I didn’t include Hidetsugu’s Second Rite because while it’s it a terrible card, I think basically everyone knows it’s terrible, so I wanted to highlight some other cards that are maybe a bit trickier for people to evaluate. It’s the same reason I didn’t include An Offer You Can’t Refuse on the list either, despite that card being awful in Draft as well. I like to keep the list to 10 cards and I thought it would be more helpful to discuss other bad cards like Juggernaut that I see people playing way more often. Hopefully that clarifies things!
@@NicolaiBolasit’s situational I built a low curve (average CMC 2) aggro red blue spells deck at an FNM. I’ve been drafting competitively for 6 years and I was able to win with hidgetsus second right THREE TIMES that night with my opponents all knowing I had that card from deck building. This was also in BO3 and even when my opponents knew it it’s possible to make it better than usual. If your deck runs “1 damage pingers” it makes it better as a win condition. Everyone told me to take it out of my deck but my point was made that it can be worth running especially if your deck cannot reliably get an opponent past 10 points of damage or if your deck gets outscaled. I had no bombs but went undefeated
I know it’s bad in draft, but I laughed for like a minute straight when I pulled fishing pole in my pre-release. It’s just so fun flavor wise, you’re having this life and death battle and you send one of your creatures to just go chill and fish. I’ve been trying to think of a way to build a fishing based commander deck ever since.
I hate to admit that I drafted 2 Midnight snack and 2 juggernauts in one draft thinking they'd mesh well. Both failed at they're job and it was one of my worst win rates that I've had. Knowing what happened and then seeing them on this list allows me to put more trust in your videos. Though I admit that Juggernaut just has a place in my heart because I just got back into playing but I started around the time of Tempest. I'll keep your tips in mind, thanks for the vid.
Jugg was good (ish) back in the day as in a world of hill giants and war mammoths it was above rate statwise - especially for an artifact creature. Creatures generally are much stronger now though, so poor old jugg just seems dire. I know how you feel though - are least Serra can still be solid in Limited!
This set has more abundant and worse traps than any in recent memory. A trap in Duskmourn was something like Unwanted Remake or Cackling Slasher; bad cards but still hesitant playables that have some impact on the game and are usually better than an 18th land. The same cannot be said of the Exsanguinates, Swiftfoot Boots, and Burnished Harts of this set. They seem to exist just to bait Commander players into playing the set and going 0-3.
Totally agree with all of these except I have played Boltwave in a deck with 3 of the UR flier and 2 of the 3UU giant wizard that cantrips and it was a quite good. Although I'll say I believe I played almost every instant and sorcery I got my hands on
I agree with everything here minus the wall, its wonderful if you're running gruul with either chandra, the dragon that pings three things the wurm that puts counters or really any of the 7 drops that require double or triple mana of a type. I agree its not the best but this set for me has been on the slower side and with the right deck it can be a life saver
Not fully agree with Midnight Snack. On the right white/black gain life deck it’s actually pretty decent. It worked well for me, winning me games indirectly and even directly as a win condition (fewer times).
Would've been my deck but I didn't put it in because all guides said to avoid it. Guides also said to avoid strix lookout and many more cards that are simply good, I'm never trusting them anymore.
#10traps Participated in my first draft in paper last night- went 2-1 with boros Leyline Axe aggro, splashing Elenda, Saint of Dusk and two Bake Into Pies (and good fixing to mostly manage the double black pips😅) Your tips and PDF were very helpful!! 🎉
Midnight snack is a weird one. It has won me (and my opponents) several games, but I’ve also watched it completely sit as a dead card. Is certainly the best in BW panda builds, and I won’t say never …. But it certainly has a low floor
Hmm, somehow I feel I'm going to fall into the traps of including Juggernaut and Adventuring Gear into my decks at some point, but thanks to you, like with Spitfire Lagac, I will not waste a real pick on them. #10Traps
Fishing pole doesn't tap the creature. The equipped creature taps the pole. So while flavorful, it's even worse than you think Turn the pole sideways to cast your line. Lean into it by tapping the creature Untap together to pull back and bring in your fish
I think we’re saying the same thing with different words. The tap is part of the cost to activate the pole so you have to pay a mana and tap the creature that the Fishing Pole is attached to in order to use it. So it’s just as bad as I was thinking (which is terrible) and I think we’re on the same page. I do like the little flavor explanation you included for all the abilities on the card.
@@NicolaiBolas I totally missed tap symbol before the "tap fishing pole" I thought you paid to tap the pole, then had to get the creature tapped in order to get the reward from untapping. Slightly better than I thought, but still not great
While yes exsanguinate feels bad 90% of the time I slotted one in after it being wheeled last card and it won me two games and I went 6 and 3 on arena 🙂↕️
I wouldn't say never. Fishing Pole can give you bodies to sacrifice for your sacrifice outlets and it's basically a mana dump which you need in this slow format when games go long and you have no ways to draw.
I’ve drafted a gleaming barrier once, and it was because I had three copies of ravenous amulet and was building a sac deck. Other than that it’s not good

The bragging rights you get from killing someone with second rite far outweighs the downsides

Crackling Cyclops can be decent in the right deck, I've seen swings of nearly 20 life with it, so I wouldn't say "never".
100% agree.
I'm pretty sure Numot trophied with a 4x cyclops deck. Goes crazy with Bulk Up. Definitely deck dependent tho.

I fell for Adventuring Gear and felt all the points you made for these #10Traps
#10Traps really enjoyed the video and thank you for the info

Crackling cyclops did work for me, granted I built a red blue deck with crazy amount of low cost instants
#10traps. Thank you so very much. Great advice, as always.

Jug should be common now
Exsanguanate was a good finisher for me

The guy who draft all this cards in one sibgle draft 💀

Won me a round comboing with my doubling season
Won 3 games in sealed with extinginate last week. Great card for black/white life gain when the game stalls out.
Fishing pole is amazing if you need creatures to sac
I’ve drafted a gleaming barrier once, and it was because I had three copies of ravenous amulet and was building a sac deck. Other than that it’s not good
Inspiring call is great in constructed. But your right, never draft this card!
I keep hearing folks talk about cards with a win rate % - where can I find this info?
Idk man fishing pole carried me to a few wins
Exsanguinate won me like 4 games topdeck

This format feels like a ton of unplayables, a few decent synergies, and bombs. Way worse than duskmourn imo
