Glad to see you got an early review copy for this. I was also not a fan of her first book, but this one seems to have more of what I may like...I am a sucker for mysterious ancient alien races and structures they leave behind. Good to hear that she is taking positive steps and I hope her writing career continues to be successful.
I have not read SA Barnes. This review helped me decide that I can wait for her to, as you put it, "get out of her own way" and write the great novel she is holding back from us. Thanks!
I absolutely love this type of setting and story. Do you have any suggestions for some good Sci-Fi Space horror stories that stuck the landing a bit better than this one?
Many long years ago when this channel was still a baby, I did a Halloween episode on this very topic. SFF180 Halloween 2015 | 7 Creepy SF/Horror Reads th-cam.com/video/j7RksgP8Yfc/w-d-xo.html
If you'd given it a 4 I would have considered it (as there are a lot of tropes in there that I do enjoy) but Dead Silence was so bad 3 stars is not enough to convince me. 😂
I love Sci·Horror and very much looking forward to reading Paradise-1 by David Wellington. First in a new series. Second book Revenant-X comes out in November.
I was really into Dead Silence up until about the half way point. Everything after that went down hill fast. Space horror is my most wished for genre of books and I'm glad she's out there writing them, but it doesn't sound like I need to check this one out. At least not unless I find a cheap copy somewhere.
Thanks for the review. Not sure if this will make my already crowded TBR but it sounds interesting. I'm more of a fantasy reader than sci-fi but I really like both. I plan to read The Three Body Problem and The Expanse this year...so I have some sci-fi on my TBR. One that I read a while back and really enjoyed was Old Man's War by John Scalzi...Have you read it? If so, what did you think? If not, you should give it a read. Thanks for the great review...Take care!
The Expanse series is also on my TBR for the year! I love Fantasy and SciFi. Horror too .. basically all genres but Romance. I actually really enjoyed Dead Silence and even though I haven't heard stellar reviews of Ghost Station, I'm still curious to try it myself. 😅
What a fantastic review. You really nailed why I want to keep supporting this author. I really like what she's trying to do even if she doesn't necessarily hit it out of the park for me.
I still have tension built from this one,as if let down from no suspense release!! I'm just waiting for her to build something material, touchable that will come from the dark(in a reading a book sense). These last 2 books have been a physiological nightmare of tension that dragged the past too long, yet I couldn't put them down. If the next book does exactly the same thing it could be the last one I get. But I have high hopes she'll come through!!
I hesitated on this author as u read reviews that it wasn't quite up to snuff. I am glad she improved from her first novel, but I am still not going to delve into her stories. I actually want to see a review on Waypoint Eclipse for sci-fi horror. Is that on your radar?

I'm happy she's improved a bit. Can't wait until she works her way up to at least a 4. Thank you!🎉

Good review! I think I’ll check this one out.
Did you get the feeling that she writes in hopes of a movie adaptation?
All her ideas seem cribbed from movies, so probably.

Thanks, Knotslip! Great to see you're checking out more SF. Here's my review of Old Man's War (from way back when it came out). 🙂 rb.gy/z3syvt

Thank you for reviewing this! I agreed with your review for Dead Silence. Do you recommend any space horror books like Alien or Event Horizon?
George R.R. Martin’s original Nightflyers novella probably comes closest to that Event Horizon vibe.
What is your favorite sci-fi horror?
Either HPL’s The Color out of Space or GRRM’s Sandkings.

I am not familiar with this one.
If I want Space Horror, I'll read the 2024 NASA budget.
😕 That’s more like Space Tragedy.
