what about a sealed box like carpenters use but smaller. I'm sure they steam their lumber a good long time to make it pliable. As always, a great video with lots of practical information! Thank you!
Try wrapping the branch in kitchen paper before steaming. When it absorbs the steam it may retain the heat a little longer. I used to wrap the branch in wet paper which in turn was wrapped in Al foil, before applying heat with a gas flame to create steam. Your device may be better at applying heat to the paper, which is covered by the foil in your original method.
@GrowingBonsai Yeah, but japanese black pines are so expensive here in South africa 🇿🇦 I have 5, but they're still youngish. Junipers are a bit cheaper
I’ll be curious to see how it turns out in the long run. Steam treated lumber can warp when get gets wet. Iv always assumed it was because the lumber was under stress when the steam was applied then warps back once wet again. If steam by itself doesn’t last you might try to steam treat it, like you did, and then apply heat to the branch (wrap it in foil first, then torch it) to break down the lignin. Like chemical decomposition or “Normalizing” steel.
Very nice, I just got some old junipers from a friends yard. They have dead wood in all different direction. I saw a video long ago about bending wood and I think they used a little vinegar with the water but don’t take my word for it. Look for other videos about bending wood. I’m going to do just that. I’ll leave another comment if I find something.
I wonder if you had either an ice bath or a sprayer with ice water, would it hard set the newly bent branches to where it was even more rigid? (Like a blacksmith quenching hot metal)
I have used a wallpaper steamer connected to a capped length of plastic drainpipe, with a vent hole to steam and bend timber. If rather than foil, you had a plastic, lidded box that contains the steam at a greater density, for longer…
Please sir wheres your gloves, etc, very useful method to bend dead branches with steam, I think it is bound to have stayed bent, what you going to do with the small dead piece did you say plant it ?, if it wasn't dead before I will be surprised if not dead now. Thanks Jelle.
Steam would propably kill all foliage, but is it too hot for bark and the living wood as well? Could you use steam to bend thicker trunks if you kept all the foliage safe?
sorry.. I had to take the previous version offline, and re-edit it. It is a bit short and the sound should be better balanced. Lets see whether people who saw it the first time, watch again
did you manage to look at the pics of my acer i uploaded my friend??.. when youre not busy, i would love your input. i did some work on it today after talking to you.. i made some changes with your olive tree in mind,........ :)
Great technique using the steam watch Dan Barton’s extreme deadwood branch bending using a blow torch yes it chars the deadwood but he cleans it using wire brush it’s amazing tbh 🫶
You come up with varied aspects to bonsai in your channel. Your 'Growing bonsai with Jelle' is a complete guide. 👍
ohw, thank you so much!

Thanks for sharing
Indeed! Italian it is!
Congrats, you’ve got yourself what we colloquially call a “vaporella”!
vaporella? Never come across these in dutch households!
Very useful tip ... might come in handy one day.
Definitely
i love the steam idea mate will be picking one of those up now for sure :)
You should!
Very interesting view of bending dead wood thanks jelle
You re wlecome. Thanks for your visit!

Good points to consider. Steam bending wood is of course no new concept. But the details on getting it to work perfectly..
Very nice tree

So true!
Fascinating tutorial, and science lesson.
Glad you enjoyed it
Proses bonsai yang luar biasa ❤😊
thank you so much!

yeah, I should look into making one
Interesting work!
Thank you! Cheers!

Très intéressant! Un grand merci pour la vidéo!
Thank you for the visit!
I don't have a juniper yet! I need to get one so I can actually create dead wood. Great video, Jelle
or a pine!

Lets see!
great video... can tell you are engineer .. "the hose thingy connects to the nozzle thingy" :-) ..looking forward to next ones
on purpose, all on purpose!

Interesting! Lets see whether that works
Nice plant
Thanks a lot
Good idea with steam...Ths
Most welcome 😊

Hm not sure that would make the big difference. Worth a try

excellent point! Been thinking the same tbh
👍👌🙂

Gloves? Dunno!
I am working on a video for Tanuki (as well as deadwood conservation). So I am going to fuse a living plant against the dead trunk.
Steam would propably kill all foliage, but is it too hot for bark and the living wood as well? Could you use steam to bend thicker trunks if you kept all the foliage safe?
@@JaniLaaksonen91 you cannot. Living tissue does not survive boiling temps
I just got a déjà vu on this video! 😆 I still like it though.. 😉

@MartijnSinkeler thx 👍👍
I had the same feeling 😅
Great job man
